It's great to be able to tear up someone else's stuff instead of yours.
I don't have the bells and whistles in my 3/4 ton Suburban, but I do have the locking rears and transfer case.
I have a friend that needed to move a M35 deuce and a half that didn't run, up a twisty unpaved road 3 miles to his friends house. He assumed that I was going to drive my M923 for the pull. When I showed up in my Suburban, he said that won't work.
Well, 4wheel low and not a problem. Oh, and the M35 weighs 13,500 pounds.
After seeing these Ram reviews, the Ram truck has a new fan in me.

FCA has stepped up their interior game significantly. They do way more than most companies in sound deadening. They have a couple of the rubber pads to reduce vibration noise in the cab like everyone else, but they also have this synthetic mesh material they line the underside with to reduce road noise.

Jeez people, yes, it's an intermediate level course... It's also a journalist test drive. Not all of them can, or want to handle a mug bog, or friggin swamp off road scenario.
I actually appreciated his simple breakdown of what each off road feature does and why it's optimum *here* approach.
Sadly many buy these trucks and don't even have the slightest idea what an e-locker does, or under what circumstances to use it. Same with sway bar disconnects, hill descent... Etc...
My uncle bought an FJ back in 2014 new. To date, never been on anything worse than unpaved roads. But he loves it. Makes him feel capable in his senior years. He wants something even more off roady so he's looking at a Raptor. Lol
I love my uncle, but sometimes I envy being able to forgo basic logic because he can easily afford any case of "I wants" he wishes. Not hating, he worked his ass off to get to this point in life.
So if an FJ, or a Raptor makes him feel good, when he should really be in something like a Denali or Longhorn/Limited, more power (wagon) to him. ;)
Probably not unlike the journalists in attendance, following behind who may have needed help around the cattle guard, or whatever that no grade blockage was.

What an excellent video. Your "tour guide" did a great job of explaining all the features too. I am not a fan of any of the new trucks. The more fancy stuff you have, the more unreliable the truck becomes. That said......If I were in the market for a non-diesel new truck, I'm pretty sure the PW would top the list. Mostly because of the comment made in the video. I could buy a truck and build it up with all that stuff. But the PW comes with it, and it's under warranty. Great video.

I have one and love it. The draw back is towing. The reason the low payload rating and max trailer is due to the light rear springs which are 1,500 lb, a regular 2500 has 3,000 lb
I’m doing something with mine that you will object to but ... I’ve installed 5,000 lb firestone airbags and plan on purchasing a 5th wheel with a 12,000 lb dry weight. I have no doubt the truck will handle it with the new airbags.

I wish the gas tank was 36 or 38 gallon (and that goes for ALL 2500/3500 Rams) rather than the measly 31 gallon tank. Ford offers a 36 gallon (and more impressively, a 48 gallon for CCLB), and even Toyota offers 38 gallon on Tundra. As soon as you go off road or tow anything, mpg plummets and fuel range becomes a real issue with such a small tank. Only other change I would love is a slightly higher factory rated payload (2000 - 2500 lbs). Otherwise, I feel that a truck with 31 gallon tank is only acceptable if the true mpg were closer to 18-20 mpg rather than 12-15 mpg

Also this truck is very large. I do not think it can compete in trails with a jeep or tacoma, even a raptor is probably more capable. However for me the towing the features the look the price and the room inside made it a perfect hunting rig and towing rig to tow my rzr.

Dam I could have made that tight corner in two wheel with the rear differential locked up, without any three point turns! Just flip the wheel and let the rear kick out just enough then hit it again! Yes the winch helps, but there would be less need with bigger tires! I am also pretty sure my fairly stock Colorado Z71, 4x4, V6 Ext Cab, that all I’ve done is a 2” leveling kit, removed the front airdam, front sway bar disconnect and 32” Goodyear DuraMax Tires. That has taken me through some amazing places!

@Ron Wakefield : I have drove one at the Moab Jeep Safari. The Raptor is a good truck, but the power Wagon is just plain better for true off road and ten times more practical for my 4x4 needs. All that guidance through that trail, I'm sure was because that PW was a new unsold vehicle.

  • @davidrock3936
    @davidrock3936 Před 4 lety

So I just bought a 2019 Power Wagon and have yet to go off-roading with it. More than likely I won't. I use to have an FJ Cruiser and did alot of off-roading in it and I can say first hand the Power Wagon is a bit too large to do it effectively. Don't get me wrong, it is capable and you can get places with it, but I'm sure it would get stuck trying to follow a Jeep, FJ, or even a tacoma through some of the trails I have been on.
Also, for those naysaers, the dirty secret is that wheeling has more to do with seat time, skill, and good judgement rather than the vehicle you are driving. IO have seen people take stock rigs without 4-wheel drive places where others in a capable rig cant even get out of the parking lot.

I see that it looks like for 2019 the heavy duty RAMs are getting interior updates like the 1500s got with big touch screen options, etc. The only thing I wish the PW had was more payload; surely there is a way/some setup that is soft enough for offroad but can change modes for more payload/towing.
