  • In which Crusader Chris critiques (complains about) House of the Dragon for twenty-three minutes. You probably came for ASOIAF content, but don't worry - I'm equally qualified to talk about HOTD and Game of Thrones as well. Which is to say, not qualified at all. Nevertheless, I have super intelligent things to say about Alicent's and Rhaenyra's characters, Viserys and Daemon's relationship, Lyman Beesbury's untimely death, Rhaenys's massacre, and Aegon's crown. And the dragons. Seriously, this show is a lot of fun, takes a ton of inspiration from ASOIAF lore, and I'm looking forward to HOTD season 2.

The dragonpit storming makes Rhaenys come across terrible anyway since she massacred innocent smallfolk and threatened the Greens despite not having yet declared a side...
Yet the writers view it as a "triumphant" moment which is concerning since they're the ones telling the story. It's one thing for an audience to misunderstand the story but it's a major concern when the storytellers misunderstand the story.

Alicent not having control over the small council despite being the queen makes perfect sense. The entire conflict is born from Otto and Company wanting to affirm male premageniture. They don't want a female ruler, they don't want a woman in the ultimate seat of power telling them all what to do. Of course they don't give a shit what Alicent has to say. As soon as Vizzy T dies, their deference automatically goes to Aegon, not to Alicent. It speaks to the sexism that kicked off this entire debacle that they don't show her any respect even though she is technically the default ruler until her son is crowned.

While I do think that Rhaenyra would be more vindictive and petty as in the books, I wish Criston Cole was more like the books the most. Him killing Joffrey Lonmouth in a tourney, and especially him going full send and killing Beesbury and becoming the kingmaker.
In the books Aegon seems to become a bit a of a savage during the dance of the dragons, and it’d be interesting to see him essentially have to step up and get things done, but I am pretty sure he’ll be second fiddle to the duel of the girlbosses.

One of the changes from the book, making the velaryons black actually makes the strong boy situation so much more obvious and makes the dynamic much more interesting. Where the bastards are constantly paraded around as being legitimate, and the whole thing sort of hinges on them being legitimate.

I don't understand why people all of a sudden began claiming that the show is based on "The Princess and the Queen", and Alicent and Rhaenyra have always been the main figures of the Dance. Their feud is essentially what leads to the war, it's what makes the poison spread, but the story of the Dance of the Dragons has always been about Aegon and Rhaenyra, brother vs sister, Targaryen vs Targaryen.
The writers push this whole "The Princess and the Queen" thing so much, it stops making sense somewhere in the middle and goes even further, hurting the writing of both characters. Alicent acts like someone with MPD, flipping back and forth between loving Rhaenyra to the point of putting her interests above her own flesh and blood and hating her guts. Rhaenyra almost throws herself into her loving embrace after just one dinner, despite years of mistreatment and thinly veiled resentment Alicent has towards her children, then cries over that goddamn page too. I wish the writers would just let go until it's too late, but judging from the teaser they aren't planning on doing it anytime soon :/

The reason I mention this if anyone from HBO ever reads this is, you're selling a fantasy show from fantasy books, stop making it into a drama with fantasy elements.. were tired of homogenized stories with no unique aspects! You wonder why people didn't like the show when you take everything away that people are watching it for!

Alicent seemingly being all over the place is honestly just a consequence of the scenes they cut from the first half of the season imo. As someone who's delved into every single interview and piece of background information, she makes perfect sense to me. She's a historical archetype thats far too common in our own history, a vulnerable neurotic girl forced to become an adult way too young, maritally raped and forced to bear children that her husband doesn't even need or care for in the slightest. And through it all, she still clings to doing her duty under this system of power, because if she accepts the truth about how terrible her life is she'll have a mental breakdown. Given that portrayal, Alicents pathetic jump to caressing Rhaenyras arm and calling her a fine queen is obviously an expression of her true desires after so long separated from her.
Edit: Also, the book page wasn't meant to make rhaenyra feel better, it was a warning: Run, like nymeria did. It's the only way she can tell rhaenyra that they 100% plan to kill her, which was her entire issue in the green council

However, having them not talk is also a valid choice by the writers to emphasize the fact that they are more or less puppets to their situation and to the people on their sides and are pushed into fighting a war to the death despite having no actual animus or conflict with each other personally

