Have you ever wondered why, despite medical advancements, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States? With a staggering statistic revealing that 88% of Americans are not in optimal metabolic health, this talk by Dr. Philip Ovadia, a cardiac surgeon and the founder of Ovadia Heart Health shows a transformative journey triggered by the preventable crisis of a patient. Highlighting often ignored indicators like obesity and diabetes, he advocates for a fundamental shift-from treating to preventing heart disease. Drawing from personal experiences, including shedding 100 pounds, the talk challenges listeners to envision a world where proactive measures and seeking root-cause-focused healthcare keep individuals off the operating table. It's an invitation to rewrite the narrative and aspire to a future where heart disease is an avoidable exception rather than an unfortunate norm. After growing up on Long Island, Dr. Philip Ovadia completed an accelerated Pre-Med/Medical School program at The Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College (now The Sidney Kimmel College of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University). He went on to complete a residency in General Surgery followed by a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. Ovadia has been a practicing heart surgeon since 2005. He has been married to his wife Shelly since 2010 and they have two daughters, Eva (12) and Layla (10). Starting in 2016, Philip started a journey to fix his health challenges, a lifelong battle with obesity and pre-diabetes. He successfully lost nearly 100 pounds and maintained that weight loss. Dr. Ovadia is now on a mission to help as many people as possible to avoid the need for heart surgery. He recently authored the book, “Stay Off My Operating Table.” Philip is excited to be returning to Jefferson to Redefine Possible and educate people to Feed Your Heart: The Secrets to Staying Off the Operating Table. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
The call to action is clear: assess metabolic health, eat real food, move, sleep, manage stress. Simple yet powerful.
No 👎! You're gonna cause my pharmaceutical stocks to go down!!! 😳
He forgot pick your parents better. Genetics play a big part.
@@Idiotsincarshere Genetics can only determine 'predisposition', if you don't eat that way in the first place, you don't get the disease.
But, you can't control and pick your parents .
So take charge now
@@TrudyContos-gq1bw You could do everything perfect and still die young due to genetics. Unless you’re morbidly obese, abuse drugs and ETOH or live recklessly, you’re not going to do much to escape your heredity.
Metabolic health education is crucial. We can't keep ignoring preventable factors like insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance and metabolic health should be part of every heart disease conversation. Such vital information
Absolutely agree, ,I was diagnosed 15 years ago as a type 2 diabetic. Unfortunately 6 members of my immediate family were also diabetic. Diabetic management has been extremely difficult but my shift to a lower carbohydrate eating plan absolutely minimum processed foods and moderate weekly exercise has saved my life as a man nearly 60 year's old. I'm in better shape now than my mid thirties and 30 pounds lighter. Stay well.
Loved what he said about how we need to rethink instead of restrict. Whole foods can be just as delicious as all the fried/processed "treats"
Absolutely, there are so many inventive recipes. I've seen chocolate mousse made from tofu!!
He shows just how important it is to have good metabolic health to prevent heart problems. It's really motivating to see a doctor encouraging people to take steps to avoid needing surgery instead of the usual operate and medicate spiel
Heart-breaking to hear about that 39 y.o. mother, especially when he goes on to explain how the system failed her but it's a credit to him that he chose to turn that moment into the catalyst for creating change
I liked what he said about the simplicity of health actions. It's refreshing because there's so much information that's often pretty conflicting
Surrounding yourself with a supportive community is huge. It's so much easier to stay motivated when you've got people cheering you on and holding you accountable.
I think so too, community is everything
Absolutely, even just having people to do activities with is so helpful
We think so too, which is why we started the Heart Health Hub which is a community of likeminded people on a mission to improve their health.
Fantastic. I completely agree. I have eliminated medical conditions by following this advice. Can i add to the list..Eat less or smaller portions, eat less frequently (let your body rest from food) and finally fast. I fast 3 nights a week(by this i mesn i eat breakfast, big dinner and then relax and go to bed early (this allows me to have a fast 4pm to 7am). Its amazing how good your body feels when you rest from food..
That is 15 hours of rest. I do it too. Food can be very bad. I hope people understand the power of intermittent fasting, allowing the system to rest from the continuous processing and filtering of food.
Wow... the eating less frequently is pretty interesting. It makes sense but I've just never heard that before
@@chewysbacka its depends what your starting point is. But many scientists say we are constantly snackibg or eating something, its almost a disorder created by food industry to keep us consuming. But health experts agree we should eat better quality, snack less and generally let our body recover from a meal..if you think back to your parents/grandparents-parents.. its obvious times have changed..
I think finding a GP who encourages this from the get go is what's crucial here. Lots of people need that kind of reframe on their approach to health
