I was scared of playing the master pieces as a kid. I was told that the timer is all the time you get to play the games, ever. I avoided the masterpieces since I didn't want to waste my one chance to play the games. It wasn't until this video that I learned that they were replayable...
Oh my goodness that is the greatest story I’ve ever hear haha. I think if they gave us only one chance to play 30 seconds of Donkey Kong I’d go insane
I have a very specific memory about Masterpieces. One day I just started playing the Kirby’s Adventure masterpiece over and over and trying to get as far as I could before it timed me out. I also ate a ton of Wild Grape Pop Tarts, which I don’t even like that much? It’s a strangely vivid, hyper-nostalgic memory, yet I wouldn’t say that it had much influence on me. I did eventually play Kirby’s Epic Yarn and I enjoyed it, but Brawl’s core gameplay was more responsible for that; haven’t played a Kirby game since.
LOL the grape pop tart part got me. I get the feeling though. Sometimes those memories that have no business sticking out just do, but they're often among the best

If it wasn't for my cousin showing me the OoT Masterpiece when I was 12, I wouldn't have grown to love the franchise as much as I do now. Didn't know a damn thing about LoZ until I was playing around on the Ocarina. That shit blew my mind!!!. First Zelda game I owned was A Link to the Past/Four Swords on GBA for my 13th birthday!

The OoT demo is pretty dang cool I gotta admit. Easily my favorite demo when I was younger. Glad to see the mode do some good haha
@@MattTrashBoat Oh yeah! Ironically enough, I DID have a modded Wii at the time too (but someone stole my SD card) as well as my gamecube with the og Action Replay that came with its own memory card for adding codes onto.
This video just reminded me how many hours I spent inputting line after line of code. Took me like an hour or so to diddle the Kokiri Rock Boy into an Arwing. First played and completed Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask through the Collector's Edition.
This video really put all that into perspective. So many funny stories I can share again. Thanks for this kicksss video. You definitely earned a new subscriber.

What they should have done to make it actually GOOD EFFORT was allow you to beat ONE LEVEL of each...yes, that's a PROPER DEMO! One level of Mario, reach the first dungeon in the overworld of Zelda 1 and 2 (because the dungeon would be too much for a demo), complete one race in F-Zero, etc. I know it's hard to code in, but that is why they should have put more time and thinking, and understand how good demoes work. This gives players enough time to enjoy the games without feeling cheated of time! They can take their time to enjoy, and they can finish something to feel accomplished more!
The time limits had to be included so people would buy the games on the Virtual Console. If they had the full games playable, then there would be no point for the player to buy them.
The problem is that the time limits are too little to even form an opinion on the games.
Plus, couldn’t they just let you play a tiny segment of the game instead?
So? Smash ultimate is a $60 game. God forbid Nintendo bundles in a few of their old ass games into it as a bonus lol

Oh man, I still remember buying a classic controller ONLY so I could try the masterpieces... and I got exposed to legendary games like starfox 64 and ocarina of time, so I'd say it was a good purchase.
Funny enough it did also subject me to super metroid, but I never knew it would become one of my favorite games ever waaaaay later lol

I feel like Masterpieces is good idea with flawed execution. It's blatant advertising but if it was implied in a less limiting way, we could've had a memorable distraction. Part of me actually wanted them to return for Ultimate, hoping that perhaps it could be the best its ever been.
I personally feel like them being the way they aren't wasn't Sakurai's call as his clearly has a love for retro games. Who knows what we could've gotten if Nintendo didn't try to make these VC ads. Anyways, this video was a good watch, keep it up man.
tbh Masterpieces doesn’t even feel like a true game mode. there’s no need to include a retro game collection if those games only last for a few minutes

I liked the masterpiece mode, if for nothing else, than because of earthbound. Yeah, the 5 minute demo doesn’t even give you enough time to get to the first battle. But it’s that demo that put earthbound on my radar at all.
So glad I grew up with an Atgames Genesis, even if the sound emulation was kind of... iffy.

The Masterpieces are waste of time. I remember in Gameking53's review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl where he criticized them for being a waste of time and that there's no fun you can have with them before the limit runs out. He'd change it by removing it in favor of more Melee stages and even stages from the first game.
It is indeed lame, because they're only weak Wii or Wii U Virtual Console versions under mixed saved files/moments and very limited gameplay. Plus, they really could've picked better games, and some they put in aren't even real masterpiece titles. They're pointless, especially if you own the actual physical release classic games.

The timer is too short to be enjoyable, but this is the kind of thing you look at once then not again.

Great video! I the first time I discovered this mode on brawl back in the day. Spend a couple hours on it but that was nothing like that coin launcher mode, I spend a whole day playing that lol. You have earned my sub, I can’t wait to watch more of your videos!

Mhh I’d view Hero as more of a legacy-esk character, even though his main alt is from a new title. Byleth is def closer to the “ad” fill in, but they’re pretty cool so it’s whateves lol.
I think its funny that of all the masterpieces, the longest game (as far as I know) to be one of them, OOT, is the only one where the credits can be reached in the time limit.

Here’s a fun fact that people didn’t notice, in the Super Smash Bros Wii U masterpiece the original Super Smash Bros for the N64 was suppose to be add in it and that would be the only N64 masterpiece in it but later it was scrapped due to the release of Super Smash Bros Wii U, N64 Emulation wasn’t possible on the Wii U (all this in Wiki)
Man, Smash Bros. Dojo for Brawl was magical. I remember being in 6th grade checking every morning and every evening, reading new and old information over again. I have no doubt a lot of it is nostalgia, but it was such a great way of revealing information.
I never used Miiverse for Smash 4 (or anything), so I don't really have any memories of that. And I didn't know Melee and 64 had websites before their releases.

