    I grew up doing this exact install with my father for all outlets. I just got a fix-me-upper for my first house and need to install this outlet 8n the kitchen, replacing a normal outlet for a convection/microwave combo. Thanks for the quick, informative how-to. Refreshed my memory, especially about not jamming the wires into the box, but working with them. Also, GREAT tip on the double box with bigger faceplate. I was going to do a single, this saved me hassle and it LOOKS way nicer. New convection microwave successfully installed. Now onto all my other honey-dos. Thank you! Subscribed.

    The two hots are both 120 volts, but they have OPPOSITE PHASE - they come from opposite terminals from the street transformer, i.e. in your meter 3 wires enter : two hots and a return wire called the neutral. The neutral comes from the middle winding of the transformer so voltage between hot-neutral is 120 v, but between the two hots is 240 volts. In the panel it can be seen the two separate rails for the hot wires and the common middle rail for the return wire (the neutral).

    Good video, two things to note; when installing the wires make sure you don't have insulation ("the coating on the outside of the wire") in the receptacle. Cut enough to the point where you can just barely see the exposed wire. Two, don't ever cut back the ground as much as he did in this video, it is insulation, and you should never over expose any wire. Cut only as much as you need to clear the insulation when installing. I don't know why he didn't show the installation on the box, but to each there own.

    • @RonnieCarter38501
      @RonnieCarter38501 Před rokem +1

      Why are you telling people not to expose the ground wire? Lots of times there is no insulation on the wire to begin with. There is no harm in that. Weird.

  • @DarronRansbarger
    @DarronRansbarger Před 7 lety +6

    Thanks for the video. Can you explain why there are 2 hots, 1 neutral, and 1 ground? I've seen several videos showing just 2 hots and a ground. What is the neutral for? Is it for a separate 120v application within the same appliance (using just one of the hot lines plus the neutral)? I'm trying to understand the multiple different 240v setups that I'm seeing.

    • @soloban81
      @soloban81 Před 7 lety +5

      Darron with a four wire system think of it this way... between each hot and neutral is 120V. Between the hot you have 240V. Some 240V appliances like a stove or dryer will tap one of the 120V sides and use that to power the control panels and tumbler motors while the 240V is used only for the heater elements.

    • @djscrizzle
      @djscrizzle Před 7 lety +4

      There was once a time, prior to 1996, where three-wire service on a NEMA 10-30 was the standard in houses that fed the circuit from the main service panel, and used concentric neutral cable (Style SEU) to feed the receptacle.
      The reason for this was to save copper, and cut costs, since ground current was tiny and rare in comparison to neutral current from the dryer motor... The problem arises when there's a fault and the combined wire is loose somewhere.
      The fault current then has nowhere to go, until someone touches the unit, resulting in anything from a mild zap, to a full-on electrocution, taking a life.
      Mobile homes & trailers have always used 4-wire circuits since the panel in the bldg is in fact a subpanel, downstream from a meter pedestal or other disconnect.
      Also of note, using a style of 10-3 romex cable or style of SER cable with NO ground (hasn't been made in decades) has always been in violation of the NEC, despite inspectors letting it go, and the installation existing in thousands of houses./
      If you run across these cable types, remove them from service and replace with 10-3G Romex or similar, and a NEMA 14-30 receptacle.

    • @TheShospitali
      @TheShospitali Před 2 lety

      I think it was just 2 hots required for dryer at one time then 2 hots & a ground. Then the Electric Code was updated again that you needed 2 Hots 1 Nuetral & One Ground was considered to be safer.

      The usual advice is to change the cord. it's dead easy, since it hits a connection block under a cover near the cord entry.
      Sometimes people foolishly replace a four-prong receptacle to a three prong one instead of just changing the cord. Pull yours off the wall and double-check that this is/isn't the case. If there's 4 wires in the wall, pop in a NEMA 14-30 receptacle and you're set!

    An 1 1/2” hole in that bottom plate seams excessive. In doing so, you have removed almost half the width/material and strength of your 2x4 bottom plate. And it’s more the angle in which you have drilled your holes, rather than the stiffness of the wire that makes it hard to fish. However 10 gauge is a harder product to work with, I will give you that lol.

