That technique will work on some locks and even a few with security pins but there's an awful lot of locks that will just not work on. You need to turn the tension wrench round so it's at the bottom and not almost obstructing the keyway. Great video and interesting too.

Just saw your video on the way to try to help a friend that got locked out of their apartment. I’ve never used my lock picking set. But I got through the door in 5 seconds. This video helped so much. I was freaking out.
I am a locksmith, and most of what you said is correct. My only gripe is the way you used your tension tool, it covers up the keyhole and this is going to make picking hard and cramped. try turning it upside down to how you had it, or use top of the keyway tension. Bouncing the tension tool is also not proper but sometimes on easier locks it does work. Once you hit a schlage with spool pins you might run into trouble with the way you are tensioning. This takes me back to elementary when I picked a lock with a paper clip to get to some skittles. I missed an important test and was sent to some kind of lounge next door to take it privately ''without supervision''. In that lounge were vending machines, coffee makers, a television, comfy chairs, and the famed candy closet. I finished the test early and found a dish full of paper clips and decided to try out some lock-picking like I'd seen in cartoons. I unwound the paper clip and stuck it in the hole and jammed it back and forth a few times and pointing it upwards in the lock every now and again and BAM it opened. Unfortunately I broke the lock and it wouldn't lock anymore, luckily I was never caught, though there was a school-wide lecture.
If you are really good at picking you can commercially challenge locksmiths. You'd be surprised at how many professional locksmiths resort to angle grinders when facing u-locks & kryptonite locks because they don't have the fine skills to pick them... and then they'll charge you more for breaking the lock too.
Got a lock pick practice set a year ago for Christmas and after watching this video tried it out and got the lock open in maybe 30 seconds very helpful video!

Also to know you don't have to buy a set if you don't wanna! I made my set out of windshield wiper inserts! I cut mine using a Dremel and it's really not hard then smoothed it up with sandpaper! There is enough metal in the 2 inserts to make a few tools I made a pick, tension bar and a rake and still have loads of material over to make more!

Strange, I was talking to a police officer the other night about home safety, and it boils down to if a burglar wants to get in your home when your out there's nothing you can really do to stop them. :(
Ye, there was a TV show here in the UK where ex-burglars showed people how easy it was to get into their homes. They cancelled it because it scared people and the amount of money it took to fortify one's home was impractical.
In many, if not most, states it is illegal to own lock picks unless you are law enforcement or a locksmith. My home state is such a state. I would suggest you double check the laws in your state before carrying a pick set in your wallet.

Art of Manliness I guess I'll have to retract my statement. My apologies. I had intended to learn lock picking years ago and, at the time, I found laws against owning a pick set in my State (Indiana). Apparently they have been repealed, as I can't find them now.
In most states, it is legal to purchase such tools. It is legal to have them in your home or place of business. However, it is often illegal to carry them or have them on your person in some circumstances.

Based on my research, there are only four states in the country where the possession of picks is prima facie case of criminal intent. Even then, the possessor can rebut by showing that they did not have criminal intentions. For the most part, as long as you're not trying to break into somebody else's property illegally, then having picks are fine.

Get a pistol, a small .25, .22, .38. These are all made in small frames semi auto or revolver. They have little to no recoil. They do make compact pistols for 9mm and the like too if you want a bigger caliber but generally once someone starts receiving new holes they will run and a hole in the heart or brain from any gun will end the threat immediately. So don't feel under powered if you get a .22. Be sure and ask the people at the store for tips on how to hold and aim, where to practice near by and if they do gun safety and shooting classes.

Successfully made my own pick with a safety pin and some plyers and used a second pin as a tensioner. Took some patience

Strange, I was talking to a police officer the other night about home safety, and it boils down to if a burglar wants to get in your home when your out there's nothing you can really do to stop them. :(
Ye, there was a TV show here in the UK where ex-burglars showed people how easy it was to get into their homes. They cancelled it because it scared people and the amount of money it took to fortify one's home was impractical.

In many, if not most, states it is illegal to own lock picks unless you are law enforcement or a locksmith. My home state is such a state.
I would suggest you double check the laws in your state before carrying a pick set in your wallet.

I had intended to learn lock picking years ago and, at the time, I found laws against owning a pick set in my State (Indiana). Apparently they have been repealed, as I can't find them now.
In most states, it is legal to purchase such tools. It is legal to have them in your home or place of business. However, it is often illegal to carry them or have them on your person in some circumstances.

90% of the law is INTENT, that means police officers that want to charge you with holding a lock pick set have the burden of proving you had intent to use it illegally. NTM how would ANYONE know you have a set on you?
Joseph Jones Please point to specific state statutes that say this. Based on my research, there are only four states in the country where the possession of picks is prima facie case of criminal intent. Even then, the possessor can rebut by showing that they did not have criminal intentions. For the most part, as long as you're not trying to break into somebody else's property illegally, then having picks are fine.

A single women this is actually a relief to know that if necessary I can do this and hopefully be inside my home in a safe time since I work late at night.

Get a pistol, a small .25, .22, .38. These are all made in small frames semi auto or revolver. They have little to no recoil. They do make compact pistols for 9mm and the like too if you want a bigger caliber but generally once someone starts receiving new holes they will run and a hole in the heart or brain from any gun will end the threat immediately. So don't feel under powered if you get a .22. Be sure and ask the people at the store for tips on how to hold and aim, where to practice near by and if they do gun safety and shooting classes.
@@joshcowden6163 Thank you, yes I am looking into firearms. So far everyone recommends a Glock specifically a 9mm EZ Slide. My family thinks its great idea and is planning a picnic after a morning at the local range. Thank you again for your recommendations!
