Can You Beat Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands with Only the Demi Lich Companion?

  • After an age and a half, I finally got around to running through Tiny Tina's Wonderlands with the Graveborn. I'm personally a sucker for companion classes, so I thought I'd give it a go. I can't... really recommend it. No doubt, it's good for companions, but the s in that word is carrying a lot of weight. Unlike the average demi lich. This thing is a pea shooter with wings.
After a ton of missteps with Borderlands three, I was really happy to see a relatively small number of things to complain about. I often find myself fully believing that these challenges will be fun. Sometimes they really are! Other times, they're this. I just... I'm not sure why I thought it would be a good idea. And yes, I am genuinely considering the mushroom companion with the same setup. Who knows if it can handle these sorts of trials. The world must know! And again, I genuinely enjoy companion classes at least. It takes forever sure, but I get to be lazy about combat, which is a plus.
Anyways, have a great day, night, and everything in between! I'm off to make more mistakes.

By the end of the run, I had mostly accepted that it requires a line of sight, pat on the back, pep talk, cup of coffee, and collection of your broken dreams to get out of bed. Nearly melee range is preferable, which is great for all of the enemies hitting so hard.
The worst part, is that it refusing to attack is annoying, but it made such a small impact on my DPS that I couldn't always even tell. Which is to say that my total damage wasn't zero, but often felt like it. In the literal sense, it's better than nothing, but only marginally so.

The funniest thing about this is Demiliches in tabletop are supposed to be even stronger than normal Liches when it comes to damage output because they gave up everything that could make them remotely human to focus it all on sheer magical might.
And here's Xanax the Mighty over here literally spitting on people.

I've read conflicting notes about them. From what I've read, they could be malnourished and grow weaker, losing a part of themselves, but remaining incredibly dangerous. Alternatively, I've read that some take on the form volentarily transcending even the need for a phylactery.
There's also the missing information regarding what all is required for the potion that kills them to transcend mortality. The most consistent thing about them is always of course that they're terrifyingly powerful beings. Unless they're voiced by Arin Hanson, I guess.

I tend to be pretty restrictive with how I structure my runs. I figured I might have to use spells at some point, so it was nice to have in my back pocket, but it still felt like admitting defeat. I really wanted to get through without having to resort to it, but...
The good majority of the game can be handled with the little chips of damage that it outputs. I can't really recommend it, but it does work.

the point of DPS checks in most games is to make it so players that are doing something wrong know that something is wrong, they arent necessary in most games or even genres or subgenres
but they can sometimes help players differentiate between struggling because of difficulty or because of a fundamental problem with how theyre playing

    • @SpuddyCube
      @SpuddyCube  Před rokem +8

That's probably fair. A pretty good assessment, actually. With that in mind, my initial thought would be that most experienced players of games would be able to suss that sort of issue out in general play. Similarly, tutorials are often reguarded as an inconvenience.
Of course, there's really no way of knowing if it's someone's first game, or if they just need a bit more help to get the intended experience, so it probably is unfair for me to be too upset about it. I think a counter point would be with regards to it potentially making the game less accessible to those that run into it without putting things together. At that point, they could be stuck entirely or driven away.
I still don't think I'm a fan, but that's definitely an insightful perspective. Helps to at least appreciate them as a way of guiding players more subtly.

@@SpuddyCube To expand on both of your comments. DPS checks in wonderlands feel like they fall into the "unnecessary" category more than not. You are unable to grind to over level against a difficult opponent, so your only course of action is to use a weapon of sufficient damage output and type or reevaluate your build. Here's why neither of these is good.
Using stronger weapons is a given, if that needs to be forced on a player then there are bigger fundamental issues. Using the correct damage type for the health bar needs to be tutorialized better if you think that will be an issue later. This is technically the FIFTH borderlands game, so most people will have figured it out by now, and if this is somehow your first, the damage type effectiveness is on every stat card anyway. In other words, if they don't get it already then running into a brick wall of a boss won't make them figure it out.
Secondly, if they are forced to reevaluate their build then you end up forcing people into the same "meta" skills, weapons, and builds. This is a phenomenon that all borderlands games already suffer from heavily with their endgames being basically impossible except for a select few specific builds.
And not being able to over-level also fights against you because in the course of trying to get better gear you may level up and raise the difficulty of an already imposing enemy. For instance, if your ward was already barely hanging on and you had to go farm a new weapon, now you need a new ward, and now the boss is three levels higher than when you last encountered them. And those three skill points you got along the way only go so far, especially if you're already the type of person a DPS check was supposed to "help".

