James Cameron explains why he could never direct James Wan’s ‘Aquaman’

- 'Entourage' fans may remember back in the summer of 2006 that James Cameron helmed an Aquaman movie that earned $116 million in its opening weekend. Don't remember? It's because it only exists in the 'Entourage' extended universe. James Cameron talks about the James Wan version that has broken box office records in this interview with Yahoo Entertainment.

I love how he said we’re directing underwater scenes in the Avatar sequel and you will definitely notice the difference. He damn sure was right Lmaooo 😂
is it me or James Cameron knows how to politely throw shade into a movie? without making it look like he is actually throwing shade??
Lol agreed look at what he said at the force awakens
Yup
Unfortunately you have to suck up to the industry so you can’t openly criticise dumb superhero kids cgi fests...
He did that to Wonder Woman as well, though it didn't land quite the way he wanted it to.
that wasn't polite. it was blatant.
James Cameron is basically a sociologist and definitely realist when it comes to his art even if it's fantasy or extra terrestrial he always portrays things in a very surreal way and that's what's so beautiful and captivating about his work.
Shut up and take my money for Avatar 2 James.

Because if ever he'll direct it, he wanted it to be more realistic like real underwater scenes like what he did in The Abyss. The Abyss was crazy. Crazy good! I couldn't imagine his take if ever, for Aquaman.
He wanted so real that Ed Harris almost died while filming The Abyss in the third act and said James Cameron kept on going with that scene. Heard Harris later punched him after he got out of the water. Whether it's true or not, I've read about it somewhere.
I think all he wants to say is that, it's just not his style. He's more into physically realistic type of visuals that the audience could relate and feel. like, to really show how it really is underwater. Imagine you were born under the sea and spent your whole life in the water, what he's trying to say is, regarding aquaman, is that actually how it would look like? But since it's a comic film and can rely more into animated effects and take fiction as a reason to believe, it would be acceptable. By the way, i'm a fan of aquaman. It's beautiful.
Well said
Aquaman was good movie but he comapared it with toilet 🔥🔥
You're talkin about the same man who made Avatar. He couldn't have made that movie because he said he couldn't put more political correctness into it. Not everybody wants their movies infected with crap political correctness that we live in all day long..
@@piyushgautam2040 It’s just a dumb superhero kids cgi fest, let’s be honest. No one will remember it even 5 years from now.
@@piyushgautam2040 he kinda did and that’s being nice about it because it was kind of fish water Pooh… but I’ll give the dceu a break, because it sure was an enjoyable ride. @Adriana 0_0 Nothing! I didn't know this was just an episode in the tv series 'Entourage'! I thought JC actually did a movie on Aquaman! But then i realized it was just an episode!
I mean, I enjoyed Aquaman, but I didn't think it was that good. Man Of Steel the first Henry Cavil superman really resonated with me though with how imperfect he was portrayed.
I adore Man of Steel, what a movie! On the whole I rather hate superhero movies, Aquaman included.
But there have been a few that have turned my head: Man of Steel, Amazing Spider-Man [1], Captain America [1], Thor Dark World, and Ang Lee's Hulk.
Hulk is, in fact, one of my absolute favorite films of all time.
Interesting that the most recent of those is Dark World. It's been made clear to me that while Hollywood once was able to make a superhero film or two for me they have now completely abandoned that kind of storytelling.
Oh god! its exactly how I felt watching Aquaman, there's no logic to some of the underwater battle and fight scenes. is Aquaman flying? or does is it mind over water.