Nah, the fickle relationship between Alicent & Rhaenyra is meant to highlight something you actually put your finger on, which is that a chain of unfortunately bad coincidences are responsible for the mess they’ve found themselves in (excluding the bad mistakes they and the men around them make, I mean). My point is the show needs a way to win some sympathy for Alicent, a natural thing. It’s hard to be emotionally invested in a straightforwardly ambitious or one dimensional main character in the very first season. Secondly, just as in GOT, they’re both mothers and both ultimately prioritize their children first and understand that vengeance in the name of their children is dangerous.
If we are to truly enjoy watching them plunge the 7 kingdoms into a civil war that will ultimately usher their house out of the dynasty’s Golden Age, then we should at least be given good reason to empathize with the two characters. Which brings me to my final point which is the very last scene of the finale makes clear the gloves will be coming off in season 2. Rhaenyra’s son has been killed by Alicent’s son. It’s why it ends with her looking to the camera speechless with fury. I think the show is too intelligent to fuck up this next season. It knows very well what it’s doing. A complaint I don’t see often enough is the excessive incest. Ok the world is made of it, fair enough, so was GOT. But we don’t need to see sexual scenes of it. I know there’s was only like or two but idk, it’s still gross and necessary. The whole point of it is to create political intrigue, nothing more. The show is already dark and sad as it is. There are other ways to show affection than by physical or verbal. It should be more of a plot feature, though in hindsight this series (&GOT) have less sex scenes than most other shows so I shouldn’t complain. PS- I actually like Rhaenys storming the dragon pit. It’s a set up for a future pay off that will add to the story, if the show follows the book at least. Aegon II flying with his dragon after the coronation would have offered far too much legitimacy for the Greens. This is all building up to a civil war for a dynasty at its zenith of power so like I said, it needs to be predicated on more than just ambition and fear, there must be nuance.

I don't understand how anyone finds Viserys sympathetic in the show. He treats both of his wives terribly. He kills his first wife in pursuit of a son, and then even after his second wife gives him three he dooms them by making Rhaenyra his heir. Which is utterly insane when it's so blindingly obvious that Rhaenyra's children are all bastards. She's the only one of his children that he cares about in the slightest. He's a failure of a king, a failure of a husband, and a failure of a father. All the horrors of war that follow are directly the result of his weakness.
FUTHERMORE, the same is true for Robert Baratheon. If he hadn't been a drunkard and a fool then he could have fathered a trueborn heir and entirely avoided the War of the Five Kings. I don't understand how people can so easily give these characters a pass while hating on men like Otto and Tywin who, despite their moral failings, at the very least are acting with a sense of purpose. I'd rather a king who murders people at a wedding than one who's going to plunge the realm into years of senseless war because he couldn't bring himself to be sober while banging the hottest woman in Westeros. I'd rather a king who forces his daughter into an ideal political marriage than a king who fails to discipline his daughter, allows her to father bastards, disregards the welfare of his other children for her sake, and threatens to remove the tongue of any person who speaks the obvious truth about her behavior. To hell with men like Robert and Viserys. The only good thing either of those kings did was get Targaryens killed.

However, the show is also decidedly pro-Alicent and gives her a significantly outsized role even when compared to her hefty book role.

I’m sick of the “Oops! I did it again” aspect of this show. Everything has to be a misunderstanding. That’s super lame.
The decision to centre the show not only around Alicent and Rhaenyra but around their relationship with each other has led to a lot of undercooked characters on both sides so far. Apart from the main two, Daemon and Aemond everyone else seems very barebones so far.

Oh criminy - the reason Rhaenys doesn’t make the “logical” choice is because:
1: People don’t always make logical choices, especially during high-stakes situations
2: As she literally states later, it wasn’t her ear to start (plus the unspoken reason of not wanting to be a multi-kinslayer).
Personally I like the Dragon Pit scene. I don’t think it was necessary but it worked for me. Most of the nobility /don’t/ care about the commoners. And since the Greens we’re doing this big public spectacle, she countered with her own big public spectacle to mar it in the public’s mind.
I don’t think Rhaenys expects the common folk to forgive her and I don’t think she cares much.

And about the nobility not caring about the smallfolk, the nobility is also not retarded and they know that if the smallfolk refuse to follow them they are lords of nothing, her stunt only made the people of King's landing hate her and whatever side she goes with and Rhaenys should have known this because she is always portrayed as fairly smart.

The show writers no doubt felt that if they portrayed the female characters as they were in the books, viewers would simply hate them; contrast viewers' reactions to male characters like Daemon, who often selfishly pursue their own ends in spite of the harm it causes others yet still attract devoted fans, and we see the still deep-seated sexism behind the show writers' decisions.

While I can agree that it was a little sloppy I feel like you’re missing the point of alicent accepting rhaenyra. For a few reasons. In the show they’re so close, implied lovers, and grew up together for many years. Before the marriage they are as close as two people can be. There is much love between them. People are complicated and can feel many emotions at once, and I do believe under the resentment, alicent and rhaenyra both still carry that love. I don’t think she ever really believed rhaenyra would have to kill her siblings to take the throne. I think it is perfectly believable that at this point she’s willing to, in her mind be the bigger person and forgive. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t jump at the chance when it presents itself for her to go back to her ambitions to put her own blood on the throne. I think the moment of reconciliation is there to show us that they are still family, which makes this war so much worse. But that’s just my opinion and I do get where you’re coming from.
