It amazes me that people post video's and don't know basic wiring methods. The bare wire in this case is the grounding conductor (GROUND) the white is the grounded conductor (NEUTRAL) Tape off or cap the white wire in this case at both ends and use the bare wire. A three wire receptacle does not need a return path. If you don't have a green or bare wire it is OK to use a white wire if you permanently mark it green.

    Well done.
    My house has electrical nuance.
The breaker in the breaker cabinet for the dryer is a 30amp.
But the wall plug was for a 50amp plug..??
As was the cord for the dryer.
Why do some home owners mess with that stuff.
You video was great covering the how & the why.
Well done. I will double check the breaker is correct for that outlet.
And get the proper outlet for the 30 amp plug on my new dryer.

If your dryer has a 3 prong cord but you have a 4 prong outlet, change the cord, not the outlet. It's against code to use a 3 prong outlet in new construction. So if your house has a 4 prong outlet, keep it that way.

That was good and to the point. Question: If I take the bare ground wire and clip it to the outlet plate (keeping it away from the two hots and common), would that not be safer? If for some odd reason one of the hot leads came loose in the box and touched the outlet plate, the presence of the ground would trip the breaker, and otherwise (absent the ground), the plate would be energized at 110V were someone (child) to touch the plate (I know, this is a really unlikely scenario). I did clip my ground to the plate, and I"m wondering if there's any specific danger I'm missing by doing this. I have a 3 wire outlet.

Violation of NEC 250.140(B) that allows 3 wire says "... if an equipment grounding conductor is not present in the outlet or junction box...". So that section doesn't apply, you have to use a a four wire receptacle in compliance with 250.140(A), and change the cord per appliance manufacturers instructions.

Ricky, Although you have a very good understanding of how electrical works, there is room for improvement. For instance, the device is not an outlet, it is a receptacle. Also, the NEC has required 4 wire range and dryer receptacles in dwelling units since the early 1990's. The three prong dryer receptacles and cords only still exist in a dwelling built prior to the code change. So in all new construction or remodels, 4 prong shall be used. If your dryer has three prong and your dwelling has 4, change the cord, not the receptacle.
    Best wishes to you, Kevin

So I just moved into a new residence ( new to me) they don't have a hook up for a dryer. So I have a brand new LG dryer with a 3 prong chord? Do I need to buy a new cord then? I planned on installing it. Already bought a metal box, romex, receptacle and breaker. Do I need to ground the ground wire to the metal box? I feel like just pushing the ground wire back like you did in the video isn't the answer. My receptacle only has spots for the 2 hots and neutral.

    • @KevinCoop1
      @KevinCoop1 Před 4 lety

Cody Not sure why you put your question under my comment, but when you buy a new dryer, you have to buy a cord separately. They do not come with cords. I suggest you exchange the 3 prong for a 4 prong cord, get a matching receptacle, 3 wire with ground #10 Romex, and a 30A 2 pole breaker that matches your panel. Follow the instructions inside the dryer on hooking the cord up to it.

Alejandro Marquez Hopefully, you are asking how to connect a four prong cord to a dryer. There is a wiring diagram on the back of the dryer. It will tell you what to do with the white(neutral) and green(ground).
If this is not your question, can you explain a little more what you are doing?

🌹Hi! I pray that you're well and very, very blessed!
🌹I watched your video. I have an Enerlites dryer outlet; and the instruction manual tells me where to put a white, black, and red wire. But the wires in my wall are white, black, and copper. There is NO red wire. So, I put the copper wire in the slot where the manual tells me the red goes. It didn't work. Plus, when I tighten the screw over the wire, the wire slides to the side inside the slot. I can't get it to stay in the middle.🌹
