First: the difference in humidity has a serious effect on how we 'feel' that temperature. Last year I worked with several guys from Bend who would walk into the restaurant here in Corvallis during the winter months freaking out about how absolutely freezing it was outside. I distinctly remember each of them uttering the phrase "it's just not like this in Bend.." at least once. One day we checked. It was 25 degrees colder in Bend and my friend kept going "no it's not! no it's not!" lol. If anything I would warn people moving from Bend to the valley that the cold here in the valley is AWFUL compared to Central Oregon.
Second: I'm looking to move over to the Bend area soon and this video was helpful, but what is life like in Bend if you're 26 with no money and get a regular job? As in, dude I can't even see the horizon of buying an entire house, and that million dollar neighborhood looks wonderful but is entirely unrealistic. What is NORMAL life like in Bend because nobody seems to want to talk about THAT, it's always, breweries, breweries, breweries (I don't drink). The outdoor stuff is perfect I grew up vacationing in Sunriver pretty often, but a video series for the different areas you serve that goes through 'a day in the life in whatever city' would be pretty helpful, since the majority of people's time is NOT walking the beautiful public pathways and drinking alcohol. Where do you work, where do you get food/supplies, what is the actual job market like? That would be far more helpful.
Third: Prineville is a beautiful area, one of my favorite places in the state growing up here. The descent into that narrow valley edged by plateaus of rock as the sun is setting... oh man it's awesome. Definitely an even quieter vibe than Bend but if you're REALLY outdoorsy the Ochoco National Forest is unbelievable and is within a reasonable drive from both Bend and Prineville.
Fourth: If you're moving to Oregon, don't confuse Bend with North Bend, or you're going to be EXTREMELY dissatisfied... Bend is a gorgeous high desert city surrounded by mountains and the great outdoors. North Bend is... Well, as mother always says, don't say anything if you don't have anything nice to say... __________________________
Fifth: 20 inches of snow might be the number cited and I'm fine with believing it but from vacationing in Sunriver (500 ish feet higher in elevation and more in the path of weather patterns than Bend is, to be fair..) it seems like the number should be way higher than that..? Just curious. Also the comment about the internet service, yeah if that matters I would try to move into the city more (advice from a friend, for me it matters a TON, game developer as a hobby..), and whenever I was over there to vacation cell service felt like 5-10 years behind from the valley, though it might be better now. If you're into tech I would definitely look into that before you move.
Sixth: (last, sorry) It really is beautiful. Brett showed some of the local parks and shots of the area but from my own experience, you walk out of a regular grocery store to a view that belongs on your desktop. This is true of pretty much the entire state, not just Bend.
Random stuff: world class hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, fishing, camping, trail-running with several qualifiers for ultra marathons taking place at most a couple hours from Bend, snowboarding and skiing, that ampitheater he showed at the beginning brings in some pretty good concerts too (not like Portland or Eugene but still). In my experience things to watch out for: the altitude until you get used to it, but it's not that noticeable for everyday activities, mainly exercise, the altitude also means it's easier to sunburn so if you're paper pale at least be aware, it's also quite dry and can be dusty in central oregon (not as dusty in the city obviously) so if you're prone to dry eyes, mouth, or nosebleeds it's something to be aware of. It does snow, and either way it can get icy. The area is quite prepared for it compared to when it occurs here in the valley and commuting into the city has become safer with major reconstruction of certain stretches of highways that were really dangerous (I'm referring to the stretch between sunriver and bend but there may be others that were altered for this reason), so make whatever appropriate changes to your plans or at least be aware that yeah, the roads get pretty bad in the winter but as far as I've heard from my friends I spoke with, it's really not too bad. Vacationing from Corvallis I always thought the tap water in central oregon had a weird flavor (minerality, or different treatment process). Overall there's a huge vacation/tourist influence which makes the vibe of the city really awesome but also clogs the **** out of all the cool places to go EVERY. WEEKEND. So try to get tuesday/wednesday off or something (I mean clogged, like the parking lot at the trailhead is full and people park off the edge of the remote highways a couple hundred feet in each direction, it's actually a serious complaint most Oregonians have about the area: we can't enjoy central oregon because everything is swarmed by vacationing families and people from all over the world). Everyone is having fun and living their best life - that's what Brett was saying about 'the people', everyone's super chill, most of Oregon is like that. Oregon State University has their Cascades campus connected to the Central Oregon CC campus so there are education opportunities there as well although the degree options are vastly different from the ones on the main OSU campus here in Corvallis. If you just want to visit the area I would check out Paulina Peak outside of LaPine, the views of the Cascade Range are absolutely spectacular up there (you could even stop by the Obsidian Flow which is a cool spot too). I could go on but I already wrote too much so yeah!

