I was scared of playing the master pieces as a kid. I was told that the timer is all the time you get to play the games, ever. I avoided the masterpieces since I didn't want to waste my one chance to play the games. It wasn't until this video that I learned that they were replayable...
Oh my goodness that is the greatest story I’ve ever hear haha. I think if they gave us only one chance to play 30 seconds of Donkey Kong I’d go insane
I have a very specific memory about Masterpieces. One day I just started playing the Kirby’s Adventure masterpiece over and over and trying to get as far as I could before it timed me out. I also ate a ton of Wild Grape Pop Tarts, which I don’t even like that much? It’s a strangely vivid, hyper-nostalgic memory, yet I wouldn’t say that it had much influence on me. I did eventually play Kirby’s Epic Yarn and I enjoyed it, but Brawl’s core gameplay was more responsible for that; haven’t played a Kirby game since.
LOL the grape pop tart part got me. I get the feeling though. Sometimes those memories that have no business sticking out just do, but they're often among the best
I didn't even know they made grape pop tarts
Wtf is a grape pop tart
huh. now that i read it, brawl’s subspace is essentially a kirby game but with nintendo (and a sega) characters
kirby's adventure to speedrun his adventure and get grape pop tarts
The reason you think “you can’t bake your cake and eat it too” is a dumb saying is because that’s not the saying. It’s “you can’t HAVE it and eat it too.” Cuz once you eat it you don’t have it anymore, it’s gone because you ate it. Changing eat to bake makes it meaningless
Tbh, I think all this mode was trying to do was contextualize the early history of these characters. Show younger players what the older games looked, sounded and played like, but only in snippets, just long enough to give that context. They weren't trying to do real demos. I think the Masterpieces mode was fine. It was more of a mini-museum than a sample
I would agree to some extent, at the end of the day, it was mostly to boost sales for the virtual console. That's why Earthbound wasn't included in the western release, as we never got it until the Wii U
@@Tornado_Mang to be fair, weren't there legal issues with Earthbound because of its music, which is why the eventual Virtual Console release took so long and cost extra? Could have been a factor why that game wasn't in the international release as well.
How wrong you are, they was to try and get you to buy the $10-20 full version on the store lol
What they should have done to make it actually GOOD EFFORT was allow you to beat ONE LEVEL of each...yes, that's a PROPER DEMO! One level of Mario, reach the first dungeon in the overworld of Zelda 1 and 2 (because the dungeon would be too much for a demo), complete one race in F-Zero, etc. I know it's hard to code in, but that is why they should have put more time and thinking, and understand how good demoes work. This gives players enough time to enjoy the games without feeling cheated of time! They can take their time to enjoy, and they can finish something to feel accomplished more!
Those wouldn't have been hard to code at all
Well you can beat oot within the time limit.
Let SMB1 be 2 levels, we're already really close to that.
I think that for smb1 it should be at least a world since if you are quick enough you can beat the first level
You can do all of those in the time provided, someone even beat ocarina of time in the time provided by the demo
If it wasn't for my cousin showing me the OoT Masterpiece when I was 12, I wouldn't have grown to love the franchise as much as I do now. Didn't know a damn thing about LoZ until I was playing around on the Ocarina. That shit blew my mind!!!. First Zelda game I owned was A Link to the Past/Four Swords on GBA for my 13th birthday!
The Masterpieces weren't totally dookie.
The OoT demo is pretty dang cool I gotta admit. Easily my favorite demo when I was younger. Glad to see the mode do some good haha
@@MattTrashBoat Oh yeah! Ironically enough, I DID have a modded Wii at the time too (but someone stole my SD card) as well as my gamecube with the og Action Replay that came with its own memory card for adding codes onto.
This video just reminded me how many hours I spent inputting line after line of code. Took me like an hour or so to diddle the Kokiri Rock Boy into an Arwing. First played and completed Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask through the Collector's Edition.
This video really put all that into perspective. So many funny stories I can share again. Thanks for this kicksss video. You definitely earned a new subscriber.
same, but with earthbound & 4's masterpeices.
Fun Fact: The Japanese verison of Brawl's Masterpeices has Earthbound as an exclusive game.
In facts in the only way to play Earthbound on thr wii since it never saw a real re-release on Wii Virtual Console.
Demos are pretty harmless.
The timer is too short to be enjoyable, but this is the kind of thing you look at once then not again.
It's not a broken addition or one that makes me question why they'd dare include it.
Just a little tab for some promo for like Wii eShop at the time.
Exactly! I think it’s fun to take a deeper look into aspects about a piece of media that others only take a quick glance at. Sometimes you’ll find a bunch of stuff to talk about by doing so.
TrashBoat: "Aw yeah Ice Climber! I love this ga-!"
Brawl: "Your free trial of fun has ended."
Oh man, I still remember buying a classic controller ONLY so I could try the masterpieces... and I got exposed to legendary games like starfox 64 and ocarina of time, so I'd say it was a good purchase.
Funny enough it did also subject me to super metroid, but I never knew it would become one of my favorite games ever waaaaay later lol
Nice to know it did some good! Also, sorry but buying a controller just to play the short demos is pretty funny to me haha.
@@MattTrashBoat well I was also the kid who bought Mario Galaxy bc he couldn't unlock rosalina in Mario kart lol
@@drrichardew7878 What, I don't remember her being any trouble... wasn't she available from the start? Lemme google something real quick: "Rosalina can be unlocked by having a save file of Super Mario Galaxy; have 4,950 races; or having at least one star on all the Mirror Mode cups." ...oh. Well there's your problem, Mario Galaxy is one of the best games ever made, surpassed only by Mario Galaxy 2, and Mario Odyssey, and a dozen other Mario titles... the point is you should have owned it already.
Literally the one memory I have of Brawl was playing Earthbound and not knowing where to go

