    After all of the rumours and leaks the Tonex Pedal is finally out! Everything that is great about TONEX from IK Multimedia is now available in pedal form. The pedal integrates with the desktop version of TONEX making it the most accessible and complete amp modeling system available today. I've had TONEX Max since it was released so I'm very familiar with the technology already behind TONEX. Now it's portable. All of the Tone Models in TONEX can now travel with you to Gigs, Practise or anywhere you need to go as a Guitar Player. You can create your own Tone Models and load up the TONEX Pedal with all of your custom presets. Build a flyrig around TONEX. Pair it with REAL Guitar Amplifiers. You can record with it. Customize your Amplifier and Speaker cabinet configurations. It also functions as an audio interface making it potentially the centrepiece of your Guitar Recording Studio. In this video, I show you what it sounds like in a track. I also created a Tone Model of my ENGL Powerball II. How does it compare to the real amp? I show you. I show you several ways to hook up the pedal and the many different ways the TONEX Pedal can make its way into your own rig.

      The future version will hopefully have an effects loop and xlr out. It would be great to have time based pedals after the preamp, but before the output if you are using the as your audio interface. That way you can get your whole pedal board into a DAW easily

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před rokem +5

      I knew this would come up. I spoke to IK about an effects loop. If you record, the time based effects go after the speaker anyways. I tried putting the time based effects at the end of the chain after the TONEX pedal and it sounded great. In a real amp I'm effects loop 100%.

    I appreciate you walking us through the connections, it just about cleared everything up for me, it was a lot more informative than other videos I have watched. One little thing I am unsure of, when you say go out to a PA, would I be able to got straight into a pair of active monitors that take XLRs, or do I need something like a Mixer or some kind of isolation transformer box? Such a cool piece of gear, just getting into this sort of thing pretty much, looks like a picked a good time for it! I had to listen pretty hard to tell any difference when you ran into the effects return.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před rokem

      Awesome! Glad I covered off most of your questions. For live you'd really have to experiment. You need to amplify it somehow. You can do that into any powered system. So straight into a powered PA would do the trick. You could use powered monitors for reference but I don't think the results would be great. But you need to experiment to see what sounds good your YOUR ears...

    Also I don't dwell on "exactly this or that. But TONEX captured my SV-20, '78 2203, JVM, JTM 60, and DSL 40, Fender Blues Jr., '66 Bassman head, '72 Twin Reverb to perfection (haven't gotten around to a bunch of other amps I have). What I found is the magic sauce is to goose the gain up a bout 2 notches out of ten when setting up the capture after training for the gainier stuff. I find most modelling stuff to struggle with sweet cleans and "a little hairy". The TONEX software changed all that. It is good enough that I really really really can't pick anything off on my captures. Do yourself a favor and try the "memory lane" cab in the 4x12 section for your Marshall amp captures you'll possibly not need to look farther for the "right" ir.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před rokem +1

      I noticed that too. It always needs that little push in the gain to get it really close. In iso there is this 3D thing I hear with the real amp over the captures but they are like 90% there and so fun to do. And in a mix? Can’t really the difference. Certainly a good way to build life for your amps. Oooh. Nice tip on the cab. I’ll check it out!

    I got my TONEX Pedal this last March. To be honest, I did have problems with the Pedal straight out of the box. IKM quickly replaced the faulty pedal ... the replacement pedal had some set up problems with my Desktop Computer Interface IKM tech support helped me to solve that problem. I think that any product I purchase should be ready to go, plug n play right out of the box. This stuff does happen, and it happened to me ... the bottom line was that IKM took care of things .... a bit frustrating, and I couldn't use my new pedal for a span of time, but now, it is working! I love the pedal and have many ideas on how to incorporate it into my existing rig. I like the idea of using the effects loop in my amp to pipe my TONEX Pedal output into the power amp. My speaker (in an isolation box) is going to play an important part in the "feel" and responsiveness.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před rokem

