Changing Presets On A ToneX Pedal Using "MIDI" From A Guitar Effects Processor

  • In this video, I show you how to use MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) to change presets on a ToneX Pedal, using a Guitar Effects Processor. I do it with a Boss GX-100. But you should be able to learn enough from this video, that the same techniques can be used on any Guitar Effects Processor that has MIDI out on it, such as the HX Stomp, or a Helix. You can even send program change messages from a MIDI Controller Pedal, a Keyboard, or your DAW, and yes your ToneX Pedal will change presets. It doesn't really matter what you use to do it, as long as the unit you choose can send program change numbers to the ToneX Pedal.

    Man, I bought this Tonex totally based on your advise! I’m glad I did. Even though I don’t have a Boss modeler - your knowledge makes sense with me on my Line 6 gear. Thanks for such an in depth tutorial. Answered SO many questions. Thank you, brother!

      Yeah, I've really been diggin' into this thing. It's the only modeler that I've ever come close to using as a live gigging rig. I haven't yet, but I'm as close as I've been with any of the other modelers. Man, when you grow up on tube amps like you and I, it's a very difficult transition. One that I've been working on since 2014 when my main guitar rig got stolen. Let me know if you need any help. I'll be more than happy to at least try. By the way... I use 4 On 6, from Lee Ritenour's Wes Bound CD to tweak my PA in different rooms. Works every time!

    Does the GX-100 not have a way to send a defined PC message on a patch change? This may not be relevant, but the Boss MS-3 does. I'd check into it because I think it'd save you a lot of time. Doing PC messages one-for-one, you have to make a patch on the tone-x for every patch on the GX-100, you're losing several patches not being able to use the fourth preset on every GX-100 bank, and if you wanted to change an amp setting, you'd have to change it on every single tone-x patch. I hope the GX-100 is able to let you specify the PC message to save you some time.

    • @GaryAlexanderMusic
      @GaryAlexanderMusic  Před 6 měsíci

      That's a very good suggestion. I'll check into it. I actually like only having the 3 buttons for presets though. I'm using the 4th button for turning effects on and off. Like I can have a clean setting and add a boost for crunch with a second tap of that presets button, and then maybe have a distortion pedal setup on the 4th button. That allows me to basically have three presets in one. I also use a FS-6 to turn Reverb and Chorus off and on. Thanks for your input. I'm going to look into that soon.

      A friend 'TexasJackdaw' gave them to me. But you can do a quick search for Footswitch Toppers and you'll get a ton of results. Sweetwater, Guitar Center, you name it, they all have them. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, including glow in the dark and clear. For pedals with colored light rings around the switches, I think the clear diamond shaped ones look killer. Here's a page on Amazon that has a bunch. www.amazon.com/s?k=Footswitch+toppers&i=mi&crid=3L456SW22QLFN&sprefix=footswitch+toppers%2Cmi%2C93&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

    Thanks Gary for these explanations. I was a bit confused with my SY1000 and my research on bank management had led me astray and you've set me straight. it's true that U01-1 and 0A are not intuitive and my settings were sending me back to 43A ??? So thanks again for your video. For the Number 4 random patch, I'll probably assign it to an effect with the controller pedal, maybe the wha wha first.
    Once you understand the principle, it's not really a problem that the pactch numbers are different.

    It would be great if you could show us how to control settings like reverb on/off, comp on/off, eq, etc.

    • @GaryAlexanderMusic
      @GaryAlexanderMusic  Před 9 měsíci

      In which unit? I'd have to dig a little deeper to find out if you can control those parameters in either unit. You would also have to have something that could send out control change messages. Not sure without checking if the GX-100 will do that or not. An example would be, Control #91 is usually reverb. So control #91=25 would tell a a receiving unit to set the reverb to 25. #91=0 of course would be off, and 127 would be all the way up. #93 is Chorus, so it would be set the same way. #10 is panning, #10=64 is dead center. Anything less than that number would be panned to the left, and anything more than that would be panned to the right, and so on and so fourth. You can find complete midi control change number lists by doing a google search. I'm not sure when I would get the time to try some of that in this application, but if I do I will come back here and let you know. Personally in this application I would just do that by editing the preset to my liking and then just saving it that way. Oh, here's a good example of midi control changes. When you use your expression pedal as a volume control, it's actually telling the main volume in your GX-100 to set a value of #7 (volume) = 0 through 127. 🤔

    What about create a patch in the boss that have the effects I want and also tell to Tonex what bank and tone ABC I want?

    • @GaryAlexanderMusic
      @GaryAlexanderMusic  Před 8 měsíci

      Good question! To try and keep my answer here simple, I'm going to give you just "one" way to do this. If you have already set-up your GX-100 and your TONEX Pedal by the instructions I gave you in this video, do this... All you have to do is save the sound you want to use on your TONEX Pedal to the matching bank and patch number (ABC).
      If you have "NOT" already set-up your GX-100 and your TONEX Pedal by the instructions I gave you in this video, do this... With your MIDI cable unplugged, create your preset in the GX-100, along with the sound you want to use in the TONEX Pedal. Then follow the instructions in this video to set the matching bank and patch number in your GX-100 and your TONEX Pedal. Then save the sound you want to use on your TONEX Pedal to that matching bank and patch number. Plug in your MIDI cable and hit the preset button on the GX-100. If you did it correctly, you should have the sound you want on the TONEX Pedal and the preset on the GX-100 in sync with each other. Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment. You may have just given me an idea for a follow up video to this one.

      A friend gave them to me. They're called Footswitch Toppers. These are made by Mooer. You can get them just about anywhere online. Sweetwater, Amazon, Ebay, etc. They just slip right over top of your footswitchs. And they come in every color of the rainbow. Just do a quick google search and you'll come up with a ton of them. Prices vary. You can get generic ones for as low as like 10 bucks. But I can't guarantee they will fit as snug as these Mooer ones do. If you have buttons a pedal that lights up, like the Line 6 stuff, you can even get glass ones. They're called diamonds. Good luck brother!

      Yes you can still operate ToneX as normal. Plugging a midi cable into it will not lock it. • @GaryAlexanderMusic
      @GaryAlexanderMusic  Před měsícem

      well that depends on what you mean by control. If you want to change presets on your rv500 with the gx100, it's basically the same principal as what you see in this video. I would bet that if you take a MIDI cable and run it from the MIDI Out of your GX100 to the MIDI In of the RV500, it will probably just work fine that way. Otherwise you'll need some more instructions to get them to talk to each other. That you will find in your manuals.