Communities supporting each other in health goals is such a powerful concept for a healthier society!
So true, which is why we started the Heart Health Hub which is a community of likeminded people on a mission to improve their health.
I'm feeling fired up to be part of the solution in my own circles. Gotta walk the walk if I'm gonna talk the talk!
That's awesome, and yes literally lol go on walks with all your friends!!
The simplicity of 'eat real food' is profound. It's time to rethink our relationship with what we eat.
Yes, that's so true!
I've been vegetarian (with a bit of fish here and there) for most of my life but recently stopped eating dairy after a blood test showed higher cholesterol. I'm a cheese addict do thought it would be really hard.
In fact, it was pretty easy and I feel the best I've felt in a good while!
Simple fruit and veg is overlooked as a big key to our nutrition 🙏
@@lspag7415 see even vegetarians can have poor blood markers. Could it be hereditary? My wife and her family have high cholesterol and they all live to 90+
Ha yes No more Oreos, ding dongs and Twinkies!
@@Siameezkattwo Sounds boring ! 🥱
Simple is Key. Thanks for commenting.
Learning to assess and improve metabolic health seems like a vital step. Much better advice than the standard, "just be in a caloric deficit" in terms of losing weight.
Walking is a super power
Fasting is a miracle
lol what?
Stop eating shi+.
Absolutely right.....
Fact!
I think his own transformation (losing so much weight and overcoming pre-diabetes), adds credibility to his message. It demonstrates that positive changes are achievable and can have a massive impact on one's health and quality of life.
Thank you for sharing.
I'm 76, and practice all he suggests. I remain pain and meds-free. I totally agree with him.
Congratulations!
I’m 70 and I’m the same way; no meds, no pain.
@jaysmith3361 I work full time, work on my farm, ride a bike and swim regularly. No meds at all. Carnivore all the way
I’m 26, practice all he suggests, and I’m riddled with pain and need lots of ibuprofen and Tylenol to deal with pain
65 vegan all the way. Best health ever!
"A rising tide lifts all boats" is a weirdly beautiful quote, thank you.
All so true !!! Been struggling for 40 years with my weight. Lost and gained back so many pounds, it's a true addition !!!! Thanks Doc 👍
Hearing about his own health transformation adds such a personal touch to his message. It's one thing to preach change; it's another to embody it.
Probably the first doctor who I actually like and speaks truth literally from the heart. Having been in healthcare for 30 years and seeing a lot of death and healing, my question has always been why aren’t we, as a society, seeking preventative medicine? I don’t like medications although some are life saving. The fact that our food supply has been tampered with by the production companies and industry is very concerning. In foreign countries they buy the same products but the ingredients are different (less artificial or manmade) and more healthy. Why are we being poisoned? He gave wonderful advice on how to be and live better and longer.
Because it’s all about MONEY & POLITICS.
@@DanielFHarb-rx1yw Such a sad fact but a fact nonetheless
The food industry is a cartel ... it must change.
I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to actually work in healthcare and see how much nonsense there is
Dr. Anthony Chaffee- brain surgeon, Dr. Shawn Baker = Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ken Berry = Family practice. Dr. Perlmutter. Dr. Georgia Ede, Dr. Kiltz, Dr. Tony Hampton. Dr. Sten Eckberg- great doctors healing humanity through diet.
Huge respect for acknowledging the failures of the medical system. It's time for a holistic approach.
Ayurveda and Chinese medicine has been doing holistic for centuries but big pharma and food and insurance won't support that
Dr Ovadia, so glad to see you on a Ted Talk!
Or
Thanks for your support @MissSadara!
Dr. O is awesome. Speaking to us in layman’s terms on what we can do without popping pills and teaching us how to monitor our own health.
lol I love your handle and I agree he's awesome!
Keep preaching the truth about heart disease instead of what pharma and food industries want us to believe.
absolutely, so much misinformation to cut through
Exactly!
I am surprised Ted did not take this down as they have for many similar talks; maybe things are starting to change.
Eating low on the food chain helps, exercise helps, but some of the risk is genetic and not impacted much by personal choices. Sorry. Look at the former President, who doesn't do anything to take care of his health. There are others who are active and skinny and still get coronary artery disease. Pharmaceuticals do have a role for some of us.
Well, they already made their $$ from the vacx. Stay tuned for the next pandemic. In the meantime get the real truth from Dr Shiva Ayadurai where he gives you the truth at the right time and not after the fact like these others do. You wanna bet this doc forced the vacx on his patients too bribing his patients with free ice cream? Ice cream ladened with diabetes inducing sugar??
Dr. Ovadia: You’re a great inspiration to a new generation of physicians, especially to PSU/Jefferson Progs 😅😅
Thank you so much!
Hearing about his own health challenges made his message a lot more relatable and I'm motivated to take charge of my health after hearing this!
It's inspiring to see a medical professional advocate for lifestyle changes over just treatment of symptoms.
Thank God for heart surgeons. I am 20 years out from my 4 vessel by pass.
How old are you?
Assess your metabolic health:
1. Eat whole real food
2. Move more
3. Sleep more
4. Manage stress with strong community
5. Find a physician that can manage your health