      If you're lucky, there's some slack in the attic or basement. On occasion, you can re-route the cable a little towards the far end and get a foot or so that's needed. Be sure to re-staple or protect it to meet code requirements, where you live.

      Please don't take offense at this, but if you don't know more than this, you should have a professional do the work. Any 240V circuit will have at least two hots and a neutral, and more recently, a fourth wire for the ground. And if you had a "3-prong" dryer outlet in the past, you definitely had two hot wires. Don't get hurt.

So doing some investigating trying to eliminate the additional circuit I noticed it powered other lights in the house and a gfi plug. Now they did not have a double breaker. They had wired to two seperate breakers. So if I install a double breaker for the dryer will It burn it out? And what do I do with the other circuit that was piggy backing on the 3 prong plug?

    • @TexasArcadesTV
      @TexasArcadesTV Před 7 lety

      el blanco es Neutral ese siempre va con el centro, El negro y el rojo no interesan si van cambiados pues cada uno es igual de 120v(120v+120v=240v) el cable que no tiene color o de cobre solido es Tierra, ese es solo para que este la toma islada, ese va atornillado dodnde esta una tuerca o cable color verde o en una ploga es el de arriva redondo.

      @KevinPolin Před 8 lety

      It will not get loose because it is for a dryer. (once you plug in the dryer it is fixed for several years) If it was for a plug that is used a lot it will definitely get loose. I agree with you.

    Need help please!!! Recently had a/c unit installedvin my home but the guy that installed the breaker moved my breaker from the dryer to place it in a different spot. Well he broke my 30 amp breaker n I replace it to 2/15 amp breaker but my dryer is not heating up so I bought a use dryer thinking that my breaker broke but it does the same it only blows cold air? What did I do wrong? Can anybody help me????

    • @TexasArcadesTV
      @TexasArcadesTV Před 7 lety +2

      Most likely he didn't plug both hot wires back in. Your dryer turns on and spins because it uses one of the 120v for that portion, but the heating element needs 240v which is both hot wires (120v+120v=240v). Take a multi-meter or a 240v test prove and check the outlet behind the dryer. You should have 120v on both ends (the center is neutral so one end of the prove goes in there), then test both right and left sides. You should have 120v on each side, if you don't you have to figure out if its the breaker or if the wires on the panel were not connected properly. BTW you don't need 2 30amp breakers, 2 15amp are just fine if its a dryer, Electric ranges do need the 30amp breakers.

    • @djscrizzle
      @djscrizzle Před 7 lety

      A shortcut, is to test the 2 phases. If correct, you'll get 240V (or 208 on a 3ph Y system) and if wired incorrectly, 0v or nearly 0V.
      Also as a side note, the heating elements of a dryer are rated at 18-24 ampere, so the 15 amp breaker that was incorrectly dropped in will trip about a minute in, depending on the "trip curve" it's been made to. Cook tops usually get 30A on 10/2, ovens, 40A on 8/2 or 8/3 wire, and freestanding ranges are usually setup as 40 or 50 amp circuits on 6/3 cable...

      Norma Celentano hi there your outlet you have will work :)

    • @djscrizzle
      @djscrizzle Před 7 lety

      "220V" is a synonym to 230 or 240 volts. You'll be just fine, since 120/240V plus or minus 10% has been the law of the land for 30 or more years in residences. Occasionally, you'll see 120/208V because you're connecting to a 3 phase Y system, but that's outside the scope of this comment.

    Holy cow taking hate to shade this but WAY too long to get to the point.. 13:10 and pause it, here's the wiring diagram...
    Top - Ground
    Bottom - Neutral
    Left side and Right are hot so it don't matter but I like to do it ;
    Right side - Red
    Left Side - Black
    Secondly man you are working WAY too hard. Tie a string on the wire and knot it a couple times, place the wire at the hole you made, use that wood tool to run it down and fish the wire. Pull it through and done.
