  • The friendly folks at San Luis Central allowed some on-the-scene taping of another typical day on their unique little railroad. GE 70-tonner #71 was subbing this particular day. #71 was built new for SLC in January 1955 to replace its only steam locomotive. #71 has spent its entire life working between Monte Vista and Center, Colorado for the SLC. Today, she is back-up power for the other locomotive on SLC's roster: SW8 #70. SLC interchanges all its traffic to SLRG at Sugar Jct. (Monte Vista). Francie Nye, whom this video is dedicated to, worked as SLC's Manager Administration for many years at Monte Vista.

Wonderful editing, it almost seems as if I know what I'm doing as engineer. Thank you Paul! Come back and visit soon. Railfans are always welcome at the SLC.

Nice! Never saw/heard a GE 70 Ton locomotive run before. Understood to be very reliable engines, though. Source I seen it was in a recent TRAINS magazine article about "power for the little guys" (short lines).

71 is a sweet little engine, but sounds like some injectors are sticking. It shouldn't be smoking that much.
I rode in the engine several years ago, and it ran very nice then. Glad to see it is still being used!! Thanks
for sharing the video. Nice Job!!!

71 is indeed sweet. She was pinch hitting for their other engine that day and admittedly was not feeling too well. There was also a water leak. They were planning to get her in the shop after the regular engine went back in service.

One of my favorite Colorado short lines.

I was there on that very day after they had tied up! I stopped to take pictures of the FEC steam engine loaded up on a flat and ended up chatting with their GM for a while in the parking lot. I hated to miss this, but am so glad you shot the video. Beautifully shot and edited!
I wonder if this is the same Paul S. I railfanned the Friends of the C&T photo charter with the next day?

When I last saw the SLC in June of 2017, the line was clogged by cars in storage.

What goods does the San Luis Central haul?

Food products and fertilizer. The latest Colorado Railroad Annual published by Colorado Railroad Museum has a lengthy article discussing the history and business side of the SLC.

So what's with the old steam locomotive at 0:41?

It was getting ready to be shipped back to Florida to its previous owners from what I understand.

It’s the Florida East Coast 148, purchased by U.S. Sugar. I understand they intend to restore it and use it in excursion service on their railroad in Florida.
