Welcome to the CodeX Cantina! Join us, Una and Krypto, in our mission to get more people to talk about books! We hope to encourage others to read and share their thoughts. We don't view our take as authoritative and we encourage discourse. While we have a background in literature, we push arguments and the text over places of authority. Everyone's opinion is equally valid here. One of us is actively teaching, so we go by our digital names. We would remind everyone that these are live conversations. Please only source our opinions and make sure to fact-check and find original sources for anything we talk about. Citations of our views can be quoted as an organization:

I think it's a story about overcoming fear (paralysis) through the loss of innocense
Amazing contentttt makes me enjoy literature
I've fallen out of love with Hemingway over the years, but he is truly a master of saying so much by saying so little. This is a 10/10 for me. And for the record, as a former restaurant worker/waiter/cook/manager, I absolutely loathed people who came in right at closing time. So inconsiderate! 😡😠🤬
Kafka makes commentary on so many topics and levels through this story. Glad I saved this video in my watch later list and finally made time to read this story. Great analysis and bring MusiqueMacabre back soon!
Krypto's analysis seems based on his idea that Jimmy is a little 'behind' the other young men in his understanding of upper class life, and that he even helped at the butcher's shop. In the story he is a little bit a fop who, "did not study very earnestly and took to bad courses," dresses the part, and wastes his father's money -- more due to drunkenness and peer pressure than bad habits. Jimmy may rank lower due to his father's background and his Irishness, but he's not so grounded. I think it's interesting that we have the paragraph about Jimmy's general carefulness and respect for his father's money. I also think it's interesting his father approves of him occasionally wasting it and of the social circle he wastes it in. In classic _Dubliners_ fashion, we're kept from the conclusion of these things changing, or any word on if they do.
Thanks!
Thank you!
Many thanks! Been reading along (Pevear/Volokhonsky) then watching your discussions. Still haven't read part 3 or the "missing chapter." I know it's impossible to talk about everything but I do wish you would have mentioned the visit to Semyon Yakovelich, the holy fool. (Chapter 5-II Before the Fête) This section was laugh-out-loud funny but also included subtle commentary on diversion, religion, society, our reaction to tragedy, and some curious actions by Liza. Yet, I felt the chapter was so out of place in setting (and style?) that I wonder what I'm missing.
Thanks. Fully understand and I had notes for that section too. Maybe we’ll return to it some day
I love hearing both of your insights into my favorite short story writer's works. If you are looking for other Akutagawa stories in the future put "The Life Of A Stupid Man" on the list. The story's structure is a bit different from his usual work and I'd be super excited to hear both of your thoughts on it. Keep up the great analysis!

