  • Winterfell has been in the hands of Roose and Ramsay Bolton ever since they betrayed Robb Stark at the Red Wedding. However, the loyal lords of the North may be secretly plotting to restore Winterfell to House Stark - perhaps for Jon Snow, Rickon Stark, or even Sansa Stark.
House Manderly is the biggest player in the North's Game of Thrones. Wyman Manderly is feigning support of the Boltons and Freys, and enlists Davos Seaworth to find Rickon. Will they succeed in The Winds of Winter? Will the Grand Northern Conspiracy come to fruition?

You have sons of your own, you said."
Three, thought Davos, though I fathered seven. "Soon I must return to the feast to toast my friends of Frey," Manderly continued. "They watch me, ser. Day and night their eyes are on me, noses sniffing for some whiff of treachery. You saw them, the arrogant Ser Jared and his nephew Rhaegar, that smirking worm who wears a dragon's name.
Behind them both stands Symond, clinking coins. That one has bought and paid for several of my servants and two of my knights.
One of his wife's handmaids has found her way into the bed of my own fool. If Stannis wonders that my letters say so little, it is because I dare not even trust my maester. Theomore is all head and no heart. You heard him in my hall. Maesters are supposed to put aside old loyalties when they don their chains, but I cannot forget that Theomore was born a Lannister of Lannisport and claims some distant kinship to the Lannisters of Casterly Rock. Foes and false friends are all around me, Lord Davos. They infest my city like roaches, and at night I feel them crawling over me." The fat man's fingers coiled into a fist, and all his chins trembled.
"My son Wendel came to the Twins a guest. He ate Lord Walder's bread and salt, and hung his sword upon the wall to feast with friends. And they murdered him. Murdered, I say, and may the Freys choke upon their fables. I drink with Jared, jape with Symond, promise Rhaegar the hand of my own beloved granddaughter ... but never think that means I have forgotten. The north remembers, Lord Davos. The north remembers, and the mummer's farce is almost done. My son is home."

I like how House Manderly is a Southern hybrid style of what a Northern house would be. They have Southern traditions and culture but ultimately have the heart and pride of a Northerner. Wyman being outwardly different from the other lords of the north as he's rich, fat, believes in the seven, has knights and just generally polar to his peers but that's not entirely true. His house just runs differently but shares the same loyal pride in the Starks and they are just as brutal as the other houses as they butchered the Freys as they remembered the crimes of Bolton and Frey traitors.

Manderlys are most powerful and wealthy northern house. Among the most powerful ones in entire Westeros. Biggest northern heavy cavalry, holding all the trade in the 5th biggest city, and Robb allowed them to rebuild a navy (which they did by the time of ADwD). Ofc, they are much weaker than heavy hitters: Lannisters, Tyrells, Hightowers, etc...but overall a very powerful one. Show made them a minor house, but in truth, no other northern house can match them. Show didn't do them justice.

    • @matt_9112
      @matt_9112 Před 11 měsíci +8

The Lannisters are spent and without proper leadership (at the very latest after Kevan's death), the Hightower's got Euron to face and the Tyrell's are portrayed as "summer knights" and under growing pressure (King's Landing politics, Loras maybe being off the battlefield/dead, Garlan/the whole Reach standing against Euron, again). So the Manderly's odds (especially paired with the Umbers and other hardasses line the Flints and Norreys) are ev3n better I'd say. Just on paper ofc, barring plot twists.

Yes, the Manderlys are far, far, far more powerful than the show portrays them. Remember in Davos' POV, he claimed that with the Lannisters controlling all thr gold of Casterly Rock and has wed the wealth of Highgarden, Stannis' only hope is to secure the silvery riches of White Harbor and House Manderly. Also, many people tend to forget that House Manderly was among the first houses to be chosen worthy enough to intermarry with the Targaryens, with King Jaehaerys planning to marry his daughter Princess Viserra to Lord Theomore Manderly.

Yeah I've never understood that mindset either. Stannis is quite literally the one spearheading the liberation of the north out in the open while the conspiracy itself is occurring in the shadows. The northerners would be no better than the Boltons if they just cast aside the man who promised revenge for the Starks. When Stannis's downfall comes it will be because of Stannis and as time has gone on after multiple reread, theory-craft and analysis from so many different sources it's clear that will occur long after the Boltons are extinct house and the Starks are restored to Winterfell, something Stannis will be instrumental in.

Here is one thing about "A great northern conspiracy for Jon Snow" everyone ignores: He swore a lifelong, unbreakable oath to serve on the Nights Watch. This oath, as we see in the first Bran Chapter, is pretty important to Northeners. You basically get executed without a trial, if you break it.
Just to point out, how serious this oath is: No one ever broke it and returned to his Lordship. Jeor Mormont joined the Night's Watch out of free will, so Jorah could take over his House earlier. But when Jorah got exiled, Jeor can't even temporarily leave to fix the mess his son created, but he has to let a woman reign... in the sexist World of Westeros.
Letting someone return from the Wall is "a Cersei Plan", and we are supposed to think, that she is insane and a really awful schemer. Yet everyone is like "But Rob has the same plan, and the North will support Jon!"
Add the "He let the Wildlings through the Wall, even though all they do is rape an pillage in the North" part to the equation, and it becomes really unlikely, that many Northerners will support him.