      Glad you got everything sorted and that IK was very helpful. So many variables out there with different systems but what's most important is IK stood behind the product. Enjoy the pedal! Sounds like you have a lot of experimenting to do :)

    This is a very good review. You covered almost all the important stuff. I wished this pedal has FX loop built in (since it has stereo output capability, the FX loop should also be stereo loops) & also a separate pair of stereo XLR output with the cab sims/VIR to go to FOH or DAW, while the existing stereo pair 1/4" jacks (with NO cab sims/VIR/IRs) goes to to guitar amp(s). So, i think i'll wait for something else....

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před rokem +1

      Thank you. I knew the question of a loop would come up. But placing effects before or after the TONEX pedal, as I showed in the video, works very well. I’m a tube amp guy and I live in the effects loop. But TONEX is not an amp. It models accurately but it’s not a tube amp with the same organic responses a tube amp has. But creating a signal chain with tone pedals in front and modulation, time and reverb effects after it works VERY well for a super compact setup.

    • @lankududniteshift
      @lankududniteshift Před rokem +2

      @@LonelyRocker I'm sorry that i didn't explained it better cause i forgot to explain why it's not ideal for me personally (but off course there is a way around). I forgot to mention that without an FX loop, i don't think i will be using the ToneX's built in Reverb even if i have it setup like how u'v suggested above (actually that's how i setup my pedal board, where my "amp in a box", which is a AMT F1 , where my tone pedals are in front of the F1 & the wet pedals after the F1). I don't think i want the built in Reverb of the ToneX to then go into my modulations, delays, etc...That's how i'm seeing it...anyway, my apologies if i am still incorrect... But i have to say that the ToneX is way, way better & worth it, compared to the likes of Iridium, ACS1 & especially the trio of the UA's amp in a box (Dream, etc).

    I just ordered one and will use a tube powered amp (Mooer 20w Tube Engine), or if I need more watts I will use my 50w Marshall DSL's return. As far as effects, I have real pedals but rather keep it simple and use my Line6 HXFX or even a full Helix LT for effects only. Add an FX bock in the chain and that will be where this Tonex unit will sit, add effects in front and back of the FX block.

    Hey Dan, well done. Thanks so much for your efforts.
    I was wondering.... this pedal is marketed largely as a capture device but I am more interested in the quality of its sounds without having to capture (factory/community presets etc). Am lazy to do much capturing.
    So is it great in just this role (or maybe better to go FM3/FM9 etc)?
    Cheers, Peter

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks Peter!! I've often said TONEX provides the best amp models for the money. It's not an all in one like the Fractal products but as far as amps and cabs it's just as good in my opinion. I have an FM9 too so Ic an say that. You don't actually capture with the pedal. You do that with the software but the TONEX Pedal comes with the full library of TONEX Tone Models so you will have amps for days. Hope this helps!!

    If i use this like you wah and od in front then modulations delay reverb out to a Headrush powered frfr 12" speaker why would it need an fx loop? This is the same as how a Helix or HR floor board send its signal to the frfr cab then xlr out of frfr cab to the PA so they can mix and i can use my frfr as my monitor or louder if i want. Would this setup w possibly analog pedals on my board play nice w the powered frfr cab like a Helix HR or QC would saying i had an eq pedal at the end to roll off highs and lows like the global eq does on integrated floor units?

      Many are complaining it has no effects loop but it's silly. Load up pedals in front and behind it. I actually got to try the TONEX pedal with the HeadRush FRFR Cab. I think an EQ pedal right before the cab would be a good thing to do. Sounded a bit boomy so an EQ would be be great right before it and it will sound awesome...

    New to amp modeling and cab simulations, looking into running a victory v4 amp with built in 2 notes cab sims, and a toneX in the effects loop for additional preamp channels. If i'm running through a full range speaker with the victory's cab sim, would switching to the toneX bypass the victory's cab sim and allow me to run a different one through the toneX? Or would it cause an issue of having 2 cab sims together?

