    I went to Krabi earlier this year but I think these islands are far better than the island I stayed at there. I travelled to the old airport from the railway station a few years back. Slow train ride to airport but a lot of fun. Your videos are very informative. Just subscribed.

    PRRRRFECT video straight to the point loaded with vital information for people how want to plan their trip. I understand that the same catamaran company has a bus from Bangkok to the pier in the Chumphon area and the final price from Bangkok to Koh Tao is not so different. As much as I love trains, it seems like taking the steel horse option over the bus is riskier timewise.

    Another great video. An A to Z illustration of a Thailand side trip. Transportation, food, hotels, graphic maps, great title explanations and the various cost of everything. It's the whole enchilada. I really like your style. Very well done as usual. I feel as if I am there. You really help me out for the time I can get back to Pattaya and take more side trips to different places than I already have the last 2 summers. Great info. Never thought about taking the train down south. Always flew. Thanks. John Phoenix, AZ (by way of New York)

      Yes I believe things will get back on track sooner rather than later, because Thailand is special universe, not subject to the rules of this world. It's energy and spirit is unquenchable! I literally feel like I have died some time ago and then woke up in this paradise as a reward for my sufferings in the past life!😄

    BKK to Surat Thani 1hr only, then boat pangan samui koh Tao

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Před 3 lety

      Yep, that works great too:) So on your route, Surat Thani> Samui> Phangan> Koh Tao, to return to Bkk, one has to either backtrack to Surat Thani, or boat from Koh Tao to Chumpon (or, fly back to Bkk from Samui). For me, if time is not a concern, I just love the train, then do a circuit with no backtracking, Chumpon> Koh Tao> Phangan> Samui & then either fly back from Samui or SuratThani. Either way, an absolute pleasure :)

    Very nice video, I also really like the old train station in Bangkok, and the trains, done lots of trips down that way, as I used to live and work on Koh Tao, and my preferred way of travel was by train. Tip is to either take the fan carriage or the 1st class. Those waves are btw nothing - and the catamarans would probably not have been more comfortable, they are also very unstable.
    It hurts me very much to see my home Island this way...

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Torben. Love the trains (and boats too). 2cnd class a/c train fine for me. Sure, even the big cats can get bumpy but generally are more stable vs mono. From YachtingWorld site: 'One of the major advantages of a catamaran versus a monohull is their inherent stability. Because the boat is not as susceptible to the effects of wave action and does not heal the way a monohull does'. -Milage & rodeo ride may vary depending on wave heights, wind, etc of course;)

      Hi, It's still the tail end of rainy/stormy season in the South and usually the BIG twin catamaran boats are in operation on this route. The big cats are far more stable and more comfortable too. However, due to the current global situation with mainly domestic/local travellers, #s are way down so it's not practical to run the big boats (yet). But better days are coming and the big cats motors will purr again. Hope more can return and sooner than later!

      @Niet van belang Hi Marcel. I wanted a phone with a built-in gimbal, also 5G ready and the Vivo X50 Pro ticked those boxes. Plus has a F1.6 aperture for better low light and costs almost 50% less than an iPhone 12 or Samsung S20 Ultra. Still dialling it in and screwing up filming tho!

    Most people always seem to recommend Thon Buri train station to start there journeys or is that for certain destinations like Kanchanaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan?

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Před 3 lety +1

      @Roy Goad Hi Roy. I think this may be because from March until recently you could only hop a train to shorter distance destinations via Thonburi stn. However, Hua Lamphong is again offering all destinations & classes now. BTW, no idea 'official' opening date of the new Bang Sue Grand Station (late 21 or in 2022?) but pleased ol' Hua Lamphong will remain as an inner city stn and railway museum.

    Hi, can you get long term rentals on Koh Tao? i'm coming to Thailand to live in June and it looks a great place.

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, can. However, recommend to approach it in steps of discovery and familiarisation: 1) Visit many areas which you think may appeal 2) If liking an area, before committing to a 12 month or long lease, first stay for a few weeks via pay per week in an air bnb or hotel/ bungalow etc. This is to see if both the area and lifestyle really suits your needs and/or expectations. Every place may 'seem' ideal at first glance but in reality may not appeal overall. Having said that, fortunately for me just about anywhere in Thailand appeals lol. Good luck/chok dee in your search and relocation.

      Hi, mostly because I'm just a guy on a getaway from Bangkok and not an investigative reporter. I merely wanted to show my experience and I hope that's ok? For the record, my heart goes out to Hannah & David's parents and all parents and families affected, including the Burmese lads Zaw Lin & Win Zaw's families. Such a tragedy all round. However, as it needs to be said apparently, ALL the people I encountered on Koh Tao were lovely, warm, friendly and caring. Nor did I ever for a second feel threatened or in any danger whatsoever. There may remain a very small element of bad people on KT but the entire island should not be tarred with the same brush. Moreover I feel safer in the darkest alley anywhere in Thailand vs the avg main st back home. So now we've both had our say and let's leave it there please. Thank you :)

    do you know if the train offers private rooms?

    • @SideTripLife
      @SideTripLife  Před 3 lety +4

      Yes, in 'normal' times the main Southern trains add a 1st class carriage (or 2) with private rooms. To get a 1st class cabin to yourself you'd have to book both upper/lower berths (expensive, fly to Surat Thani or Samui instead?). I think at this time only train #37 has 1st class & leaves Hua Lamphong at 15:10 and arrvs Chumpon 1:30 a.m. (+add 2 hrs due to dual track construction ongoing, ie: 3:30 am). BUT the bus to the boat leaves at 6 a.m. from Chumpon train stn so would likely be min 2.5 hr wait. OR, take same train to Surat Thani (arrv 3:45 a.m. 'officially') and 1st ferry to Samui leaves at 5 a.m. and hourly after. Anyways best search for 'thairailwayticket' site, select Southern Line and have a look. Good luck.