We need a doctor who knows about nutrition or study ourselves on CZcams about nutrition.

The statistics on metabolic health in the US are shocking. This talk highlights the urgent need for dietary and lifestyle education. Kudos to Dr. Ovadia for shining a light on this.
Absolutely! It's high time we prioritize education on dietary and lifestyle choices to tackle the alarming statistics on metabolic health.
Thx for great info. A doc with a heart of an ANGEL.
Love, Salute and Respect for you Dr. Philip Ovadia.
Thank you!
I can't imagine just how deep the emotional impact of losing a patient would be.
Powerful thank you for creating change in a broken system🙏🏽
Thank you!
Real food, movement, and sleep - a trifecta for well-being
Philip is the absolute man! Inspiring message. Keep fixing hearts my man. ♥️
Thank you!
I appreciate what he says about breaking the cycle of generational bad habits. It's really not easy when the eating habits you learnt were unhealthy to begin with, now you add all the convenience we have now and it's really tough for some people
Thank you! Breaking generational bad habits, especially around unhealthy eating, is tough. The convenience of unhealthy options today adds to the challenge. However, acknowledging this difficulty is crucial. Support, education, and resources can help break these cycles and promote healthier choices.
Small steps can lead to big changes in health over time. I've seen it firsthand and it's definitely worth doing.
Absolutely, small steps can indeed lead to significant changes in health over time. Keep up the great work, and remember that every step you take towards better health is worth it!
I think his personal journey and professional insights are a powerful reminder that preventive care is key.
Absolutely
I appreciate the practical tips on nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management. Thinking that aiming for those better habits can help with something as big as heart disease is pretty cool!
definitely, it all adds up
We appreciate the support!
This man is fantastic. This is wisdom.
Thank you!
I agree there should be much more emphasis on preventive care. I was diagnosed with PCOS and one of the symptoms is insulin resistance. I was also pre-diabetic but simple changes to my diet and of course, exercise, helped so much to the point where I don't even have to take meds for PCOS anymore. It absolutely works.
This really shows why the need for a shift towards root cause treatment in healthcare is so needed right now
I can't recall being taught about metabolic good health and how important it is to my longevity.
It is shameful gaslighting.
Communities supporting each other in health goals is such a beautiful notion! There is strength in unity and sometimes we all need the extra motivation
Read his book, listened to many of his interviews. Wish this man could be my cardiologist. He’s among the great Doctors out there trying to fix a broken medical, science, pharmaceutical, and food system.
Thank you!
Having seen the harmful impact of heart disease up close, his message to take action is strong. If we help people take control of their health, we can aim for a future where heart disease isn't the top cause of death anymore.
Saving lives by empowering people could be the ripple effect that creates a healthier world! If we're vocal enough about these things that seem to be so hidden from common knowledge well, that's a great first step IMO
Share, Share, Share this as well as many others Dr Ovadia has made.
We must take control of our own bodies and learn what " Makes it tick"!
I especially liked the video he made with Dr Eric Berg.
Thank you!
Agree! I'll check that one out thanks
Well done, heartfelt, credible. My only disappointment, due to censors, is he didn’t disclose that his whole food recommendations go beyond avoiding ultra processed foods, to personal and evidence-based successful use of a low carb way of eating being key to long term metabolic health for almost all people.
Why would that be censored?