you seem to know alot about oregon, i mean you obviously live there but also you seem to have plenty of first hand experience with most of the desirable areas there. im hoping maybe you could be of some help in where to look. a brief history, i did live in salem for about 9months & dallas for 2 months then unfortunately my finances & poor choice of roommates both required me to leave the state(i moved with my gf at 17 had it all figured out ect. went broke, moved back home) anyway i am now 25 with a family and am in a better financial situation (not well off or anything, but i can actually survive on my own now) anyway, i mostly seen salem in my time in Oregon. & there was nothing particularly wrong with it, just nothing drawing me to it.. i did pass through grants pass and thought it was absolutely beautiful, but from what i have read online it's a pretty terrible place to actually live. so i have crossed grants pass off my list. oh, i must mention i did visit Portland when living in salem & my favorite part about salem was that i could visit Portland easily without having to live there, Portland is just too much everything for me, too big, too expensive, too much of a city, i couldn't live there. so i had basically settled on moving to eugene, but i have never actually been to eugene just seen videos and read about it & it really does seem like a great place for me, but now im starting to wonder if maybe i should look into bend or Corvallis.. and now my current situation is.. moving in a few months and i'm stuck choosing between eugene, bend, & Corvallis. having no experience with any of them.. what would you recommend? are those kinda like the top 3 places in Oregon to live? they are the ones you here the most about. honestly i dont know how i ended up in salem nor do i remember.. i guess i just had no experience with oregon, and it was close enough to Portland and seemed decent.. which it was a decent place, i did like it. though it was somewhat plain, a little boring, wet, just kinda meh.. and not the most scenic. i read that eugene is the second largest city and a step down from Portlands overwhelming size, and that salem is the 3rd largest city.. i found salem a bit small frankly, and Portland was like i said just a bit too much so i guess that's how i settled on eugene but i just want to make sure im making the right choice. i also like that it's supposedly where "the last real hippies" are im a bit of hippy at heart and that kinda draws me in. but in life you hear so many things about a place and when you show up it's not always the picture that was painted. i am a cannabis enthusiast and am looking for somewhere where that scene is booming (other than portland) honestly i had to decide between moving to colorado, California & oregon.. then my budget chose oregon for me lol. (i have lived in all 3 in the past) just always renting/room shares but id actually like to purchase a home now and in Colorado that's a bit unfeasible at the moment. so in my top 3 choices of eugene, bend, Corvallis am i looking at the right places? i need someplace safe for my family(it's oregon tho so i assume it's all safe) i need somewhat affordable living, i need a beautiful nature rich area(again its oregon so.. all of it) but i just can't settle on where.. i am terrible at making decisions & id love to know more about these places from someone more experienced such as yourself. can you offer any advice on these places? or provide me more details about them to perhaps make my decision more easier.

The con might be the opposite for me, i grew up in a town of 350 people, the town i work in is about 35,000 so bend is much bigger than what im used to. If bend is as quiet as Manitowoc, id say there isnt much of a con on my end :)

No doubt! Bend has average winter temps of 25 as lows to 45 as highs and 20 inches on snowfall. It really is a lifestyle choice - with so many snow activities and plenty of sun, winters aren’t bad at all. Especially compared to other outdoor towns in America (Park city, Bozeman, Missoula, etc)!
