Red, you're so lucky to have seen Samui in the 80's, must've been amazing! (doubly lucky to live in Sarasota Florida:) Fortunately there's still many quiet chill places around Samui but no longer the days of Charlies huts 250 baht right on Chaweng beach... (will be looking at the beaches next vid btw). Meanwhile, just across the way is this place which may remind some of Samui 20 years ago: czcams.com/video/DBGT4xhLJmQ/video.html

re: driving to find you and give you your charger. Happened at BKK Bagels righ there by Phmoen Chit AND in Rayong when I started walking away from the Coffee shop AND they even called the lady at the bus station I was walking towards to had the lady from the bus station AND the ladies from the coffee shop BOTH driving towards me to tell me they had my charger. Then (of course) the lady from the bus station had me hop on the back of the motorbike and took me to the bus. AND once when leaving Koh Phangan on the 6am boat, I was running late (and quite literally RUNNING to catch the boat before it pulled away). I get to the boat and have my printed "ticket" or so I thought. Nope - was the voucher/receipt for the ticket. I turn and starting Running back to that ticket window (that you stood in line for) one of the guards hops on his motor bike, pulls up along side, takes me to the ticket window. waits. takes me back to the boat. I begged him to take a tip (i think it was only like 100 baht) but they all held their hands up and smiled - wouldn't take it. As i am walking onto the boat that massive door on the front starts raising and the captain give a few short blasts of the horn and we are pulling away. Ok.. that was a pretty long answer to "Yeh, that's happened to me a.k.a. I LOVE THAILAND!" 🙂

Here in Vietnam the borders are supposed to open on 15 March, but we have had a lot of Covid after Tet . 170 thousand a day so I’m not sure what the government have planed . The thing is they keep their cards very close to their chests and not a lot of information comes out . Take care .

Most 'reg' bars close around 11-12 but some just keep on going. Suffice to say you can still stagger home in the wee hours if that's your thing. Tip: on Facebook if a place like say Black Bamboo Club in Chaweng says 'Open Till Late' this may be such a place...

How can a restaurant or business on the islands have problems finding staff?
Must be plenty of locals in these times looking for a job. Aware of the Burmese normal influx, but still sounds strange.

Hi Viktor. Many staff went home during 'rona and have not returned. Also some found work back home and/or started or joined a family biz back home (have heard this from several biz owners who are seeking staff). Another big problem has been certainty, or lack thereof the past 2 years. Also in Thailand and on the Islands especially, Burmese make up a large portion of workers and Myanmar was no-go for 2 years. 1 million Burmese workers were 'registered' in Thailand prior to 'Rona so factor minimum 2X+ that # (in a population of 68 million with 38 million in the labour force, not counting Laos, Cambo etc migrant workers). Now, Burmese and upcountry Thais are both starting to return but apparently construction companies in Bangkok are paying 3000 Baht/$100 bonuses or more to brokers and/or new staff to sign on and many are doing that instead (+higher wages, transport fees and also free housing or subsidy, etc). So, the labour shortage particularly in the hospitality industry and especially on the Islands continues.
