I got ahead with my dog's training after reading " Forward Fast Dog Training by Kelly Ferris". Found out how to stop my dog from jumping on people. Learned that you quick turn your back on the dog when they jump and leave the room through the door. When dog finally stops jumping you give him a treat.
Thanks for this Chris, I'm having the same issue with a dog I'm walking for my elderly neighbour. He's built like a tank and he's jumping up on people (inc us) I will try this. Thanks! :) Btw, is that book you're reading? I tried to access the website Forward Fast Dog Training by Kelly Ferris but it gave me an error message.

Since I got my first dog in the '70s, I have never, ever used treats. When they do a trick right, I enthusiastically say "YES! GOOD! and give them a hug. They love knowing they pleased their master better than a treat. It worked good enough that a Golden Retriever I once had, loved learning so much that I ran out of tricks and she still wanted to learn and so I taught her all the same tricks with sign language. I taught our Yellow Lab to look for shady looking people. I had a guy fixing an appliance at the house once and he brought his son to teach him his trade. We weren't paying attention to (the son) but the dog was and he growled. We all looked and he was casing our house (he was arrested a few weeks later for burglarizing someone else's home).
John Munk whatttt thatâs insane, youâre so smart to train your dogs that well
@@sophxcat It's really the dog's ability to learn that's smart. I just treat them well, let them know they're really loved, spend a lot of time with them (after all, it took us a while to learn a language) and when we come to an understanding what each other is about, they pick up whatever they want. The sign language was easy. Once they know the trick itself, they pick up on whatever gesture you give at the same time.
@@sophxcat Oh, and the shady looking people thing, when I noticed him watching me, (sometimes) I would lower my head, look around like I was being sneaky (slowly look left and right) and lift my hands a little like I might bump into something and walk slower than I normally would and he picked up on it. I make everything into a fun experience and they can't get enough.
@@johnmunk5067 wow I can really feel your love for animals through the screen! I really want to get a poodle, and since they're so smart I want to teach her how to do a bunch of tricks, including spotting shady people. I think I will try your method of praising over treats :)
@@sophxcat Hope it works. I was just playing with him and he picked it up after only a couple times. Word of caution, I never taught him a real criminal would probably have a gun.