@@PassivesAbseits you're right, the Lord of Winterfell never revoked someone's sworn oath to the Night's Watch. The King in the North was fully intending to do so, and his will might very well say this along with legitimising Jon and he would have given the Night's Watch a hundred men in exchange, that obviously failed since he died. Either way it is an unprecedented event, as is Jon's (eventual maybe) resurrection - entirely unrelated to what Robb was doing, it's just a happy little coincidence.

It is a technicality but that would mark the end of "Jon Snow's" watch as he did serve the watch for the rest of his duration as "Jon Snow"

Another interesting thing to note regarding the 'New North' faction.
When discussing Ramsey Snow being legitimised as Bolton by Tommon's Council, Robett Glover says:
"He is a bastard, no matter what the boy king says."
What is concerning here is that Robb has legitimised Jon Snow by making him his heir. But one can't help but notice that Robett Glover and Wyman Manderly have certainly had their fill of bastards and prefer Rickon. Robb Stark was a boy king. Brilliant writing by George. I didn't notice it until my second or third re-read. "He is a bastard, no matter what the boy king says," Is a statement that fits *both* Tommen Lannister legitimising Ramsey Snow AND Robb Stark legitimising Jon Snow. This is easy to miss since Ramsey, Tommen, and Rickon are the focus of conversation. Northern Civil War, when we need unity, is unfortunate, but the Vale Knight's arrival with Sansa may be the glue they need to refocus everyone on unity.

I don't think it's set in stone. Maybe it's true that they just don't like any bastard, or maybe they just don't like Ramsey and southern kings so they're looking for an excuse to dismiss him. (It's a sadly all too common attitude we see all over, just look at some of the 'discussions' in youtube comment threads. People will reach for any excuse, including inventing one, to dismiss someone/something they don't like)
Maybe they'll have a different attitude when it's someone they like, Robb, legitimising the (believed) son of someone else they like, Ned, in order for an independent North to still have a Stark king.

I think you mistake Wyman Manderly's hunger for power.
He has installed himself in with the Bolton camp. And he came with nothing but the clothes on his back and his wits.
It's a gutsy move. But it's not a move of the power mad sort. Because there's too high a likelihood that you die and don't get to live to enjoy your power.
Wyman got his son back, ensuring the stability of his succession. and whatever duties he has to his family and his people in White Harbor. Now that they're taken care of, he's free to play the game for his lord as a loyal bannerman. His life is pledged and he can freely sacrifice himself, if necessary.
Of course, there are advantages in getting so close to the enemy. He may even come out unscathed. But if his fall becomes inevitable, he's positioned to do the maximum amount of damage that he could do with the smallest amount of sacrifice in return (only himself).
There are two kinds of schemers in the world. Those who are in it for themselves, and those who were abused or battered at one point, and were kept afloat by friends until they found their footing as schemeres behind someone else's sword. Lord Manderly has a debt that can never be repaid. He's also old and fat and a joke to those who are not his own people. He's likely the second kind of schemer, loyal to the core to his old friends, and Ned was a very good friend to those who knew him.
    Knights die on the battlefield.
Schemers die in castles, destabilizing the world around them as if a bomb went off.
He'll eat well, and drink well, and even if he dies, he may have the last laugh.

I hate that I’m so late to this, but I have a theory. I believe that all three factions can get what they want with certain politics behind it all that probably won’t happen.
The biggest problem is the difference between the old and a new north as you call it. Wyman power on and he probably will wouldn’t except Jon just due to the fact that already age and could rule his own power. Rickon on the other hand would need a reach for another six years roughly if I’m doing the math right. but the catch is that I think more more than houses would except Robbs will it came out and support Jon ascension to the throne. I’m not particularly in northern politics, but here’s how I think I could go.
The old north would automatically get more support I believe so Jon takes the throne as king or warden. he also serves as Lord of Winterfell consolidating the power of the north behind him until Rickon of age, then Jon would take over the Dreadfort newly named whatever he decides but stays as King or warden. He holds that title until his death, but passes it over back to the main Stark family upon his death. As an agreement, a daughter of his family would marry a son of. Rickon uniting the families. Now, if Sansa does get involved. It’s simple marry her to Jon it’s practically canon without being revealed that they are not brother and sister, but cousins and cousins have married before in the Stark family. a daughter from those who would marry a boy from Rickon united all three of those claims.
Now that’s just the if he stays in the north plan.
If he actually is who we think he is and is a Targaryen, the marriage would be a strong way to keep the north in the seven kingdoms not to forget that he’s stark and was raised by Ned Stark. my answer to that is I believe that Benjen hopefully would survive this war and with the duties of the night watch not actually being necessary relieved of duty to take over as regent and it’s not like anyone would fight it.
There’s some more things, but I forget them right now, but this is the main outline of my theory .
