  • I haven't posted in a while... Sorry about that! Today I want to talk about air wedges, something that has been in my kit for a while that I've never used until recently. Wow these things are incredibly effective and are quickly becoming a go-to item in my kit!

Finally! A practical use for those Air Jordan's with the pump up tongue!
And everyone _laughed_ at me for keeping them for 30 years!

really loving your vids ,very clear and accurate. I watched this last night, and this morning I get a call for a simplex 6000 lockout (Im a licensed locksmith) and after trying to shim it unsuccessfully due to the deadlatch being properly active I remember that i always have 2 air wedges (1 from home depot/lowes and the other from my supplier ), I then proceeded to use both ,one above and one below the lock and wedged it enough that a small crowbar popped it open. so thanx for the reminder

Was that call to a comercial or residential property?
I noticed at my house, and most residences, that the door is recessed in such a way you cant get in air wedge in to spread the gap, but most stores and offices have gaps you could drive a truck through

Pro-tip: If you use the AW to release deadlatches and the doorway is too tight to fit the wedge, you can use another under the door in a corner to angle the door enough that you can get the wedge into the right part.

Air wedges are great and don't cause cosmetic damage like a small crowbar/lever might. Great stuff!

Home Depot has 3 sizes of Calculated Industries "contractor grade" air shims $15.39 - $24.55. Smallest is "slim". Largest does 500 lbs. Expect them to be better than most, 4.5 - 5 star reviews.

I have one and despite being lower priced, it seems to be significantly sturdier than ones marketed for auto entry purposes!

I recommend the air wedge at the top of automobile doors, where you can get leverage, and use it to get a rod through to manipulate the latch and lock buttons.

Dont bend the door too much though, or youll void the weatherstripping.

01:20 Why did the door latch retract into the door as you inflated the bag? You can see the scratch mark on the latch moving to the right as the latch retracts into the door.

@@amihirata Oh lol, that would do it. I'm a manger at a locksmith company and we get lock outs that have high security locks and not everyone's picking skill is up for the challenge and this video is a good demo on how you don't always need to go straight to the lock picks to get in. So thanks for the upload, it really puts another perspective on using this tool.

Yea, exactly. Looks like he couldn't find a set of doors that this would actually work on so he had to fudge it. Its possible this would work, but the door hinges would have to be worn or have other issues.