Cameron the perfectionist please don’t change
Aquaman 2 vs avatar2 will be greta to watch.
I understand where JC is coming from with this but in my opinion his take on Aquaman is completely irrelevant. It's ideas like his that make many movies that are not set on the normal planet Earth a big miss or rarely hit for me.
Aquaman is a frikken SUPERHERO movie. Its not supposed to depict a realistic view of the ocean or our world so I don't get wtf he's on. If it was edited in such a manner that made the costumes and sets too blatant and toyish I'd understand, but to me the film is a total masterpiece. All that being said he was great with Avatar so I'm really looking forward to the sequel.
He was asked about it, and he’s being honest, he has trained eye as a director to look for mistakes. I think for him it’s inevitable to watch any movie not as a normal guy but as a movie maker, aqua man is not a cartoon, it has real people and locations so the artificial elements(in this case water) needs to look real.
Aquaman is great comicbookmovie
So Avatar 2 is on Pandora, but under water.
True but it’s Avatar you know that means new technology
From what he is saying but in a polite way is the details he would have put in the idea of aquaman are not in line with the scripted aquaman,,,the script simply lacked some details he wished were there
So basically he just wanted to say he spent lots of times underwater. Kewl-kewl.
And that superhero films are dumb kids cgi fests which they are.
James Cameron superhero movies are great. Acting like college kids. That’s fine too. There’s an audience for that. We could have both. Adult and kids superhero movies
As cocky as he is, he isn't wrong
Can’t say he was wrong
It cost $160 million - $200 million to make Aquaman but it's going to cost $450 Million to make Avatar 2 and original avatar cost $237 Million and James Wan made horror movies originally Compared to James Cameron
Aliens the Terminator are also horror film
The abyss is best.. ❤️🔥
I think James Cameron didn't even know what he is talking about and has zero idea of what aquaman is. He is talking about building a fantasy underwater world while Aquaman is about a character with super power, able to talk to fish and more, in a universe that already been built, fixed, and developed in comic for years. The challenge of it is convert from comic to movie, from unrealistically magical to visually acceptable without the cheesiness and more logical while retain those craziness.
Sometimes, this is what a lot of ignorance directors didn't realize, trying too hard to show off their own vision and wild ambition. They have zero interest to fully know what they are working at, what it is about, and that is why most of them failed. Stay true, or at least stay closer to the source(in this case, comic) is what the fans always wanted.
Well, he just said its not a movie that HE would've made. He would've had it be more grounded, he would've portrayed the sea differently, and he would've tried to send a different message.
Ask 30 directors, and you'll probably get 30 different ways each woulda made Aquaman. Cameron is brilliant, and he obviously likes these movies because he keeps watching them. I personally would've loved to see a more serious Aquaman film but was super pleased with what we got, it was pretty spectacular and Cameron ain't disagreeing, so not sure why yer wagging yer finger at the guy. He wasn't putting Wan down or anything, but even if he did....he's got bragging rights because he's made some next level stuff that the vast majority of comic book films have yet to rival in terms of clever storytelling or innovative filmaking.
What..
Because he alredy directed Aquaman with Vincent Chase.
If James Cameron likes other directors then demand rises and popularity rises to others directors that's y James Cameron pulls others character charms down he only proud of Terminator and avatar that solve and other directors are waste in front of him.
James wan is a visionary director's of the future.
I'm also an a director who leading my life.
SO TRUE JAMES
Aquaman 2 is great and nice to watch with !!
He is just politely saying superhero movies are the dumb kids cgi fest that they are.
never even knew he watched it
Obviously the Cameron haters and the DC lovers are going to hate me, but Cameron is right, Aquaman was made to entertain and mainly make a lot of money but not to be a masterful film in special effects as it will probably be Avatar 2, everything in Aquaman has a magical explanation but not rational and that's what Cameron says, Aquaman is like an SFX EyeCandy for uncritical people and it's also a movie that kids will love but only that and nothing else, and best of all is that Aquaman could Having been a realistic film but James Wan is very mediocre and he did not want it that way, but apparently he is a conformist and he keeps the huge box office, Aquaman could have been much better, but like most mediocre movies of these days, they just settle for what the company says and make a lot of money, unfortunately it's the only thing that matters to them ... As Christopher Nolan said, corporations must stop pressuring the directors to make too many bad films and let the directors themselves propose new films.
Why does people have to be critical against movies at all time? I don't know why people like you are triggered when people are entertained.
Look at Man of Steel. That shit was a art of work. To think that those two movies play out in the same universe.
@@kevinclement1533 Because we want something better? Because we enjoy movies where we do not have to shut off our brains and roll our eyes every time the moviemaker forget about simple things like... I don't know, gravity? Me, personally. I don't even watch movies during later showings, because I fall asleep amidst all that noise. They don't even try anymore. I was thinking a couple days ago, after watching "Alita" second time, that the last movie I've seen in the theater twice was Avatar, strangely another one before that was Titanic, I've seen Terminator 1 and 2 at least 5-6 times. True Lies still doesn't manage to bore me. Aliens (the second one) is the best movie in the franchise in my humble opinion. And all those movies made a huge amount of money, so I must be not alone, right? So perhaps, just perhaps the guy knows what he is talking about?
How about to take a couple steps back and consider what he is saying, read a book or two, doesn't need to be some high brow uber intellectual stuff. There is a lot of pulp fiction on the market with better stories, better characters and better world building than the average Marvel movie.
In fact, the only thing latest Hollywood blockbusters remind me, in term of story/characters/world building, is a cheap 0.99€ amazon kindle book, written by first-time self-publishing author. But even there, exist a huge amount of books, written by those newbies, where you don't have to roll your eyes and shut off your brain.

