What if a deodorant worked so well, it could stop a child from being bullied, improve sex lives, treat the symptom of a medically incurable disease, change your life? This is the story of that deodorant.
My name is Shannon Klingman and I'm a baking enthusiast, a gardener, an aspiring beekeeper, a wife, mother of five and an OB GYN. 10 years ago during my residency, I saw a lot of patients that had concerns about vaginal odor and they'd been told by other doctors that they required antibiotics. I felt like we were over-treating women. This is just normal day-to-day odor. If you're leading a full life, you are highly active, you are just prone to having odor because you're human. Men, women, children, it's just normal day-to-day odor.
You don't treat BO with an antibiotic. You treat it with a deodorant, but the problem was there wasn't a deodorant on the market safe enough to use anywhere on the body, so equipped with my KitchenAid and some pH strips, I whipped up my own natural deodorant right there in my kitchen. I knew that this deodorant had to be aluminum-free, artificial fragrance oil-free and baking soda-free. I made my first prototype and it failed miserably, so I made another one, and another one, and another one and eventually I landed on a deodorant prototype that seemed really promising.
My sister agreed to be my deodorant guinea pig and she said that it made her lady parts smell like nothing at all. It worked. So then I thought, if it works for stinky private parts, why not stinky armpits, and why not stinky feet? So I tried it on my husband, and I tried it on my kids little stinky feet and it was amazing. That's how Lume was born.
By this time, my husband and I were about to welcome another child. And when people ask me how many kids I have, I always pause because I have four children that I'm raising here on earth. But I have a daughter, Amy, who was born five years ago who only lived for two days. When we lost Amy, my world got really dark and I was having a hard time even feeling like I wanted to live. My kids were going to now know me before Amy and then they only know me after Amy and I felt sorry for them that I was their mother because I just was not able to rise above it. I either needed to get busy living for my family, or I needed to just let go, and I chose to live. Lume gave me hope. It saved me. When Amy died, I lost myself. Lume helped me find myself again. It helped my children have a mother again. It helped me change the lives of others.
See, this is the life changing stuff that I'm talking about, "My five year old daughter has a rare genetic condition that causes an embarrassing odor around her. Hi Lume! My son is Autistic and has really sensitive skin. He doesn't tolerate clothes or lotions, plus some other things 🤭. He only gets dressed when going to school or out. He also suffers from real bad armpit smell and his skin always chafes. One time he came home with almost raw skin in his armpits because the teacher "forgot" to remove his jacket all day in school during winter. He wouldn't let me wash his underarms for weeks because it hurt him so. We've tried all types of deodorants and he wouldn't tolerate them nor would they work. “Vaginal Odor” is how my patients described it. This concern has historically been labeled as such. I agree with you. Changing the narrative on feminine hygiene begins with reeducating on the source of odor.
The vagina is the part inside the body. If it has an unpleasant odor, that’s a sign of infection. Masking it with deodorant is not sound medical advice.
@@aprilearendil8242 We are happy to clarify that Lume is a product used to control our external odors. The same odor-causing reaction that happens in your pits can occur anywhere skin touches skin. If you notice your odor resolves while using Lume, then the odor itself was external. Lume should never be applied internally.

I can’t thank you enough. My meds caused me to perspire ion my neck. It kept me isolated because I was so embarrassed. It was such a wet medicine terrible smell. This changed my life. It really did. Odor is always on my mind 24/7 with constant worrying. I always had really bad odor in my armpits, always. I'm 23 and I work mainteince at a truck stop. I spend hours outside lifting, squatting and picking up heavy things all day. I sweat and smell badly and none of the deodorants I would use would hold and I would smell bad. have a question: you said as you developed your recipe you made sure it did not have certain ingredients--among which was Baking Soda. Why no baking soda? Thanks
Scott S. Baking soda is a common ingredient found in aluminum free deodorants and it leads to rashes for many. It also would lead to more odor on other parts of our bodies due to the chemical nature of odor reactions. I hope that helps!

