- As crazy as this year has been with Covid 19, Elections, Hurricanes, and Wildfires we could at least still count on the Green Race to bring us all together, at least virtually, to witness and be a part of the good stuff: friends, stories, a great place, great kayaking, and always a little chaos.
Shane Benedict brings you the Sights and Sounds of Green Race day 2020. This year because of the pandemic the organizers asked the crowds to stay away and in return, John Grace and crew ran a fiber optic cable 3000 feet out of the gorge and to a hotspot on the rim.
For the first time ever the Green Race was live! With 6 cameras up and down the racecourse and a couple of drones buzzing around the coverage was fast and furious.
It was also great to have former Green Race champ Al Gregory and high energy banter master Brian Miller commentating on the event and covering the highlights.

I've never kayaked white what but have been watching the sport my entire life. These are always my favorite videos, the Green Race.
Congratulations to the organizers, the racers, the tech team, mother nature, and others I'm sure I forget. Looks like one of the best Green Races ever held!

Yup. You need to enter beforehand obviously but its a huge event there in the mountains of North Carolina. It's a beautiful spot, i lived there for 5 years and paddled the *lower* green often (i lived there just before boats and people got good enough and crazy enough to run the narrows portions).
The run itself is open year round if there is water flowing and the access is public so if you have a solid group you can go whenever, not just during the race. That section is way past any skill level ill ever obtain in my little LL remix!

A question Why do they scream in an unbridled way ????? Why do they scream like that? It is difficult for me to understand the emotion from that wild scream ...
It gives me great hope as a paddler that some people who run this shit in a long boat still need to be reminded to keep their head down when they roll

Why don’t they wear face protection?
Some do. Obviously a full face would be more protective and probably a good move in this context. In normal kayaking on a hard river like this communication is really important and a lot of people choose not to wear the full face because of communication problems. But there is a price to pay sometimes.
So much for not allowing spectators.
There actually were very few spectators, racers, safety, and media totally out numbered the folks just watching.

tal vez a muchos de ellos, les pasaría lo mismo viendo a la gente en una cancha de futbol, a mi me sorprendió, de buena manera ver a gente divertirse muy fervorosamente, abrazo.
