  • The Audi RSQ e-tron is one of the most ambitious competition cars ever created, and certainly the most technically complicated vehicle ever to tackle the Dakar. This 671bhp range-extender EV off-road monster is the motorsport equivalent of a moon shot. And there’s a lot to get your head around, so let Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage be your guide.

      More like a petrol powered diesel locomotive. They also use a Diesel engine to drive a electic generator and then power the wheels with electric motors with the power from the diesel engine. This is basically the same thing but not on tracks.

    • @qwertz4035
      @qwertz4035 Před 2 lety +9

      Thats because you cant really have a gearbox or a clutch on a train because of the huge weight of a train. The clutch would just burn in like a Minute. So they use that method to basically have a 'electric clutch'

    Interesting. If the IC engine and generator is packed together, doing work on the IC engine should be easy because the whole package can be taken out of the car easily since there is no mechanical connections to the car other than mounting and electrical cables.

    This is essentially the same architectural framework as a Chevy Volt or a BMW i3 w/rex. I wish more cars were available this way. The i3 rex is crap as it is underpowered for continuous use, but this setup allows engineers to absolutely optimize the gas engine for efficiency at one operating point. The BEV-only folks will nay-say the advantages of this platform over a BEV, but the performance cannot be disputed.

    • @mantan_rtw