Just wonderful, been searching for "emily larlham dog trainer" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Cidlerna Barking Banisher - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my buddy got great results with it.
Winner of a video, I been tryin to find out about "caesar the dog whisperer" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Cidlerna Barking Banisher - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
I have watched so many of your videos that I have lost count. I am about twelve to fourteen months before the final commitment of bringing a dog home but clearly, I am already studying the responsibility of bringing a dog home. Your commitment, compassion and empathy is clear and appreciated.
My border collieâs outsmarted me. When he nips my feet I will wait to when he stops then I wait a few minutes then give him a treat. Now, whenever he nips my feet (which is so often now) he just sits... excepting a treat. My dog is too smart for my own good
my lab puppy does that too
Get him to understand hes hurting you. Make a very loud "ow!" Or "ouch" or even better, cry. Sometimes those bites hurt enough with pups that you will actually cry. When i was teaching my dog bite inhibition i really truly cried a few times when he nipped cuz his puppy teeth were sharp!!! Make an ouch sound, look upset, disengage with them. Dont treat when they stop as what you said is happening is what happens.
Say ouch loudly the minute they bite down, pretend to be hurt(it helps to hold the spot that they bit you as youre pretending or actually are hurt so they understand that what THEY did hurt you. Rub the spot, hold it, with a pained facial expression and say ouch or ow repeatedly in a pained voice), disengage, and then redirect to toy - say "no, get the toy".
Now when my dog accidentally bites me when playing he backs off immediately and looks contrite, waits for whether im going to completely stop the play session or whether I'm going to redirect(in other words he backs off to assess whether or not he hurt me. If he can tell he hurt me he knows that ill need a few minutes and will likely not play anymore. If im not hurt and he can tell he likely makes sure then gets a toy and brings to me to say "sorry, I got the toy I didnt mean it, ill be more careful") I know it was an accidental bite and he was going for the toy, i redirect, say get the toy and play continues. In this scenario, treats arent used because the reward is you playing with them and the toy. Toys and attention are rewards. Id never treat when they stop biting.
They have the capacity to be empathetic/sympathetic, use that empathy to get them to know they just hurt you and that hurting you also means no more playing with you. They will then try to comfort you and go for the toy instead of feet more and more often.
Immediately break the habit of giving your dog treats after they bite you and then stop and never give into it if he waits for one after. Break the habit immediately, and when he bites now that hes expecting a treat make sure that you are making very loud shows of pain. Say ouch very loud the minute it happens and look incredibly pained sit down and hold your foot and avoid them. Make sure your dog knows they REALLY hurt you.
Dont half ass it at first, bc they think that what theyre doing is playing a funny and that you like it. They have to know its not funny and you absolutely do not like it and it certainly doesnt deserve a reward after.
Dont treat again until after they do something good. They have to do a desired behavior that you asked for specifically to get a treat again after and not when they get the toy. Redirect if you want after a few minutes of pretend agony and say to get the toy. Play with them for a bit, if they do it again, pretend to be in agony again and then completely disengage from play time and dont play again for at least an hour.
Then, sometime later after playtime, ask them to sit or wait or come here or something, and THEN give a treat, but wait a while after the biting to do so. The biting needs to be understood as an unwanted behavior that does not get treats and isnt associated with treats in any way.
My dog will never bite my skin anymore. I sometimes allow him to play with my feet, with shoes on, as I know he wishes I could play rough directly with him instead of through a toy, but he always understands that he can never bite my skin, and visibly avoids it. If I say ow he immediately backs off and is gentler when we recommence. If he does realize that he accidentally has his mouth over my hand and not the toy, he's actually taught himself not to bite down and has been able to stop himself right before he bites down which is incredible that level of self control - thats where you want to get. The minute they realize theyre on one of your hands or feet and not a toy they should be able to stop before biting down, soften their mouth, let go and redirect to a toy.
I dont recommend allowing dogs to bite your shoes or clothing though at first, and likely ever, even though I sometimes allow it. At first it was 100% not allowed because he had to understand he should be biting the toys and not me. I use a certain pair of shoes for it when i do as he can ruin them and i only allow it when i listen to music and am dancing and playing with him, but like i said at first and sometimes ever with certain dogs that probably shouldn't happen.
Olivia Salois thank you! I never knew this, i donât have a dog for now but iâve har ungently dogs before so next time Iâll know how to deal with that behavior!
I hear this all of the time from other trainers! I find that people, especially trainers, tend to forget how they teach a young child when it comes to teaching a dog. The process is so remarkably similar. All of this over thinking when it comes to teaching your dog to look at you really doesn't make sense to me,. At the end of the day, when I ask my dog for their attention, I want to get it. This is the most direct path to that goal for most dogs.
ok

I'm getting so frustrated with my mom cuz she always interrupts me when i'm trying to train my dog. like if my dog does something wrong and i say "bad girl" to her, but my mom at the mean time says "it's ok" to the dog
That undermines you. It's a terrible habit for a parent to have as well. My wife and I never disagree with each other in front of our kids.
I would say look at what you are doing, why are you saying bad girl. A lot of corrections are the fault of the human not the dog. If it IS A legitimate reason to correct just do your training when and where your mother isn't around. also If she's paying the food/vet bills it's not your dog just come to accept that.
Erin Jin try training her in a room with only you there or outside. That way she won't interfere. My mom tried to tell me to just let my puppy run around and do whatever but I told her I wasn't my dog to be educated not like gets that never listened and would chew on everything until I trained him.

Hello Dear
How are you doing today?
I have both types at home a high energy and a low energy dog. I personally love working with the high energy better he is just so much more enthusiastic following cues. Both know the same cues but the high energy learns them much faster and performs them better
I think deep down 100% of u that doesn't have one, and watching this really deep down would love to have the company of one.. i think if u are making the effort to watch something like this and dont have one.. that's just a beautiful thing, i think most of u will be good dog owners and we need people like u to save our animals from shelters. So many dogs are missing the love of a human. I promise u that dogs arent bad animals theyre only bad owners. Animals cant speak for themselves, we need to be the voice for them. They really need our support.

You are welcome. To answer your question: Because this is a super fast and easy way to get results humanely and fast. Thanks for the tips and positive energy. Your knowledge and experience is a ton of help and I'm looking forward to better training my pup.
a friend of mine just got a 5 month old beagle and it kind of became my dog too. we try desperately to train her with positive feedbacks but she seems to be just not so interested into treats... It doesn't seem to be a trust or love issue because she is always happy to see me, seeks attention and loves to snug herself on the coutch with me. the other day she was a little sleepy and i pet her gently and she started to smile... all that stuff so I'm pretty sure she loves and trusts me and her owner. And we do play alot with her, go out several times a day for longer periods of time and let her be a dog (meaning, we don't treat her like a human baby). But she pulls like a crazy person, doesn't really listen to her name and it is mostly luck if she listens.... and it is really hard to reward good behaviour and cement it if she doesn't take the damn treat..... any suggestions?
This is actually my dream job!
Mine too
I just adopted a pup, he's 10 months old and really hyperactive....how long should i let him acclimate him to his surroundings until i can try to train him basic things ?
We just got an 8 months old puppy from a shelter and I'm gonnateach her tricks like I did with our 2 years old. For now she is very stubbord, but I hope things will go better
Hope you guys like the video! Here's a playlist that will show you how to teach your dog all of the basics in order as well as how to resolve common behavior issues! Thank you! czcams.com/play/PLMssKIjsDxXmMGypWsr8u-yGOUSoPoozb.html