I would argue that it's fairly usable, especially given that you only have two trees to build into. It'd be nice to be able to use more than one capstone, but it's not far off of the build philosophy of the previous games. It's just scaled down a bit.
My bigger issue with it is how synergies do and don't work between classes, and you don't really have a good way to see/test it until after the game is already over. Otherwise, you're limited to things like third party information.

As much as I like your content and respect your opinion, I dont think I can agree with your takes on this games difficulty and so on.
If you can beat a games hardest difficulty with what is clearly a build only someone actively trying to make something bad would be able to come up with then the game is not in my opinion created correctly.
All playstyles should be respected and equally viable, but what you were doing was not a play style. It was a self imposed challenge and shouldn't really count as one.
What you ended up doing to keep moving foreword with the game when you used a gun for the shields, spells to buff you companion, and so on. Those are good things. The game should not let you beat it without gaining a passable knowledge of how to play it. Using a weapon and a skill integral to the game from the very start are things the game expects you to do. Do you have to? No of course not, does it make the game easier and alot less painfull yes, as it was designed to.
Lastly, damage checks. Are they lazy? Yes. Are there better ways to make a boss fight? Yes. Are they as bad as you said? No I dont think so. The fact that you were able to pass it by using a random gun and no further build investment beyond a few action skill uses to heal should indicate that it was barely a problem.
All of this is my opinion and anyone who reads this is welcome to disagree. I love your content and will of course continue to watch it regardless of my own personal gripes about gaming philosophy XD

    • @SpuddyCube
      @SpuddyCube  Před rokem +1

I think there's something to be said about the accessibility of games when looking at exactly that though. It's absolutely a minority of the player base, but for some people, this was quite possibly their first game. I absolutely wouldn't consider it to be difficult or anything, but it's really hard to say what lessons they will/won't learn as they go through.
I personally suck at The Binding of Isaac, but when I played it, I knew it inside and out, so while my technical skill was lacking, I was still able to get through. Conversely, the Dragon Lord fight was pretty much purely a continuous performance of placement, dodging, and pattern recognition. With Dry'l, no amount of player ability can overcome it without the numbers to back it.
I think DPS checks are more often than not just... cheap. I think people will generally agree that Dark Souls is hard, but it can be done with nearly any method you'd like if you've got the patience to make it happen. The big exception there being the Four Kings. Possible doesn't necessarily mean easy.
I personally enjoy playing games. Easy, hard, ridiculous with a splash of really weird challenge. I just enjoy games. I know people that like them in theory, but get stopped up by one or both of those major factors. At the end of the day, they should be an enjoyable experience. I know that not every game will be accessible to every person, but DPS checks in particular feel more impassible. I could see it working as a side boss. An end game boss. But a story one? I dunno.
I really don't think it'll trip up the average player all that much, but my main concern there is for the below average. I don't think it makes the game bad, mind you. I just think it could have been handled better in that regard. Granted, I don't have a perfect handle of the numbers involved there. At least for an initial playthrough, it probably hasn't hurt the experience of many folks, but it's where my mind clearly went on my first go.

@@SpuddyCube oh for sure, dps checks are cheep, and can definitely be a problem.
I just feel like in a game with difficulty settings, the kind of player that would struggle as much as you mentioned should recognize that they need to go to a lower difficulty. If they do that and still feel like the game is unbeatable than that's a diferant beast, and might indicate that the game was not created in a very accessible way.
Dark souls games were a good example, you can beat the game with anything if you put in the work, there are no real dps checks and no time limit. That said, dark souls games dont have difficulty settings.
I guess I just expect the player to be able to grow and learn about the game as they play. Getting better and more knowledgeable as they go. That won't be everyone. Some people don't enjoy games enough to put that kind of effort into it. Not every game is for everyone, and I don't feel like that's a bad thing. Trying to make a game perfect for everyone sacrifices things you know.
Regardless I appreciate you responding and further explaining your thought process. I am excited for your next video, and I hope you have a good time making it. Much support from a fan. ♡

That whole "enemies scale up to you but not down to you" is pretty bullshit