I feel like Masterpieces is good idea with flawed execution. It's blatant advertising but if it was implied in a less limiting way, we could've had a memorable distraction. Part of me actually wanted them to return for Ultimate, hoping that perhaps it could be the best its ever been.
I personally feel like them being the way they aren't wasn't Sakurai's call as his clearly has a love for retro games. Who knows what we could've gotten if Nintendo didn't try to make these VC ads. Anyways, this video was a good watch, keep it up man.
Yeah like Cloud being announced as DLC back the same year FFVII Remake was announced and Sephiroth being announced as DLC back the same year said Remake was released wasn't blatant advertising... Heck Snake in Brawl im pretty sure a trophy literally tells you to buy MGS4: Guns of the Patriots, out later this year.
The time limits had to be included so people would buy the games on the Virtual Console. If they had the full games playable, then there would be no point for the player to buy them.
The problem is that the time limits are too little to even form an opinion on the games.
Plus, couldn’t they just let you play a tiny segment of the game instead?
So? Smash ultimate is a $60 game. God forbid Nintendo bundles in a few of their old ass games into it as a bonus lol
bro we get a minute to play mario.
@@JSRFModCentral nowadays compared to PS5 games Triple-A, and such $60 is considered "cheap."
It wouldn't make much sense to put in a bunch of retro games in, as those might distract some players from playing SSB itself.
Probably why Animal Crossing no longer has playable NES games.
Hey man! I love your content! This is my first video, and I am already hooked! I can tell you are going to go places! It may be a month, it may be a year, but i can tell you will gain the recognition you deserve! Can''t wait to see more from you! :)
Thanks! While I'm not specifically making content to be recognized per se I do hope I'll get a bit more viewers one day haha. BUT I gotta make sure I have content worth watching ya know
I think there was some kind of shift in the company mindset that occurred between Animal Crossing and the Wii Era. I remember Reggie had to fight INSANELY hard to get them to include Wii Sports with the Wii because they more or less “didn’t want to have developers work hard on a game and then disrespect those developers by giving away their game for free.”
Of course, the masterpieces are the way they are so you feel like you have to actually buy them on the virtual console, but that “no games for free” mindset probably played a role too.
If I’m remembering it right, Retro also wanted to include Super Metroid in with Prime as a completion bonus, but Nintendo axed it.
I recall these having the most horrible input lag on the Wii U version.
Also Zelda II is probably there because Link lifts a few moves from his Zelda II self in Smash.
Great video! I the first time I discovered this mode on brawl back in the day. Spend a couple hours on it but that was nothing like that coin launcher mode, I spend a whole day playing that lol. You have earned my sub, I can’t wait to watch more of your videos!
Coin launcher mode is actually so addicting! Also thanks for the sub :)
@@MattTrashBoat no problem! Thank you for making this great video
tbh Masterpieces doesn’t even feel like a true game mode. there’s no need to include a retro game collection if those games only last for a few minutes
it’s definitely a good thing they scrapped it from Ultimate now that i think about it
I liked the masterpiece mode, if for nothing else, than because of earthbound. Yeah, the 5 minute demo doesn’t even give you enough time to get to the first battle. But it’s that demo that put earthbound on my radar at all.
It is indeed lame, because they're only weak Wii or Wii U Virtual Console versions under mixed saved files/moments and very limited gameplay. Plus, they really could've picked better games, and some they put in aren't even real masterpiece titles. They're pointless, especially if you own the actual physical release classic games.
Funny video, though!
Balloon Fight will always be a masterpiece to me.
Im glad this video was recommended, cause it just showed me a goldmine of a channel 🥺
Keep up the great work!
I forgot about this mode until i saw somebody beat Oot in it 💀
This video is phenomenal - this feels a lot higher quality than the views may suggest, I hope the algorithm picks you up :)
I remember not being able to figure out any controls for these games😂
Looked at the subscribe box and saw “301 subscribers” and thought I was seeing things lmao. Keep up videos like this and you’ll take off in no time I’m sure of it
13:53 Now that I think about it, they probably made you choose peach because she’s the slowest character. You’d get farther in the game with a faster character, but peach ensures even your fastest gameplay won’t get you far.
That’s a good theory 🧐 honestly I do kinda like how they “make you” play as Peach since you unlock the game through using Peach (in smash itself lol)
@@MattTrashBoat fair. You could also argue they make you play as her because it was the first game they *let* you play as her, so there is some history to back up the decision.
CZcams recommended another gem to me. Good job, good sir. Hope your channel grows
Your kind words means a ton. I’ll try and work to earn that growth 😈

