  • I've been loving the "shirred" trend that is popular this summer, especially all the quaint midi dresses with puffy sleeves, so I thought I would try my hand at making the "Atlanta" dress from Daily Sleeper.

    This Is so cute! Thank you for the tutorial. This was part of my childhood. The dresses, Sundresses & beautiful maxi dresses I wore from birth to the '90s were full of these dresses & they really are comfortable & Beautiful on many shapes & sizes. Using many of the gorgeous fabrics they have developed since the 90's- would be beautiful too.
    They made a billowy long sleeve on one dress in particular - where the sheering was the entire forearm & the bodice, It had a baltic type print so it was really a Boho- Before Boho was ever a thing. lol
    . I am glad you've brought a bit of the charm back to this style -
    I have checked on that site where you gleaned the idea from & I don't care who you are - there is no way in heaven those dresses cost $490. US.. ..

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 4 lety +1

      You should totally go for it! Okay, so about your questions...I don’t know what you meant by the first one, about sewing a tube instead of adding the skirt afterwards, do you mean an elastic tube for the waist? The bias tape tube is for the sleeve elastic and it just means sewing bias tape by adding a seam to both sides to create a channel for the elastic...hope that helps :)

      Great question, so my neckline was actually pretty high at first and I ended up trimming about 1.5 inches off, so my suggestion for a higher neck is to cut the curves for your arms (the half arm holes) deeper which will elevate the neck.

      I’m pretty sure you are correct, which makes me love the brand even more! Yes, the amount of time for the shiring is very tedious :)

    my fabric isn't gathering, i did try all of the tensions. It's just like an straight stitch, what can I do with that?

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 3 lety

      If the elastic in your bobbin is wound to tight it won’t work...you can’t really wind the elastic thread for your bobbin on the machine because it will pull it straight...try hand winding the bobbin and not stretching the elastic. That should help!

    Hi there do you have any ideas for how to raise the neckline?

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 3 lety

      So my neckline was originally much more raised...just deepen the under arm curves so it fits higher on the chest :)

    Is it possible to undo the shirring? I have a dress with some, but it looks odd on me and it would look better if it was regular

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 3 lety

      I would think so...you will just be left with a lot of fabric

    Hi I'm new to your chanel and I want to sew like this dress but I also want to cover my neck ! How could i do to extend the shirred fabric to cover it ? And would it be okay if i do a mean would it look good ? Hope that you answer even if I'm toooooo late !

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 3 lety

      Welcome! There a lot of shirred dresses out there that extend higher to the neck...I would suggest drafting a bodice that isn’t a square neck, but that has a rounded neckline, which would mean adding in a bit of shoulders and shirting that.

    How do you know what size curve ruler to get I don’t have one of those in the ones I’m looking at I don’t understand which one you’re supposed to use. That’s not listed under items that you used and how do you know how big to make your underarm curve because the measurements you don’t mention at all. Thanks!

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před rokem

      It’s just a Varicone curve ruler…they are all the same size

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před rokem

      Also for the underarm it just depend how high you want the neckline…I would measure across your chest where you want it to fall and then curve around your underarm from there

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 4 lety

      Great question and honestly I kind of just wing it...lol....it usually depends on how I want my sleeves to sit and if I want my sleeves to be more set in or on the edge....I kind of just eyeballed it :)

    There is a huge difference between shirring using shirring elastic and English smocking.
    English smocking requires fabric, thread and a grid to use to make your pleats.. The decoration is done using thread on top of the smocking pleats. You can get a machine to make the smocking pleats, but they are expensive!
    Please explain that both are valid but very different techniques.
    I have used horse mane and tail pullings for an experimental project. That was fun.

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  Před 3 lety

      Yes, there is a big difference but since this project was about shirring that’s what I wanted to focus on. I love how smocking looks though, so unique 💕 I really want to get a machine but they are hard to find