Marvel and DC would cease to exist if the filmmakers pay more attention to physics and realism. James Cameron movies are impactful because he marries convincing storytelling with believable physical world-building. Seriously I'm gonna give up Marvel if I have to watch another half-baked time travel story.
Sure you will....
I got it Aquaman title start A letter like Avatar & Apocalypto . Aquaman lovely & colourful visual under water . Aquaman. So interesting story than Avatar. I thought james Cameron. Film.
Marvel and DC based movies were never created to comport with our perception of the science of the so called “real” world. JC is a great director but unfortunately his comments on “Aquaman” (as well as “The Avengers-Infinity Wars”) are disingenuous and self serving. Cameron didn’t make “Aquaman” or any other comic book based movies and probably wasn’t asked to. In my opinion Cameron should take solace in his own body of work and concern himself with his future entertainment products.
He wants to make it as real as possible
He wants to stop Superhero movies becoming the only thing being released on a large budget. Titanic and Avatar both did something new.
It's his opinion dude. Stop hating on him.
He was asked so he answered.
@@randomly_random_0 I’m note hating on anyone. James Cameron wasn’t ask about the Marvel movies, he volunteered his opinion because the Marvel movies “sucked the life out of the box office” and caused the delay in the financing for the “Avatar” sequels. Even though Cameron originally congratulated the Russo brothers for the success of “Endgame” in passing both “Titanic” and “Avatar” he later said that it was a rounding error that gave endgame the top spot. For the record I’m a huge Cameron fan but I have no illusions about his arrogance, duplicity and cinematic plagiarisms.

He doesn't. He's made The Abyss, Titanic, has done deep sea documentaries and is a somewhat an expert deep sea explorer. The guy is physicis and engineer, having even contributed to technology for deep sea exploration. The only thing he explains here is that because it isn't realistic and more myth-like it doesn't resonate that much with him (which considering his background is very understandable) and therefor he couldn't do it himself as he would be caught up in the mechanics but he's not patronizing it

James Wan created a fantasy world. The movie wasn’t suppose to be realistic or adhere to the laws of physics. The movie was supposed to be fun, entertaining and really over the top.
I’m sure Cameron could create something very realistic but at the end of the day Avatar is just as much make believe as Aqua-man.
James Cameron's point is that his style and preference is for Scientifically possible, like a Christopher Nolan approach but even more exacting, simply because Cameron's been a deep-sea diver and an engineer. He wasn't really bashing Aquaman at all, just saying that his approach is different.
Thank you. Don’t know what he’s on about. They’re both fiction films. You direct and bring your POV across, case closed.
Lem-1 with an E No his point is that he is a " serious film maker" who only makes movies that are grounded in reality and science even though there is nothing realistic or scientifically possible about Avatar or the Terminator. At least James Wan kept it "real" by saying right the start that he was making a wild and fantastical movie. No pseudo science or attempts to show how smart he is. I can respect that approach a lot more then one where a film maker tries to pass fantasy off as reality.