Hi Guys, I didn't read this story, and I generally don't like Roald Dahl stories (too dark with children"s lives), but I liked your discussion. 🪴 Cindy
I'm really interested in reading this story now ! Dealing with our own mortality is such a scary thing as we get older. It helps to have friends and family to urge us to go on with our daily lives even if we're facing an illness, or just aging in general. We all need HOPE. We all hope when we leave this life, it's for a better life..I hate the saying..."live each day as if it's your last." Because how can we truly do that ? We have jobs, and responsibilities that get in the way of living our lives to the utmost. We do the best we can. That's all we can do. I hate skulls, but you asked for a skull if we watched the entire video,so here it is.💀 Thanks for this review. Cindy 🌻
I find living life like it’s your last day is generally great advice!
@@TheCodeXCantina Good advice,but unrealistic,is all I'm saying.
I just finished part one today, Ive been looking forward to watch your summary of part one for a while. And its great.
⛏️
Early on in the book I associated the name 'Raskolnikov' with the word 'Rascal'. Which is defined as 'a mischievous or cheeky person, especially a child or man (typically used in an affectionate way).' Which in a way I think is partially fitting as even though Raskolnikov is a murderer and an unpleasant dude overall, we still feels some affection towards him as the reader like some of the other characters do. (I am aware though that in the Russian language this is not applicable. That is, 'Raskolnikov' is more closely associated with the Russian word for 'schismatic' or 'divided'.
Thank you so much for this video! Helped me a lot to understand it, also great analysis. At first I didn't like the book, I believe it's badly written but I must say you have changed my mind (Maybe I just needed to understand it)
What’s the POV of this story: is it third person omniscient
Really helpful video… but i have a confusion about the POV of the story: i think it’s second person right
Tessie’s mistake was taking the lump sum instead of the 30 year annuity.
I think that your "cog in the machine" argument is a little flawed since we are seeing it with modern eyes. I highly doubt tha contemporaries saw a monotonous urban life the same way we see "corporate jobs" now. Maybe they were complaining about the explotation going on in blue collar jobs (hence Karl Marx and comunism) but not boredom. Maybe H.M. was trying to write a satyre about a man who just refuses to do anything (to the point of starving himself to death), and the human need to know the reason, even if there are none, behind the world that surrounds us.
" I consider myself a VERY intelligent perspn.." WJOA. i NEVER have heard anybody ever say that. !!!...but...ALL is forgiven....LOL. !!
How can we analyse this short story by applying theoretical frame work???
Hi Guys, I always believed the old man had a cataract in his eye which caused the "Filmy" look. The narrator was "Grossed out " by the appearance of the eye. 👁
Oh, I could discuss this at length. I agree on some points, but let me give you guys a couple of corrections: It is mentioned a couple of times that the bird flies in, and near the end, one of you says it flies away. Wrong. "Open here I flung the shutter, when with many a flirt and flutter, in there stepped a stately raven..." And at the end, the raven "still is sitting, still is sitting..." You mention that the narrator is trying to get to sleep, or is getting ready for bed. Not quite. He is trying to bury his mind in obscure literature to escape the pain of dwelling on his loss. My inference is that if he just went to bed, his mind would be so occupied with her that he would not be able to sleep.
Thanks. I don't remember the Raven leaving either. Did one of us mention that in the context of this being cyclical for the narrator part of the discussion?
@@TheCodeXCantina 11:18
@@andrewvelonis5940 Correct, we were talking about this being a repeating experience. Sorry for the confusion. Cheers.
Thank you i understand the 90% of the book by your video. And i am sad why i didn't get it on time while i was reading. At the same time i am a nonspeaker of English and i did understand the words by the dictionary but the symbolism the book held was not the thing i got. I am a sort of sad. I want to understand all of Faulkner novels
Can I send you a private message related to this story? Please 😅
🦎 🐶 🧥
The slave rebellion that is described in Chapter 7 could not have happened as there was no longer Slavery in Haiti. In the novel the rebellion occurs in the 1820's. Slavery had already been abolished after the Slavery rebellion in 1800 Is this an error on Faulkners part or did he do it on purpose?
I’m just done reading in English version . I like how your analysis yozo .. background influences his life choices.. in modern society human connections .. mental illness 😅
I think at the time, "convent" may have been referring to the convent school girls would go to. Remember that boys and girls would have been separated under the Catholic education system. Mengan's sister is also wearing the brown uniform that you would associate with convent schools.
Yep.
I once read an analysis/theory that both characters are not separate characters but, in fact, represent the narrator’s split personalities. The story is far more psychological than people think. Poe struggled mightily with alcoholism, wavering between sobriety and drunkenness, and the theory is that the character being murdered in the story is actually the narrator conquering his own “alcoholic/destructive persona.” That’s why the narrator has no remorse 50 years later. He’s not a psychopath but actually a hero who conquered his inner demons-alcoholism.
I Love the little puns y'all made. Neatly explained. I'm gonna follow you for guidances❤
For me Julian is the worst character in the story and is every single liberal who wants to do and be seen to do the progressive thing for the wrong reason, as you say. Every line in this story is excruciating, I think it's a masterpiece.
21:45 great point, the painter saw how much a father would sacrifice while he himself had no purpose to self-sacrifice. he decided to stop being selfish to ease the possible desperation of a parent-to-be, especially since he'd been contemplating it for awhile anyway. 23:40 exactly
11:00 the pruning metaphor has nothing to do with "strength", as you seem fixated on for some reason. it's merely maintaining a steady number of branches, think bonsai.
subbed to your channel within the first minute of this video, jsyk.
I have 2 think 🤔 that Delia's Silence was 2 bare all that she could bare didn't mean she was defeated but had gained her mental strength 2 continue in the relationship

Please can you explain the short story The Magic Shop by H G will
every time you say: "you know..." it is clear that you do not know anything. and at the same time, putting your counterpart on the spot, who clearly does not know either... cringefest galore
interesting,thanks
Only recently read this short story and I enjoyed your breakdown very much...all of them. One point I noticed...there is no mention of a rose in the story, only rose-shaded curtains and the rose-colored light in the room. If I missed it, tell me! Thanks!
I'm listening now to your discussion of the final chapter of Go Down, Moses and, regarding your suggestion that Faulkner is confused about the story of Joseph, that is incorrect. The story of Joseph goes on, after his being sold into slavery in Egypt, for several chapters in Genesis. For Faulkner's purposes, have a look at Genesis chs. 42-45.
His wife stayed with him because she gets pregnant. She thought there are worse husbands. Two other men disappeared after he fall. He used to pay for so called friends in pubs. He changed religion for marrying her. He kept saying just nothing. Society pushes the man into filth, cutting his tongue off. He is not alcoholic he is a lone person trying to please friends, that is why he goes to church. Mr Power rid of low class friends but not him because he has a character (?) A paralleled type of middle aged man with a few fight left in him for his opinion. The wife thinks he is too old to change his religious ways, as if his persona being chopped off and trimmed by the society. - I am so lost in this story as if James pushed my face down to filth and kept me there.
