    This is possibly the most crystal clear explanation I've come across in a while. The project is wonderful btw. I haven't been a huge fan of the spool drawer idea, but I definitely want to give this one a go. It looks so slick and well put together.

      Happy to do it! There are some advantages for glue still (like if the weight in the bins is super uneven), but if it can be avoided, it's best.

    Hi Joe, First of all thanks for all your work. I'm a big fan from France. I think I printed every thing you designed so far and waiting eagerly every week for your posts ;-) These spool drawers are amazing and finally works for me (I tried many others before...). I'm just struggling a little with the locks. I though initially that there were symmetric and once installed some of them were very loose and some very hard to move (with the same tolerance of course). I saw then that there is an angle on one side and it seems it works fine once installed in the same way (angle of the lock on the top). Not sure if it makes sense so I also wanted to check with you. Thanks again for your designs.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před 2 lety

      Hi Pierre! Yes, I added the angled corner only after making the video - you're right, the latches work best with that angled edge facing up.
      I also recommend the stand, which will keep the drawers from spilling even without the locks. Happy printing!

      @@3DPrinty Hi Joe, Thanks for the quick response. I do use the stand, it does make a big difference! Got it for the angle lock. Mines are pretty loose for now (angle facing up), I'll try now to play with tolerance. Thanks again.

    i lost the cad files for my own filament drawers (boring horizontal ones though)- this looks AWESOME. no hardware at all is a great bonus for something you print a lot of, and i’m a bit sick of drilling accurate holes into my spools. one question- what’s the approx filament usage for a drawer? some of those walls look a bit thick (unless it’s adjustable? not at home rn, otherwise i’d check)

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm glad you like the design!
      Each bin is about 30 grams, depending on your parameters.
      A downside with having a design with 12 bins is that even those smaller prints add up. 12 bins + 2 guides + the stand comes in at 1/3 of a roll! So this isn't a great solution for turning every spool you have into a filament drawer. I just print a bin or two with the last bits of every roll and eventually get a full set for "free". Even the bins in this video came from old and nearly spent rolls of filament.

      Cool idea! I highly recommend using the stand shown in this video: czcams.com/video/TCCuzT0m3fg/video.html. But, if you choose to use it stand-less, that's definitely a spot for additional storage!

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a fair concern - I recommend printing bins using the last bits of nearly spent spools.

    • @3DPrinty

    do you by any chance know on the ender 3 pro how to make the stand printable. it does not seem to fit in the space in cura

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před rokem

      I believe you have a 235x235mm print bed? Each half of the stand should fit that fairly easily - especially if you rotate the stand 30 degrees clockwise around the z-axis.
      You will not be able to fit both sides of the stands at once, though. To split the two halves into separate parts, use the free Mesh Tools plugin that's available in the Cura Marketplace. Here's a video that goes into the process: czcams.com/video/GUsChXYEMLk/video.html
      Or, if you prefer, this functionality is built right into PrusaSlicer by default. Good luck!

      @@3DPrinty I'm going to give this another try again soon! Your design and customisations are the easiest by far! Would love to see a regular horizontal spool storage design. Maybe with a customisation to choose how many dividers? The other templates I've found don't have the same customisation as yours offers to get the right size. Thank you for all that you do to inspire the amateur 3D printing noobs like me.

  • @mildmannered1086

    Maybe my printer is not great and I just have my heated bed too high when I’m printing the other bits, but… Changing the tolerance on the locks doesn’t seem to do a great deal lol. Which way should I tune it? I printed 0.1 0.15 and 0.20 and they all go differently but still finger busting at some boxes. Is there a left and right lock? I keep mixing them up I think… hard to keep track for me lol. Shall I try 97% scale in slicer also?

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před rokem +1

      It COULD be elephant’s foot (bottom layer slightly too squished). My guess is that the locks are being installed upside down (also yes, the 2 sides are different). Before installing a lock, look for a small chamfer on the back of the lock, that should face up. If that still doesn’t work, even looser locks were remixed by Yianni on Thingiverse: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4903888 . Best of luck!

      @@3DPrinty Thank you so much I appreciate that little extra bit about the orientation! I need to pliers them all out just in case.
      I know you’re only installing them one time but I suppose if I was going to be critical I could wonder if there was a way to make universal lock piece that works any orientation. :-P but now I know it is good. I don’t remember specifically reading about left and right locks on the print download? Did I miss it? It could be useful if all of the print parts are just jumping off the PEI
      Thank you too for the remix info!
      I’m in love with the system in general, I printed the full spool of boxes so far and lids, and now going for the locks. I think the boxes could be really really low infill and perimeter width really, they are coming out robust on any settings which is cool (as in no need to really thicken walls or chunk the infill path etc.).
      Yeah, I think the wall that is coming down from the rail on the inside of the box could deboss back out to the spool instead of be flattened - it’s almost too strong and is thinning the internal volume too. It could be a good thing for the customiser as an option because my spool is rigid enough to keep the boxes reinforced(?), but some spools are more wobbly so maybe people want the thick straight down wall then. It would also give you a little bit more length inside to lay some screws flat of certain length!
      Thank you for all your kind free work on the system!

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před rokem

      If I revisit this design (it's one of my oldest projects), there's a very good chance I'll optimize the internal bin volume the way you described. At the time I was going for strength, but I agree that it's not really necessary.
      Unfortunately, the lack of a universal lock is baked into the rest of the design. A truly universal lock would need to be aligned with the center of the spool, if you follow. And that would mean remodeling the bins entirely. I added the chamfer indicator as an update (possibly undocumented) for the same reason you mentioned - I had printed dozens of locks and forgot which ones were which! Hopefully that's an okay compromise.

    Working on a set right now, hope it turns out good. One problem I ran into is that on 2 different slicers, I could not ungroup the STLs (Cura 4.9.1 and Sindoh slicer) so that was a bit of a pain. Had to send the STL to Inventor, make it a solid object, delete the parts I didn't want to print, export STL, open in slicer LOL. Any free software out there that would break out the individual parts easier that anyone knows of? I HAVE to use Sindoh slicer to use the Sindoh printer I'm trying to make these on so just getting Prusaslicer isn't really an option.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před 3 lety

      I don't use Cura that often, but it looks like the free Mesh Tools plugin will do the trick!
      Here's a video from The First Layer that shows how to install it: czcams.com/video/nS0mr7Hommg/video.html
      1. Install Mesh Tools (Marketplace > Plugins > Mesh Tools > Install)
      2. Restart Cura
      3. Open the model
      4. Split the model (Extensions > Mesh Tools > Split Model Into Parts)
      Good luck and happy printing!

      @@3DPrinty Got the rings and first bin printed. It seems that for me, the OpenSCAD model will not create a bin handle if I pick flat. Only way I get a handle is if I pick curved.

    • @3DPrinty
      @3DPrinty  Před 3 lety

      The "flat" handle requires a little more space than the "curved" style, so I'm guessing the spool is on the thinner side?

    • @aharkey1077
      @aharkey1077 Před 3 lety +1

      @@3DPrinty yeah these sindoh roles are thin and on the small side, I kinda figured it was due to that. I wanted the flat handle as I thought the curved would stick out too much but after printing one bin I think I’ll just do curved handles. Have really enjoyed the design so far. Keep up the good work!
