Being neurodivergent, I read Keiko that way and found a lot about the book relatable (fortunately, I've never bludgeoned anybody, though! 😹). I really appreciated how the conclusion played out, as well. I'm hoping to check out more of her work at some point!

Sayaka Murata is a simply incredible writer. I really like how all the questions you have about Keiko, you have those questions about the world she lives in and you wonder is that despite of her rebellion or because of it.
    Excellent review, nice intro.

Best review I’ve heard of: “In a time that proclaims diversity is valued, this book puts up its middle finger, points to reality and says ‘don’t you lie to me’”
I joined a Japanese book club on a whim for this, wanting to get in reading practice, but I ended up blasting through it ahead of schedule in a way I haven’t for any book in years. I’d thought after hs I wasn’t that into fiction but this book might’ve changed my mind.
I’m neurodivergent (ADHD) and I could relate to a lot in this book. I’ve felt like I’ve had safe spaces that I was a part of transformed and “taken away from me” from other people in it who didn’t appreciate it like I did. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this exact thing be described before this book.
Anyways, I appreciate your review and how you went through the themes! I hope to see more media that focuses on NDs’ perspectives.