Wonder if someone ever did a glitched run of Mario 64 on the Masterpieces mode
Mario 64 sadly was never included :( BUT I realllly wish it was because I would assume they'd drop you off inside the castle to run around for a few mins (prob 3-4 at most) which actually wouldn't be quite enough time to beat the game with boundary breaking, but still would be fun regardless

Brawl masterpieces is the inly way ive ever played the first legend of zelda and i feel like as a kid i feel like only managed to make as much progress in that time limit as i would have if i owned the full game back then (absolutely no progress past the first cave where you get the sword)

I only played this mode once as a kid back in 2008.
I suppose making the masterpieces "unlimited" time without saves is like playing reproduction carts with non functioning save batteries ha (excluding the external save storage solutions).
Yet speedrunners still managed to beat OOT within the time limit

8:34 the first sonic Foces has a very small protion of gameplay, it is literally a jump area, a set piece and introduction to the more wide area of the stage and it ends while the player moves, it is almost only the tutorial area of the game.

Good video but I just want to make a comment on how weak the delivery was on the "the joke is misogyny" segment. I don't even understand the punchline either but that delivery with the cartoon sound effects was just confusing. Otherwise this is insanely well done and I can't wait for more documentary - Scott the woz like videos that I wish I saw done more by other people.

Unpopular opinion: I prefer Super Smash Bros 4 over brawl, not because the masterpieces have improved and look a lot better. It's mainly because the characters are more colorful in HD and I love Mario's model in that game and the characters are a lot more stronger than brawl.

Yes! I love this suggestion. A daily fixated time limit would allow you to play the game in its entirety (eventually lol) while also drawing you back to the actual Smash game on the daily. The advertising of the virtual console would still be somewhat intact, since if you’re really into a certain game and want to by pass the daily limit, well just head on down to the eshop to buy it. Perhaps 30 mins would be too much for games like Donkey Kong or Super Mario Bros, so much like it is now maybe have different time limits for different games? I’m not sure
You know what….. fair enough. I can’t think of many bad smash “modes” besides like smash tour but that had it’s own fun of just playing it with friends and making fun of how bad that was. Masterpieces are kinda boring

Brawl is my favorite smash game, and the game I played the most was a bit of Kirby, and a lot of Zelda 1 but never beat it
I dont rly have strong memories attached to the materpieces although i know ive played them. I feel like there's better ways of documenting a character's original essence or w/e because these dont rly seem to be vertical slices, theyre just throwing the player at the beginning and kicking them out 5 steps past the beginning

I remember only really playing them on brawl. Smash 4 I had already played all of them and didn't feel like it after a while.
During brawl I only really played Oot and f-zero since most of which i had a port of some description up to that point

The first time I played masterpieces was brawl. It was in 2009 (I think) I had the red wii that came packaged with nsmbwii and wii sports. I think I also had brawl at the time and I also had a big ass television. And when I say big, I mean when you're a little tyke gamer playing the wii, the TV is giant to your POV. I was having fun on there. Playing on brawls FD (the best one) looking at the chronicles, looking up how to unlock characters online, all the joys. I would end up on the masterpieces section and I spent lots of time on it even though it was short. I enjoyed brawl as a child and I play brawl today for the mods.
As much flack as I gave masterpieces in the video I do have some good memories messing around with it. Ahh, the good ol days.

I kinda understand Nintendo wanting to make money off of their stuff (especially back when the Virtual Console was available for purchase at the same time), but GameCube Animal Crossing did show that they'd be willing to part with these ancient titles for free (or rather, I guess the price of Animal Crossing, which is already a bargain just on its own..... more so since it came with its own memory card packed in). Would be nice if they could find a good middle ground (and no, I do NOT count Switch Online, given that you don't actually own any games and you have to do an online check-in).
And man, I remember those trophy descriptions. They actually got me hyped up to wanna play through every obscure minor release put out by Nintendo (or I would if I had the money and, more importantly, time). I will say, though, I don't mind their loss in Ultimate. Unlike how things were back when Melee was released all the way back in the early 2000s, fan wikis are quite readily available, which makes researching the characters depicted on Ultimate's PNGs a fairly simple task.

wellll there's multiple angles you could look at this from. In a speed running sense she is pretty bad due to being the slowest out of the four. From a casual sense I can def see how her float makes her a bit busted, which I agree it does, but that's why she's suckish. Her float makes it so I always have a small crutch to fall back on when platforming. She can still be fun to mess around with for sure, but I don't like how she devalues needed precision. Dixie Kong from DKC 2 and 3 is a better example of a character having a midair float ability.

World of light wasn't perfect by any means, but I don't think it's even close to being one of the worst modes in smash, was it that badly received?
ehhh whenever I hear someone discussing it, its usually in a not so favorable light. Calling it one of the worst modes throughout the entire series may be a bit harsh, but personally I think it's incredibly tedious and boring, so much so that I haven't even finished it lol. I think my biggest gripe with it is that it's a spiritual successor to Subspace Emissary, which I have my own dislikes about that mode, but I feel as though there's a lot more to enjoy with that package compared to World of Light.
Brawl Masterpieces are better at lease since you can actually beat OoT within the 5 minutes

Also here’s an idea: nix the time limit and limit the content people have access to per game. There! They’re still demos, people would still have to purchase the full game, but now it wouldn’t suck and you can actually get a feel for if you like the game or not without being abruptly shut out.
LOL thanks for pointing that out. I wasn’t sure if someone would or not. So, I’m pretty sure I had yoshi’s story written there in an early version of the script and forgot to change it while editing the graphics for that part. After rendering the entire video and seeing the mistake I was like, “eh, it’ll make the viewers go “hey wait a sec” or something”.
I love that idea for a fix! No absurd time limits to jump scare and make you question what the heck you just played. Sounds great
