  • We get a lot of questions about how to get into neurosurgery residency in the UK. This video is not exhaustive but covers a lot of the things you need to start thinking about to get into neurosurgery residency. This video on how to get into neurosurgery residency is primarily aimed at people in the UK, but a lot of it will be broadly applicable to global neurosurgery residency programmes.

It’s been such a bummer being in self isolation. You’re probably super busy but if not, a new video would be appreciated for boosting morale! Even on COVID-19, or on how you studied to get through medical school and residency, or what your day looks like in the pandemic, anything like that.

You seem so kind and like you’re able to put people at ease. I study neuroscience at King’s College and my plan has always been to become a consultant neurologist. I’ve not yet shadowed anyone in the industry, and can imagine I’d definitely be nervous to do so when the time comes, given that neurosurgeons have so much authority and are at such a standard. However, you’ve put my mind at ease and your gentle nature has given me faith that there is nothing to be scared of!

I wanted to be a doctor partly because of Green Wing, and partly because my grandfather was a doctor. A couple of years ago, I came across that video of Keyoumars Ashkan (King's College) resectioning Dagmar Turner's tumour in the frontal lobe, and very few things since have struck me as being quite so audacious and beautiful. Since then, I've flirted with being part of it, and reigniting my passion for medicine, but I don't have a degree (so can't take graduate medicine), and maybe I'll get a degree one day but the training for neurosurgery is just too long and arduous for me to consider it a realistic option. Fantastic that you guys (and girls) do what you do, all the best, and I hope you continue saving lives (and people's musical gifts) in the future.

Neurosurgeons can perform the most fantastic, life saving surgeries, they can see their patient making an amazing recovery and then that patient dies suddenly!!!
These poor surgeons have no idea how bad is the aftercare in the hospital! They expect the aftercare to be on the same level as the surgery, but I have a shocking news to you all - there’s a chance your patient you’ve spent many hours operating on is simply neglected and many errors had been made during the recovery period, your instructions have not been followed properly or have been disregarded totally.
I’m writing this from many months of watching my husband and other patients.
I’ve lost my husband and I’ve lost the purpose in my life, knowing what I know and not being able deal with the horrific flashbacks!
You’ve chosen the most difficult profession there is and I thank you for this. 🤗♥️🥀

I am by no means a Medical School student or a technical genius, though I know a few people in medical school. Four, infact. Three of them are very smart ofcourse, but most can learn to these levels. The one that is unique is truly just a genius, he was born exceptionally smart. He worked hard but not nearly as hard as most. If you try with 100% effort, you can, and will succeed. I would suggest studying hard in high school or college, and spend time researching everything about medicine you can possibly cramp into your day

      C. Burkley I believe with neurosurgery and other surgical specialties you can be more of a generalist, a specialist or a mix. If you wanted to only do spine as a neurosurgeon and you completed a fellowship (subspecialty training), you could do so as long as the place you work accommodates those preferences, you’ve got enough clientele to do it on your own if you’re like a solo practice for example, or you have nice partners who do the other things. Certain groups and employers will want you to cover some of the general stuff as well.