      Sounds like a nice setup. The Victory has the built in Two Note right? I believe on the back of the amp it summarizes where and when the cab sims are coming out. And with the captor it’s easy to bypass the cabs whenever you need. Hope that helps!

    Great intro to this pedal. If you put the TONEX into the efex loop of a real amp to hear it through the amp speakers, how do you set up the amp so that the 'color' of sound is only, or close to only, the TONEX and not the inherent tones of the amp and speaker?

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  Před 10 měsíci

      The best way to do that is go into the FX Loop but you are plugging your guitar into the TONEX pedal. That neutralizes the preamp on the real amp. The only colour is what the power section offers but that's far less than the preamp. You've typically got resonance and presence (not all amps) but you can noon those but they may come in handy for a little tweaking...

      the website and user interface are a disaster. Plus you cannot have a mix of IR and non-IR outputs like you can on kemper or helix. To me that is a big fail. using it in the fx loop only works on amps with a series fx loop. If it's parallel, you'll have 2 preamps. The amp' and the Tonex. Others you forgot, is into a power amp in of any Modelling Combo, like the Katana or Catalyst, or Line 6 Power CAB. Also used in the FX loop of a Modeller, like the Axe FX, Helix, Helix Stomp etc, along with MIDI, to us Tones Amp as the amp portion of a preset on the Modeller (Modeller preset sends MIDI to switch to appropriate Tonex preset for that overall preset).

      @@ryanmccabe7821 No more than any other digital class a/b power amp would. If anything it may change the feel/response a tiny bit (depending on how you were listening to the Tonex before). Remember the 'preamp' of the Katana is the modelling engine, ALL of the modelling engine, the modelled amp (both pre and power), FX, stomps etc. Using the power amp in, bypasses that and just feeds the signal into the A/B power amp of the Katana, which on the Katana just aplifies it's 'modeller' preamp. 3 - if you want to record your pedalboard sound to your pc, having a delay pedal last on the board (for example), you can’t use the tonex pedal as an audio interface, right?

      My pleasure! To be clear, this pedal is not designed to capture any effects. There is no practical reason why you’d want to do that. For one, that signal would be so complex to model, and from a tone perspective it would just be a jumbled mess. Plus you couldn’t adjust the effects levels. If you want to capture your pedalboard going into an amp on the pedal you just take the last output in your signal chain and plug into the audio input. Then USB into your computer. If you have any pedals connected via the output of TONEX I don’t think the USB will catch those. Only what goes into the input. Hope that helps!

      I would NOT advise that if you want to genuinely amplify the tones on the TONEX Pedal. Going into the front of the amp, whether the clean or dirty channel, will cause the preamp in the amp to respond to the input signal and colour the tone. Like pushing a boost pedal into a clean channel creates some nice breakup (depending on the amp). Going into the loop bypasses the preamp completely and sends the TONEX pedal straight into the power amp amplifying the signal with no influence from the preamp. Hope that helps.

    I have a headrush pedalboard. I just bought the Tonex because I honestly miss having the power to use the pedals I want, without a bunch of extra wiring. The delay/reverb/modulation effects are really basic on my giant headrush. Also, the amp models have just become boring since I’ve had it for 6ish years. Gonna be running a tonex with a Fender fr-12. Hope it’ll stack up to my headrush though my EVH fx loop 😬

    Okay, you're the only one who covers the live situations and I searched and searched. I ultimately found in comments that you have to buy a poweramp to connect it to a cabinet but does the type of poweramp matters ? I mean is there any difference if it's tube, solid state, class A, B, C, D ? I was wondering about a compact D class poweramp.
    Other question ; you mentioned that it you want to jam you can just plug it the PA ? I assume that you do that by a mix console before but as I'm not a sound engineer, how do you do that ? You plug it to one channel of the mix console using the mono left out ?