Hei Zak i have a couple question because we got a dobermann 4 weeks old and i have really no idea how much food i should give him ? I have red a lot of articles but everyone is saying something else so i am asking you because you have worked with them for so long. And it would be nice if you could give me some tips basically for everything from food to how much his weight should be and how often do he needs to go to the toilet. I am looking forward to your response and have a nice day
Hi Zak, I find your videos so helpful. I need to train my energetic dog to come and get me when he hears a bell, could you suggest a video or a simple way to train this, please? Thank you
Could you use a word of positive reinforcement like "good boy" instead of the clicker?
Please help: We just got a new 4 week old puppy and we noticed that our
keeps mounting her and, well, humping her. He does this whenever no one
is watching, and the puppy keeps whimpering when he does it. Just the
other day, I went down to the basement and I found them both there with
our cameras set up and on.
Wow, this was helpful. I have a question. Is it too late to train a 7 year old dog? (He's almost 8)
AnimalLover I don't think so, I was teaching a 6 Year Old Golden Retriever "Let go" and she is slowly getting it.

I just taught my dog to lie down (somewhat, it's a start though cos he now understands what I want from him), to not eat a treat until I give it to him and to stay put in 10-15 mins. Amazingly simple techniques and just amazing overall! Thank you đ„°

my dog confuses lay down with sit down sometimes.
Real question is what kinda treat are you giving them?
A Scooby Snack
hes giving them cooked chicken
My dog is so picky lol I'm asking the same question
Dead dog meat
I give my dog chicken but you can also use their normal food if youâre doing intensive training and need to give a lot of the food and you can just give a little bit less during meals
I dont even have a dog but I'm here.
Might as well try this to my sisterđ
I'm only 11 and in watching these because I'm getting my own dog that I have to train and that in completely responsible for.

Omg I was just searching up âhow to train your dogâ and i pressed this video and I watched it all and I was like woooowww I am going to subscribe!!!!
My dog automatically learns new tricks, I didn't even teach him sit and yet he learned it somehow
Tony Benny Mine doesnât pee in the house and we didnât even attempt to teach him. Yet our 2 other dogs weâve tried to train still pee inside.
you're an animal at what you do and I mean that in a good way you're a genius great job you really help me out thank you
So, for the dog trainers in the comments.
I got a puppy several weeks ago. Now I am pretty knowledgeable about dogs, and my parents raised Dalmatians puppies for several years, so most knowledge is covered. However there is one thing that none of us can really understand. Sometimes he pitches this horrible screaming fit when we take something like a cat food can away. And he bites and draws blood and is like losing his mind. We have gotten it to the point that he no longer does it with food or raw hides, but on occasion he just looses it when we take something like a cat food can away. Heâs had this problem since we got him. Heâs a very good, smart, and easy to train puppy, we just donât know where those fits come from.
Possibly a hint to where that comes from is he was weaned at three weeks. And we thought he was six and when we picked him up he was four weeks. He has plenty of dogs to learn from, and goes out often. He is nine weeks old.
I commented on another video of yours about getting a puppy but my conscience is kicking in and I'm thinking to rescue a dog instead whos either young enough to train or too old to chase a cat. Would appreciate more videos on older dogs, over 5 months old, starting from the beginning hun.
Thanks :)
My lazy dog : no, no tricks just treats.
Hey Zak, I love your videos and am happy to say that through your advice Marley (the dog of the house, a Chihuahua) has learned some mighty cute tricks! However, she gets anxiety sometimes when we're out - specifically at PetSmart - and she shakes like a leaf and tucks her tail. I was wondering if you could do a video on dog anxiety and whether or not you like products such as the ThunderShirt for anxiety relief. Thanks for everything you do! :)
Thank you very much for this tutorial! My family is considering on getting a new dog, and we were completely clueless about how to train it.
