  • In this video, I take an image in the field with the iphone 14 pro, and compare side by side with the 50mp Canon 5DSR. I also make a large print from the iphone file, to see if the details hold up. Are the images any good? Yes. Are machines going to takeover the world? Also Yes.

    I wanted to call out (thank you to my wife for noticing) that the halo on the peaks is only visible after I brighten the image. The other sharpening artifacts are still there, but I probably could have lessened the haloing by doing more local adjustments in photoshop, rather than applying global adjustments in lightroom. The point still stands that the sharpening is compensating for the software, which wants to utilize a high shutter speed and wide open aperture, for handheld shooting. Because we don't have the option to change that, the sharpening artifacts are still an issue.

    Buddy this video is simply amazing. As a very very amateur photographer it was lovely for you to be so unbiased and honest. Was tempted by the 14 but this made me chose the pro purely for the reason that it’ll always be in my pocket. Thanks bud

    I forgot to ask you what your impressions are about printing on Hanamuhle bamboo paper? Perhaps you could do a future video comparing the pros and cons of various papers? Thanks!

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      I love the bamboo paper. It does have a slightly warmer base than the traditional hahnemuhle rag. I use it for most of my color images. I have tested about 60 papers and have thought about doing a comparison video. The problem is, the differences are so subtle, it would be so difficult to show the nuances in a video. Absolutely open to ideas though! Thanks as always for watching!

    I share your concerns about the AI for drawing, texting, etc. We are at the point that you just can't see anymore where 'normal' work ends and AI begins. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do like taking photos anywhere and of anything anytime. I did just buy a 14 Pro Max, because my old iPhone X was probably going to explode one of these days (battery getting hotter and growing larger and pushing the screen up, so it can happen tomorrow, it can happen in 10 weeks. I couln't wait any longer). But I'm pleasantly amazed by the camera. They came a long way since the iPhone X, but what a progress they've made in a few years. Together with Lightroom Mobile you can create some wonderful things. Love the scenery by the way. I'm from the Netherlands; no mountains here), but still a fun place to take photos with my new iPhone. Thanks for your video 👍

      Excellent points. AI seems to be the buzz word in every facet of life at the moment. I don’t see that changing. I will say though it’s an incredible piece of hardware. I’ve only recently started to appreciate how amazing the video capabilities are as well. Netherlands is one of the many places on my list to visit. Looks gorgeous! Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    Have you experimented with mist filters with the iphone? I’ve heard they help with the softening of the in iphone over sharpening.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      I have not. That’s an interesting idea though. I wonder how much a trade off there would be with overall sharpness.

    Hi
    I have a set of landscape filters for my iPhone 14 pro from Nise they attach too the phone. Like you I am not aware of a ⅓ pty app that will capture PRORAW or RAW images at 48Mp. I would be interested if there is one. I have the Moment app its good but does not capture at 48Mp.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      Richard,
      The filters would definitely be a huge help. I might need to pick up a set. I still have not found an app that lets you capture at 48MP but I have to assume there will be one with a future firmware update. Thanks for watching!

  • @Razertw
    @Razertw Před rokem +1

    The default RAW file without that profile looks pretty amazing for a phone. Would be interesting to see how Capture One renders the file. We might see a different result like with the infamous Fuji sharpening issue in LR.
    I even saw a guy use NDs and take a long exposure with an iPhone using manual app and it looked really good. If Apple gives us more control and makes even further improvements down the road, people will figure out how to get the most out these files and the results could be great for that wide to midrange landscape photography.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      Great point. I will try another software and see if there’s any difference. Filters and focal lengths would be the only other drawbacks I can think of. How did he attach NDs?

      Wow. Thanks for sharing. That’s pretty amazing. I guess im just way behind the times and didn’t realize the advancements in phone cameras. M

  • @brianbeattyphotography

    I'm sure the reason you can't adjust aperture on the phone is because a narrow aperture would show tons of diffraction with how small those pixels must be. Great comparison! I do think that the print looks ok, but the mountain peaks look unacceptably off with that strange texture/color going on. It almost looks pasted in like you mentioned. For the overlapping times, it's a cool option to have a phone camera with that much capability, but the real benefit of the DSLRs are the lens options. No way a phone picture could beat a 100-400 lens zoomed in on the mountain peaks!

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem +1

      I absolutely agree. Lens options are the same reason I won’t move to the medium format options! Love my 400mm. And it was only $500. Basically the cost of a GFX battery haha

    • @richarddeeble5425
      @richarddeeble5425 Před rokem

      HI If you are proficient with Photoshop, Luminar Neo, Topaz labs software the issue with the far away mountains is easily remedied, thus no need to lug heavy camera equipment on holiday etc. You can exercise your artistic side in post.