Well it def did something for this video haha I am shocked! Thanks though I appreciate ya :D
A new TrashBoat video on a Friday night is just what I needed. I love your content, man!

The Masterpieces are waste of time. I remember in Gameking53's review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl where he criticized them for being a waste of time and that there's no fun you can have with them before the limit runs out. He'd change it by removing it in favor of more Melee stages and even stages from the first game.
Great video! You're really underrated.
Dude this is so well edited. And the commentary sounds great. Keep it up!
This video is actually really really good and I want to say that I want the all mighty algorithm to give it a chance!

Good video but I just want to make a comment on how weak the delivery was on the "the joke is misogyny" segment. I don't even understand the punchline either but that delivery with the cartoon sound effects was just confusing. Otherwise this is insanely well done and I can't wait for more documentary - Scott the woz like videos that I wish I saw done more by other people.
Fair enough! I'll be honest I just kinda wanted to do the sped up dance meme thing, so that caption was kind of an afterthought. A bit of an anti-joke if you will. Thanks though! I was surprised to see you only have around 125-150 subs when I watched this video, as I had thought the quality of this video to be of that of a person with at least 2k subs.

The time still needs to be extended, though. Seriously!? Only 30 seconds!?

Brawl's masterpieces were OK, but I remember the loading screens made it not worth it. Specially with demos that lasted less than a minute.
Honestly I forgot Masterpieces was a mode lol. Great vid!!
I did too before I started to replay Brawl earlier this year haha. Then it all came back to me. Also thanks! :)
Unpopular opinion: I prefer Super Smash Bros 4 over brawl, not because the masterpieces have improved and look a lot better. It's mainly because the characters are more colorful in HD and I love Mario's model in that game and the characters are a lot more stronger than brawl.
You're welcome to disagree with me if you want to.
How do you not have more subscribers that video was awesome!
"get off the internet you eight year old"
I feel personally attacked since I never had the chance to get the game nor even had control if I could get the game or not
As a kid, my friend convinced me not to play Metroid Prime 3 because it was "too scary and mature" (he's like 6 months older than me), and because of that I was afraid to play any Metroid game. It wasn't until trying the Masterpiece demo that I realized how good Super Metroid, and by extension, the series really was and they ended up becoming some of my favorites.
I remember playing oot and just running around talking to people while forgetting about the timer
I thought I was watching some alpharad retrospective video, good job man
That mega man masterpiece part was the funniest joke in the whole video holy shit
This ain't Smash Tour
You know what….. fair enough. I can’t think of many bad smash “modes” besides like smash tour but that had it’s own fun of just playing it with friends and making fun of how bad that was. Masterpieces are kinda boring
I wish they put smash run in smash Brothers ultimate now is a really great game mode
The time limit on Masterpieces was asinine. But as a kid that didn't know what emulation was, this was the coolest shit ever.
2:22 Finally, someone acknowledges it. Words like 'masterpiece' and 'peak' are over used.
Very well made video. I'm very surprised you have only 96 subs
96 subs on youtube is cool, but imagine if I had 96 subs from subway. Now THAT would be awesome! thanks btw :D
I was convinced that masterpieces was a weird dream i had as a kid
LOL if only
I dont rly have strong memories attached to the materpieces although i know ive played them. I feel like there's better ways of documenting a character's original essence or w/e because these dont rly seem to be vertical slices, theyre just throwing the player at the beginning and kicking them out 5 steps past the beginning
Great video though! I enjoy the humor, editing and information. I'll look into your earlier videos
My earlier videos aren’t that good but thanks anyways!
Wait a moment, how the fudge do you only have 620 subscribers?!???? (Recently subscribed to your content, keep it up)
Haha well 2 months ago I had like 70! So who knows give it a bit more time 😈
