I'm trying to create a 'sunday's best' gown that is out of my normal, albeit, immodest style, in order to attend an important religious presentation my love interest is doing this sunday (**they are religious, i am secular). I dont want to sacrifice my expression through fashion, but i would like to be respectful and reach a common ground of comfort for everyone. I appreciate you sharing this knowledge because i plan on using your advice to tackle this project and make use of some curtains that are too short, but i cant return. Thank you for your advice!

I do think that you have to bear in mind that not everyone has access to the kinds of thrift stores that you do. I live in the UK and our 'charity shops' just don't carry fabrics/linens, and the linens that they do carry are very minimal and not remotely appealing.. particularly in the town I live in. I've found fabric suitable for sewing clothing out of once in the 3 years I've been sewing, and I look every time I go in. And I don't mean that I'm being fussy, they're just not vintage, not nice prints or colours, and not nice composition either. If I did want to find the kinds of lovely vintage styles that are frequently found in thrift stores in other parts of the world, I'd have to go to a vintage shop or somewhere like eBay, and believe me, I'd be paying a lot more for them than if I just bought new fabric online! So maybe consider differing accessibility and regions before asking other sewists why they're 'wasting their money'.

Wow, I see what you mean about that curve in the bust. It did look kind of wonky when you showed it earlier, but I bet ironing was the thing that made it perfect. Of course, then double stitching it helped also. There is something different about that curve.

My Mother's wedding dress was dotted Swiss. 1952, very New Look, ankle length. Her mother made it.

I picked my pattern, fabric, lace, embellishments and my aunt made my wedding dress. It was so special.
