That, I think, is the redemptive feature of social media. The information gave us the opportunity to have expansive intellectual discussion, similar to the revolution sparked by Gutenberg’s printing press. Instead, tragically, we wasted the opportunity by producing a culture of sensationalism, thrills, and ten-word sound bites.

I'm creating Brown Academia. It's a lower to middle class aesthetic. For those Auto-didactic learners that never could afford college. Focusing on frugal living, The modern philosophy of minimalism is perfect. Academic focus would be Philosophy, history, science, etc. Also learning light home repair along with gardening, and cooking, and the like. The mindset is more Logic and reason based, Realistic philosophies such as Epicurus, Schopenhauer, Camus etc. Working an honest hard day is not shameful, and neither is saving 20% of your income every week for your retirement. But since you are more curious and learned then the average Joe you enjoy some different things. Such as a nice waistcoat and a flat cap. Mixing blue jeans with a dress shirt and waistcoat would not seem unusual on a night out. A cup of tea and a hearty homemade stew would hit the spot. I kind of think of Hobbits.

If you read by candlelight, I think it helps to use several candles, have them sitting at a good angle to light the page (a foot from one side of your head is a good position), and try to have something white (or a mirror) behind the candles to bounce more light. Also, if you use a candle to light your way when walking, don't hold the candle in front of you like they do in the movies, because the glare will blind you.

Typewriters work by stamping on an ink soaked ribbon so if the ribbon is too old then it dries out, hence: you having to press each letter 3 times. If you open up the typewriter and take the ribbon out, on the spool it should say the ribbon measurements and you can just order a replacement online :)

I used to use a typewriter when I was a kid because my mother had an old one. If you're going to do that, you need to have some Wite-Out or similar correction fluid on hand because that's the way to deal with mistakes if you don't want to completely retype the page. Just put a little on the place where you typed a wrong letter (you don't need much, don't overdo it), blow on it to dry it faster, and when it's dry, type the right letter on that space. You use the backspace key to back up one space at a time to get the paper in the right position to type on the space you want. "Backspace" literally means that it takes you backward one space.

Some ideas you were remiss of: 1) jazz music, 2) drug use, 3) global cultures study/influence & travel, 4) Berlitz language learning on vinyl records, & 5) learning how to dance from vinyl records. These are just a few of course. What an inspiration you are. T/Y. 📚

Idk if you need this but calligraphy is easy - you are just moving the pen wrong. If you want lines to be thick, you press the pen to the paper and go down, letting the pen tip split and release more ink. If you want thin lines, you go up, lifting off the pressure. To make it pretty and consistent, when you write and go down, the line should be thick, if you move up, you make the line thin.
Trust me, it’s a really fun skill to have, give it another shot (or watch a tutorial).

Aisling god, that is a downside. my mom once spilled my entire bottle of ink onto our very light wooden floors - spent a couple of days trying to get it off with nail polish remover. these days i prefer brush pens - way less messy 😆

Dumb question, but is it worth trying to learn calligraphy if you’re left handed? I struggle with normal ballpoint pens because as a leftie I do more pushing than pulling if that makes sense (because I write from left to right with my left hand) and I’m worried that would translate to struggling with calligraphy.

Tumblr has seen some uprise in poc dark academia so I suggest looking around and seeing if you can find something that calls to you. I've been coming across a lot of wonderful non West European aesthetic as well as book recommendations from various cultures. And I think black academia is what is what they've decided it call it, so yeah, when you feel like it give it a try 😊

As a real scientist and academic, when I see the "Dark Academia" things I feel this really weird feeling of alienation.
For a real academic, the pay is low and we are always overworked. There is rarely time and money for expensive fashions.
The real academic fashion is jeans and a t-shirt. Or as I actually live now in Taiwan which is a really hot country, I might even go with sweatpants.
