I just wanted to say THANK YOU for doing such hard and often delicate work! I've helped with adding and translating subtitles for youtubers before and it's much harder than it seems. You don't only translate the words themselves but you need to translate the emotional impact, the flourishes, the everything that entails that piece of art, whether that be a book or video or whatever. And don't even get me started on untranslatable idioms. Horrible. So thank you once again!

I loved Convenience Store Woman, too. I am autistic and Keiko is "autistic-coded". Basically, I take the book as a big metaphor for how society will be able to notice you as Other no matter what you do or how hard you try to personality-mirror, and they will take advantage of you because of it. Keiko was highly qualified to be the manager, as is seen in every page and especially when she enters the other store at the end, and the book hinted twice at the fact that she asked for a salary in the past. "the manager made me realize my wages were designed to cover the cost of getting my body fit for work" or something like that, and this is repeated verbatim twice almost as if Keiko is parroting it back in her head to convince herself again. I think this means that Keiko asked for a raise (beyond deserved) at about the two year mark of working there and was denied. She took it is a definitive answer and did not try after that. This echoes her shutting down behavior after being denied and criticized for her behavior as a child. As an autistic person who has worked in food service jobs for over ten years (student now), a lot of this rang heartbreakingly true to me. You do the job so well, and its sense memories soak into your bones and your body and brain even when you aren't working, and you are still denied from growth within the company. I think the awful character of Shiraha was meant to show how little Keiko thought she deserved after being shocked to learn her behavior as a child wasn't appreciated and since she NEVER got the help she deserved, she shut down without further assistance and was in a long state of dissociation, a numb state of bliss in her little world of appointed importance of the store and her role in it. I think Shiraha is also meant to be a laughable extreme of shunning society, while Keiko is obviously embracing it with not enough authority questioning- the contrast feels very purposeful to me. This book made me a little annoyed because it showed a very stereotypical view of deadpan, robotic autism, and didn't show any of the complexities of autistic life. What were her hobbies? She really didn't care about the taste of food? This is really stereotypical and the perpetuation is harmful, but as I think the novel served as a metaphor that does shine a light on important things, I can let that slide a bit. Just to let you know- I am autistic and I am hyper-empathetic, have hobbies that fill me with joy, and squeal over seeing ducks in the park and love flavor in food. There are very colorful autistic people out there- we exist!!!

This is something I used to struggle with but I find it’s easier now by reading a shorter book alongside the long one for when I feel overwhelmed, which helps me not to fall into a reading slump. I actually read 'Convenience Store Woman' after you added it to your tbr list... cause it sounded like a weird fun book but it really did explore a ton of deeper themes... I like how the ending is left to imagination.. She's back in the store and she realises her part in the weird existence and she still has the alliance thing with the guy but it's a little wobbly... So I expect it to end in an imaginary future of the book..
One of the most ironic moments in the book was when the guy's sister-in-law calls the woman and says that her brother in law is greedy for money constantly and she's simultaneously threatening to sue him for said money...
The part where the main character's sister snaps at her and asks her why she cant be normal is a close second... It really elevates the tension in the plot and just puts into prespective how the society deems certain things 'normal' and anyone who doesnt fit in is automatically abnormal
Really enjoyed it... Probably gonna read more of japanese literature now

I liked “Before The Coffe Gets Cold” a lot, but I think that there are a few contradictions in how the time travelling works in the book. I don’t know if it’s a matter of translation, cause I read the italian version, but at a certain point I started overthinking it, asking myself things like why the characters didn’t meet their past selves when they went back in time, or like why they could bring objects from the past even if the rules said they couldn’t change the present. Then when they start travelling to the future it gets even more confusing. Btw I loved the writing and the stories are engaging, heartwarming and delicate, so maybe it was the author’s choice to focus more on the introspection of the protagonists rather than on being coherent with the “”science”” behind the book. Just wanted to share my opinion, I love your videos and I’m definitely gonna get Conveniece Store Woman.

My main issue was the fact that the first woman got so little time compared to the other three. It's probably just because her reason for going back was a lot more trivial and she was just meant to introduce the premise but it's so jarring how much time the other three get in comparison