Studies have shown on over the counter baking soda has aluminum in it / It is not listed on the label how deceitful I now buy from a proven trustworthy source

Baking soda also causes rashes on people with sensitive skin, and since it was for private, sensitive parts originally, then baking soda is a no go. 🙂
I have a combination of health issues that for years has made me smelly no matter what I have tried. The conditions are incurable, BUT this line has changed my life. Am sharing with another family member with a similar problem

The only deodorant that I have found effective to work everywhere is made of natural mineral salts. Lume under my arms did not hold up very well for me this past Summer in 90 weather, so I didn’t bother using it on other parts of my body. Perhaps your company can look into developing an extra strength version or including mineral salts in a different version.
Years ago I tried a mineral salt deodorant. I got a terrible rash and wasn't able to wear anything under my arms for almost a week. Wouldn't you know I had a job interview one of the days I couldn't wear deodorant? And I couldn't stand to have my arms down because they burned worse when the skin was in contact with its self.

What happened to good old soap and water🧐. Is that used 1st before hoping in this deodorant??
Soap and water is great for debris but it won't prevent odor because bacteria is everywhere and unavoidable. Lume is a whole new concept in deodorant. Is this expensive? I grew up with people thinking I was "dirty" and unwashed...the b.o. stayed in my clothes and as soon as they warmed to body temp...I smelled like a rotten hot dog or a bum...
I use Mitchum now which works for und7er arms pretty good, but it has aluminum and can't be used in private areas.

I'm diabetic ( on a lot of insulin)and I have a strange body smell that is noticeable. I also am on biologic meds for other illness. I stay extremely clean, have never had these issues before. I always smelled good.. Dr. thinks it may be a chemical reaction to the meds. I have heavy drenching night and day sweats now.. head. chest, ..all upper body. I want to try Lume on my chest, tummy, back of neck, etc. Sure hope it works!

A little Lume goes a long way! You just need a pea-sized amount of our Original Cream Deodorant or a few swipes of our Solid Stick Deodorant in each area to control odor for hours! Keep in mind, Lume does not contain aluminum so it won't control perspiration.

Washing private parts should be enough for a HEALTHY human to remove unpleasant odor. And baking soda is great for removing odor from feet and shoes.

Also some baking soda has aluminum (which some places won't tell you) and baking soda in general can give people rashes, making them very uncomfortable while also giving them more odor.

What is it with you guys and deodorant. Was it something I said. Back in my day we used to rub lime juice in our armpits. Lime juice works to hold down your combing hair when you're trying to look good for a date when you're trying to make a good impression.
Problem is, you Will have to wash off. Because that thing does tend to get sticky. What exactly are you trying to sell me other than what is not already on the shelves?

As a woman that battles BV, I am curious why antibiotics are the wrong course of action? Yes, bodies have odor. Each woman (and man) should recognize their own natural odor during different hormonal times in their life. If you suddenly develop a "foul" odor, that is not natural to you, it could be an unnatural bacteria. I understand some women THINK their scent is foul. During my relationships with women, I never found an unnatural "foul" odor.
I DO agree antibiotics are WAAAYY over prescribed. But think about this. If your breath suddenly became foul smelling and you had a nasty taste in your mouth and your dentist did a swab of your mouth and found an unnatural bacteria, would you only treat it with Scope? No, you would get antibiotics. My sister nearly died using homeopathic remedies because the bacteria in her mouth was that dangerous.
If you see a Dr and have a culture done and an unnatural bacteria is found, why isn't the proper course of action antibiotics?
I think this product is wonderful for the women who just don't like their natural scent. I personally prefer a natural healthy scent.

@@teresahaven9222 But...bladder leakage, blood, ect can be what causes VAGINAL odor. It IS about vaginal odor, and some doctors provide unnecessary antibiotics for odors not caused by something life threatening.

I'm just curious why this helps you wear white shirts again, this is a deodorant- not an antiperspirant. The first thing she says about the ingredients is that it has no aluminum, the key ingredient in an antiperspirant.
Yes, some deodorants can help prevent a fraction of underarm sweat right when you first apply it, simply because it's blocking the pores. The same could be said for lots of substances- even lotion for example, because anything you cover the pores with will do that. No I'm not suggesting putting regular lotionin your pits I'm just saying that after awhile the lotion would start to break down just like your deodorant does, leaving the scent behind to cover up the odor of the sweat. You're still going to perspire once that happens, unless of course you're walking around with the roll reapplying it every few minutes.
Hey, maybe I'm wrong- for the sake of your shirts I hope I am. However if I am wrong and it's continually blocking your bodies ability to perspire you may want to have someone take a look at that, someone with a Dr. in front of their names that is.