True! Community is so important!
His advice on things like what you eat, how you move, your sleep habits, and managing stress gives a complete approach to keeping your heart healthy, something that's much needed as opposed to taking all sorts of medications to try and manage it
Prevention over cure would make such an incredible difference to our health care system.
That's so true, I can't even imagine how much it would ease things up
Fast forward to 8:27. Eat better, exercise, sleep, reduce stress, have friends, get a better doctor.
Thank you
Getting a better doctor is unfortunately the toughest part. Sadly 😞
Thank you Dr Ovadia. I am 77, have been carnivore now for almost 10 months. My severe arthritis pain is gone, the hand tremor s that kept me from eating soup, or lifting my coffee cup for a refill are gone. My heart medication has been cut in half. I almost wish you had gone one step further and recommending a ketogenic diet, or even ketovore or carnivore. Bless you. Hopefully people hearing this or that were in the audience will research how you lost your 100 pounds and metabolic health.
Did you have essential tremor? How long did it take to disappear? Do you believe it went away due to your carnivore diet?
@@barbaraeconomos4753I had quit eating soup and held a cup of coffee with two hands. I just assumed it went with getting old and never talked to a Dr about it. Seeing someone else last week with the problem made me suddenly realize I didn't have it any more. Definitely because of carnivore, as are the disappearance of terrible arthritis pain, etc.
Probably didn’t mention it because many of us are very healthy as vegans. He’s not promoting a diet but a healthy diet. He also said, “eat food that grows from the ground” which is vegetables. I’m 55 never been on meds, pain free and even had an inflammation test which was only 2 on the scale and I don’t eat meat. My cholesterol runs 150. I’m 5 10” 160 lbs. So carnivore is not for everyone maybe you.
@@chriscarpunky If he was to tell the truth about the Carnivore diet (of which he is in favor of) this TedX would have been blocked the talk, like they did with Mikhaila Peterson's TedX talk.

the takeaway about small, consistent changes adding up over time was really good to hear... the fact that it's not about being perfect, but just making better choices more often than not makes it feel a lot more achievable
What a wonderful Doctor you are. There are so many times I have felt dismissed by Doctors and leave somewhat perplexed thinking, I guess I'll have to wait for an emergency to be heard. And then of course I'm recognizing my health is truly in my hands from the inside out. Bazaar where we are now, and in recognizing health care is also a business, the care factor places tremendous stress on health care worker. Education for prevention is indeed next level caring and I still wonder why some of things on the shelves in supermarkets are even legal.

Thank you for your honesty doctor ... kudos! It always has been the basics of proper diet, exercise, stress, sleep management that sounds simple yet hard to practice continuously in this modern society. I agree poor eating habits can be a generational thing and breaking those habits is a noble mission worth striving for!
The fundamental problem is that the economic model is wrong. We pay an industry to keep us sick. We need to restructure the financial model pay them when we are healthy. We need to start by removing the drug industry reps from every doctor training college in North America.
It is not about drug reps. They control the media. The truth is not reported. They stop the truth.
Yes a bit like bringing your car to the garage, you pay them after they’ve fixed it. Simples.😅
If they only got paid if they actually healed someone, they would go broke in a month. They make their money with sustaining misery.
@@rosiesweeney7856
Add the fast & junk food industries to that recipe!
I appreciate how he breaks down simple, achievable steps for improving metabolic health, like eating whole foods, moving more, sleeping better, and managing stress through community support.
His emphasis on seeking healthcare providers who prioritize treating the root cause over just managing symptoms is really important. It shows we need to change how we think about preventing and handling diseases because what we're doing right now just isn't sustainable. Those stats on the amount of money it costs the healthcare system really speak to that.
THIS yes this struck me as well, how sometimes the doctor you see won't even give you this kind of advice
Love the emphasis on a positive mindset! I agree that positivity can lead to new behaviors because the mind-body connection is real and a lot more poignant than we give it credit for!!

I wasn't expected to live into my 60s because of my lifestyle..... Later, I had major heart surgery in 2016 after which I followed similar changes explained in this video. My life since then has completely altered. I lost 112 lbs, I got rid of my car, and last year, for example, I cycled 10340 miles, I run 5 miles a week, and I teach 6 hours of Tai Chi every week. I had a heart attack in September. I was 43, had been in great health and a hardcore weightlifter since college. I was given a stent where there was a blockage and put on four medications, and everything was good afterward, fortunately my heart didn't sustain any longterm damage. But no kidding, none of the doctors or nurses during my stay, or my follow-ups, had any sustained conversation with me about my diet. They have just been fixated on my cholesterol levels and seeing if the statin medication they gave me was keeping me below a certain number.

With over 80% of Americans with metabolic syndrome/diabetes, why isn’t it a national emergency?
B/c there is lots of $$$ in treating chronic diseases, that's why. Don't blame doctors so much either like I used to.