    You can take control of the shutter speed and aperture with the Halide app. I have been dismissive of phone photos before, but now have an iPhone 14 Pro Max on order to try the new 48mp sensor, after seeing multiple videos showing the high image quality. I will still use my Sony full frame by choice, but it does mean getting a high quality photo is still possible if one sees an image during everyday life, while not carrying your full frame camera. I welcome this new development.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      Interesting. Does the halide app force you to 12mp? All the apps I’ve downloaded that allow me to control settings end up capturing at 12mp. I agree with all your points about the advantages but definitely still worry about where photography is heading and how well my stubborn ass can keep up :) thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed the video.

      @@MrNegative Halide pushed out an update a few days ago. You can now shoot 48MP while controlling ISO and shutter speed (aperture is obviously not something you can change in the iPhone). Excellent video, that print looks fantastic. Do you think a smaller print would look even better (i.e. would it hide the issues you called out)?

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem +1

      That’s huge! I’ll check it out. Thanks for letting me know! It would definitely not be as obvious in a smaller print. Also, I could have edited a little more carefully to hide those issues but wanted to do an apples to apples comparison. Bottom line is it’s a great tool and my eyes have been opened for sure.

      @RivenWard Před rokem

      @@MrNegative Thanks for your insight. Not to put you on the spot 😊 but you mentioned that you would definitely not sell that print to a client. Is there a print size of that shot you *would* sell to a client, or is mobile photography not even close to that yet?

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem +1

      Just downloaded the halide app. It’s amazing so thank you! As for the print, it’s not really about the size. I just wouldn’t sell a print that I can see flaws in. If I could fix the issues I noticed, I’d have no problem selling the 2x3. I just meant that specific print, with the issues it currently showed, wouldn’t be something I’d want to charge for.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před 3 měsíci

      The iPhone image is obviously going to be closer to reality than the flat RAW file. In fact what I often do is snap a photo with my iPhone so that I can reference it when editing my raw files to get them looking true to the scene.

  • @drb9705
    @drb9705 Před rokem +1

    Excellent and interesting… Thanks. Similar to what the camera manufacturers do with their JPEG‘s, the AI engineers at Apple have imposed they’re aesthetic preferences, or more accurately what they hope are the aesthetic preferences of their mass market customers on their image. As you point out, there is no manual/raw mode, so everybody’s images taken with this iPhone will essentially look the same. AI will be successful in getting someone a “pretty picture“, but the truly great images will always be formed from the interaction of the artists mind and what he/she is seeing.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem +1

      Great points. Couldn’t agree more. Still impressed by the tool, but can’t say it’s something I would enjoy to use from an artistic perspective unless apple gives true raw images with control over the final aesthetic

    I have already had a client tell me it's the end of the pro photographer but as I told her photography is more than the camera for sure, there are circumstances where different lenses and AF speed are really important to the shot, I have no doubt that very soon it'll be the end for the high end camera and lenses especially if apple was to release a grip with all the controls and maybe small lens attachments, i can't imagine what the iPhone 15 or 16 will mean to photography.

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem +2

      I don’t like your client… just kidding. All jokes aside, I do agree with your points. I think even more interesting is where drone photography will go. Not to go down a whole other rabbit hole… but the ability to take pro quality shots without moving your legs… I know lots of photographers that would love that. I imagine a day where I hike ten miles for a shot and a drone 6 feet above my head gets a better shot from the comfort of their vehicle haha!

    One thing though cellphones normals do not have physical apertures, the one that offer that function just imitate the look of a narrower aperture.
    As for iso and shutterspeed, i just do not understand why apple doesnt let the customer use like a pro mode. Very unfortunate

    • @MrNegative
      @MrNegative  Před rokem

      I did not know that about the aperture. That’s interesting. I’m hopefully the aperture and shutter speed will come in future updates. I will say I’ve been blown away by the video quality.

      @@MrNegative yeah well, let me correct the statemant a bit. Cellphone cameras do have an aperture, all cameras do but they are fixed, so you cant close them. Thats what i mean.
      Its very difficult to put physical apertures into the phones because you would need very very small parts to close them and a very precise motor. One sony phone and the galaxy s9 both had variable apertures but after those two no phone used that technology. They coule operate at lets say f1.8 and f3.5( i dont know the exact values unfotunately)