My vote goes to EarthBound, those 5 minutes of Cutscene made me think the game was bad, how could they
Had Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received Masterpieces for the final update, here's a list of what I think could've been included:
1. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
2. The Legend of Zelda (NES)
3. Metroid (NES)
4. Kid Icarus (NES)
5. Mega Man 2 (NES)
6. Dr. Mario (NES)
7. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (NES)
8. Kirby's Adventure (NES)
9. Pac-Man (NES)
10. Pilotwings (SNES)
11. F-Zero (SNES)
12. Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis)
13. Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
14. Star Fox (SNES)
15. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
16. Earthbound (SNES)
17. Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition (Genesis)
18. Fatal Fury Special (SNES)
19. Banjo-Kazooie (N64)
20. Super Smash Bros. (N64)
smash bros in smash bros?
@@nehuensio On Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, there's unused data for a Smash 64 masterpiece demo. All that remains of it is a placeholder logo, because N64 emulation wasn't possible on Wii U at the time.
I used to play brawl a lot, i really need to get back to replay stages in subspace though
Brawl masterpieces is the inly way ive ever played the first legend of zelda and i feel like as a kid i feel like only managed to make as much progress in that time limit as i would have if i owned the full game back then (absolutely no progress past the first cave where you get the sword)
I almost wonder if Masterpieces could come back in a sort of Nintendo World Championships-style mode that adds a more competitive aspect and recontextualises the games a bit. The whole 'see how far you can get aspect' could be actually gamified and you'd still get a decent view into what each game is like. Even something like Earthbound could put you in the middle of a decently hard boss and challenge you to beat it within the time limit to give you a solid grasp on the battle mechanics. The main takeaway would be that even if these games are far older and shorter than your average game nowadays, there's still a lot of fun to be had with them if you take the chance to play them inside and out.
Here’s a fun fact that people didn’t notice, in the Super Smash Bros Wii U masterpiece the original Super Smash Bros for the N64 was suppose to be add in it and that would be the only N64 masterpiece in it but later it was scrapped due to the release of Super Smash Bros Wii U, N64 Emulation wasn’t possible on the Wii U (all this in Wiki)
Wonder if someone ever did a glitched run of Mario 64 on the Masterpieces mode
Mario 64 sadly was never included :( BUT I realllly wish it was because I would assume they'd drop you off inside the castle to run around for a few mins (prob 3-4 at most) which actually wouldn't be quite enough time to beat the game with boundary breaking, but still would be fun regardless
@@MattTrashBoat Really? I thought it was due to Ocarina of Time being in there. My bad
I remember pulling a literal all nighter trying to beat taboo on high dificulty for a place i used to work at...think an after school program
I suppose making the masterpieces "unlimited" time without saves is like playing reproduction carts with non functioning save batteries ha (excluding the external save storage solutions).
As someone who hasn't played Brawl, I can safely say that I 😭
It’s okay my friend, you’ll get your chance to play it during recess one of these days 😔
Awesome video!
I think its funny that of all the masterpieces, the longest game (as far as I know) to be one of them, OOT, is the only one where the credits can be reached in the time limit.
Brawl was my introduction to SSB, and videos like these really highlight how underrated Brawl is nowadays. Still sucks that ''Masterpieces'' has just demos instead of the full games though. I recently watched a video in which someone did something complicated with Brawl's code and found that of all these older games within Brawl, are actually fully playable, but that Nintendo put an artificial time limit on them.
It's not even complicated with the code, IIRC it's one line of Gecko code to disable the time limit. Been a thing since at least 2010.
Yet speedrunners still managed to beat OOT within the time limit
That still blows my mind honestly. One of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen
They should’ve put the time they put into masterpieces into making brawl’s trash gameplay better.
Brawl wasn't the best, but it had a better story than Ultimate

