1950s Soviet Union Under Stalin [Colorized] (Part 1)

- Stalin's Soviet Union comes to life in full color with the discovery of a long-hidden collection of images.
Major Martin Manhoff spent more than two years in the Soviet Union in the early 1950s, serving as assistant army attaché at the U.S. Embassy, which was located just off Red Square at the beginning of his time in Moscow.
He took full advantage of his post, using his gifted photographic eye to capture hundreds of images of everyday life in Moscow and across the U.S.S.R.
When he left the country in 1954 amid accusations of espionage, Major Manhoff took with him reels of 16 millimeter film and hundreds of color slides and negatives he shot during his travels - including of one of the Soviet Union's pivotal events, Josef Stalin's funeral.
But after his return to the United States, the trove of rare images lay forgotten, stored in cardboard boxes in a former auto body shop in the Pacific Northwest until its discovery by a Seattle-based historian.

I urge anyone to watch a video of pictures of Russia before the revolution. From a country of barefooted, illiterate millet farmers to the first human in space in a single lifetime. I don't think people really understand what the Soviets accomplished in terms of how fast they were able to modernize their previously feudal society.
They had no choice but to do a bolshevik revolution : before WWI Russia was a ressource-exporting colony of the West. All wheat grown was exported to Western Europe, mostly Germany, while peasants were forbidden to consume it and had to feed themselves upon buckwheat, millet and rye they grew on badlands. Only the Bolshevik revolution put a full stop to that abuse. They went barefoot because all leather was for exportation.

The Empire was one of the fastest growing and industrializing states at the time. It had the highest distribution of land ownership of any major power, lowest cost of living, and many more things going for it. Russia was set back at least 10 years due to the revolution, and the Empire was not feudal.
The british had to destroy it as they had always wanted to, and the only reason the Soviets were able to rebuild so quickly was due to unbelievable western support and aid.

The Second World War and the German occupation had a heavy impact on the USSR. Old-timers said that after the war of 1941-1945, something seemed to break in the iron body of the country, and it was never able to recover to the pre-war level. It seems to me that the feeling of such a breakdown can be felt from these photographs.

I have been studying the Soviet Union for years. What intimidates me the most are the soldiers' gray trench coat suits, they look so imposing greetings from Mexico🇷🇺🇲🇽
i think the trench coats were formal for Stalins death. to sort of show grief over his death.
Amazingly clean and white. Looks like heaven.
The music sounds like your call is important to us
And that was only 5 years after the most devastating war in history when all of the western Russia and Ukraine was in ruins

2:10 is such an insane shot
People focusing on the infrastructure following a devastating war, but ignore that Russia still had free housing, education, healthcare, and all its basic needs. This is a country that had its industrial revolution in the 20th century, following a world war, a civil war, a famine, and was robbed of its gold and treasures by the British during the revolution. They still wear the tiaras of the Romanovs. And the Soviets did this without the access to international investment or foreign banks. It did it without colonies, slavery, or wage slaves. This is what independence looks like when you are pressed on all sides. Its not the walk in the park Americans had, with help from Russia.
If most of these pictures were taken in and before 1953, that would mean it had only been 36 years since the abolition of Russian Feudalism, and if the Soviets only put their first economic plan in 1921 (following the end of the civil war), it will have only been 32 years since their first National Economic Plan. Such an under-taught history in the US in general, and sadly, even amongst people who share the same aspiration for the global liberation of humanity. I'm not even an apologist for the Soviet state, yet, on a strictly economic and developmental progress basis, it was an impressive result.
It didn't need colonies because through aggressive expansion Russia gained access to 40% of all strategic resources. This country should have been the richest in the world.....
oooh I am sorry, should have known you are a ruzzian shill. youll never admit that the criminal soviet government killed millions of their own citizens
And also the red army looted eastern europe soo badly they took the hungarian, romanian and polish gold reserves and many other panitngs jewlery ect...
The brutality that they had is insane looted half of europe killed many who just simply didnt agree whit stalin as a easter europian i van only say bád things, if america didnt send guns and equippment the soviets sufferd much more, and also after the war they got loans from ze west
Kino song in the background. Nice choice.
Which music is this?
Kino "Пачка сигарет"

Wow! These colored pictures totally changed my perception of the Stalinist era.
That picture has to more cloudy. You may see clouds on the all pictures, but they are sunny) As usual we have more gray and less color.
The camera quality is amazing. Also I didnt know there was a US embassy there with american flags hanging off of it. Pretty wild
Magical.
What kind of music is playing in the video?

KINO - 'Pack of cigarettes'
It looks normal...
Westerners be like: STALIN wAs A TYrant, 100 mIlLIoN
Since when is it a bad thing to state the facts?
@@TKDJ4 Nice joke, this aren‘t facts. The fact is that Stalin was one of the greatest man of all time who created wealth for his people.
He is responsible for many horrible things. .the good deess don't cross out the bad ones and vise versa.
And he wasn't the greatest man of all time. ..ya'll just nostalgic for a life you never had
@@Janik-pwoejrur you must be joking dude
What is this banger called? Guitar going off
"Cigarette pack", by Victor Coi and his band - Kino, symbol of Soviet Rock, very wise man, sadly died too soon
“Chicks chilling with books” pure poetry
It's accurate tho
For those who don't know the song at the start :
Viktor Tsoi - "Pachka Sygaret" (Пачка Сигарет / Pack of Cigarettes)
yeah looks real dystopic to me
Rather this than New York or Pittsburgh these days
What precisely is dystopic? Apart from red flags and living columns
This song is banging.
