Leaders like Stalin and Hitler knew how to exploit us. The terror was such as no one even thought of killing Mao. Hitler had an almost unreal luck when he survived his officers attempt. They were however a minority among the officers in the Wehrmacht, because Hitler was clever enough to have them swear to him personally, so an attack on him was an attack on Germany. The terror itself was enough to keep most people from attempting protests and uprisings and when it happened, it was cut down with extraordinary cruelty and sadism.
