  • Hurricane Isabel had arguably the most unique satellite presentation of any tropical cyclone. In this loop (from 1245-1745Z on 12 September 2003) she was a Cat. 5 hurricane with 140kt winds. At the beginning of the video one can observe a pentagram pattern in the eye created by eyewall mesovortices. This pattern was unofficially referred to as a 'pinwheel eye'. Goes to show Mother Nature is still the most creative artist.
*Isabel was a powerful Cape Verde hurricane and the most intense storm of the 2003 Atlantic hurricane season. In her week-long trek across the Atlantic Isabel attained Cat. 5 winds on 3 separate occasions. She made landfall on the US east coast, causing 51 deaths and 3.6 billion USD in damage.
The GOES Project is a collaboration between NASA and NOAA.