40:51 I knew the year that Kirby's Dreamland 3 came out because I actually played it back then when it was brand new. What I find to be a much bigger surprise is that Kirby's Adventure came out for the NES 2 years into the SNES being out internationally and three years into its original Japanese console version the Super famicom. I mean only a year after Kirby's Adventure came out was the Japanese release of the PS1 and the Sega Saturn.
It seemed back then Kirby had a knack to come out for consoles late in their lifespan or even consoles of the current generations predecessors. I mean even Kirby 64 in the crystal shards came out in 2000 and by then the Sega Dreamcast was in America for a year and the Gamecube was only coming out a year after Kirby 64.

0:14 LMAO the sfx makes it hilarious
8:34 the first sonic Foces has a very small protion of gameplay, it is literally a jump area, a set piece and introduction to the more wide area of the stage and it ends while the player moves, it is almost only the tutorial area of the game.
MHHH I shall look into this
when you realize the only reason Masterpieces isn't in Ultimate as well is because the eshop on the Switch doesn't offer classic titles for them to sell you

The most annoying part is that you need a certain controller to Play some of the game that was annoying
Brawl is my favorite smash game, and the game I played the most was a bit of Kirby, and a lot of Zelda 1 but never beat it
I don't see Masterpieces as trying to do the same thing as trophies did, but rather I see them as supplementing the trophies. Sakurai has in his channel mentioned how in his UIs (as of Meteos, I believe) he tries to make the icon for the games bigger or smaller based on the importance of the mode in question to the game. With this context in mind, you will find that Smash 4 has Trophies noticeably bigger an icon than Masterpieces does. This implies you're supposed to check the trophies first and get the context for the game or characters or whatnot that you want. Then once you do, maybe you're curious what their games are about, so you back out of trophies and see the masterpieces, going in to play a demo with that context in mind to understand the character and by extension their game better.
Of course that came with its fair share of problems but honestly I think it was fine for what it was. Yeah it was an advertisement of course, I knew that going in even back in the Brawl days, but that doesn't mean that's all it can and ever will be.
The Masterpieces mode in Smash 4 specifically was where I first played EarthBound, which is now my all time favourite game. What sucks about the trial for that game though is that you don’t even get to fight any enemies with the amount of time allotted.
holy moly keep up the good work bro!!!!!! :
