For everyone saying the factory isn't in America, it actually IS American, believe it or not. The movie goes to great lengths to try and make the location ambiguous (nonsense monetary symbols, ambiguous coins, a German shoot location but everyone speaking English) but the television coverage of the Golden Ticket search we see Charlie watching always references "here in America." And in the book, he finds a "dollar" in the gutter. So signs point heavily to Wonka's being an American company.

Fun fact: the children that were actors in the movie weren’t allowed to see the factory until they started filming so them running around all excited is their genuine reaction
Was Gloop's genuine reaction to fall into the chocolate river? (jk)
@@jeremyzapsmash 👀👀👀👀👀
Really? Huh
So Agustus gloops first reaction was to ham on everything there and then fall in the river and get stuck in the pipe
@@laurenbowen5901 Np that was just the script
The fact that the nightmare fuel boat ride is the safest thing in the entire factory tour is unbelievable
huh
Wouldn’t be fun if you have a seizure
Bruh.
To do it so badly that, indeed, the most traumatizing part is the safest, go figure 🤣
Yeah, that should be saying something
Oh yeah, and also fun fact, when Wonka was singing during the boat ride, he didn't blink once and that wasn't part of the script so the other actors were actually scared and thought he was a real psycho . So that was there real reaction.
Augustus in the book actually HAD A COLD IN THAT SCENE!! Quote from his parents in the book: “Maybe we shouldn’t bring Augustus. Maybe he’s too ill!” Extra fine there! And it’s also said in the modern “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp!
Not bad MatPat. Not bad. But let me try one better. Willy Wonka was willing to risk the OSHA violations because the contest winners never actually saw the real factory. What they saw was a series of carefully crafted rooms designed to test the real winner of the golden ticket contest. Why? To find his true successor. Who? Charlie Bucket. That's right! Charlie was the first choice all along. But Wonka had to test him.
First piece of evidence that we see that the factory Wonka showed off wasn't the real factory was right in the opening credits. Remember the credits rolling over a series of conveyor belts and machines making chocolate? Funny how we never saw that room in the tour huh? That's because non disclosure agreements aside, Wonka wasn't going to trust his secrets to a group of strangers. So that's reason number 1 he created a bunch of fake candy making rooms that would still be way too small to produce the massive amounts of chocolate he actually sells.
Reason number 2 is as he says in the movie, he needed someone to pass his secrets down to. So he sent his only non Oompa Loompa employee Mr Wilkerson to find an honest child. He found four kids that could have been candidates but they were eliminated. Augustus had a good head for business "it'll cost him a fortune in fudge" but he was a glutton. Veruca wasn't afraid to boss people around but she was spoiled and greedy. Violet was competitive but a nitwit. Mike had a scientific mind since he was always asking questions, but he was lazy. Then right in the same town Wilkerson finds Charlie Bucket. But there's a problem. All the other kids turned out the way they did because of their parents. And while Charlie was mostly a good kid, he still had a father figure in his life that was a bad influence. That's right. Grandpa Joe. After all the man spent twenty years in a bed then gets up and does a song and dance? Some kind of fraud going on there... Don't believe sweet Grandpa Joe was a bad influence? Who convinced Charlie to try the fizzy lifting drinks?
So Wonka decides to create a series of fake rooms to tour and at the same time teach the runners up and their parents a lesson. That's why he quotes a bunch of random literature references as his own private jokes at the parents expense. All while testing Charlie and how he responds. He has Mr. Wilkerson pretend to be slugworth to bribe each of the kids. Which is why we see him talking to each one. And wasn't it a bit weird that "Slugworth" knew where Charlie was only minutes after winning the tickets? That's because Wilkerson had fixed it so each of the finalists would get a golden ticket and no one else.
Upon learning about the fizzy lifting drinks, Wonka still had faith in Charlie and did one last test. He blew up at them, yelling at them. As expected Grandpa Joe yells back, with Wonka knowing he's challenging Charlie's father figure and forcing Charlie to make a choice. To take the easy way out like Grandpa Joe has done for most of his life and sell the Everlasting Gobstopper, or do the right thing.
And Charlie did the right thing. Earning his reward. Only to discover that those fantastical rooms he saw were just for show and were probably dismantled the next day before the OSHA inspector got there. But hey...that's just a theory...a film theory! And...cut
GENIUS!

Alexandru Pulhac they are not fully dead lol
Reading it as a child and reading the book now, it’s completely different, kids might get incinerated, drowned, turned into a blueberry, and literally gets split into millions of tiny pieces. Bro legit tests his candies on the workers, some got turned into blueberries and gets flown onto the moon, Willy wonker got to be pretty darn crazy.

The boat only has enough seats for the people left, therefore he knew Augustus would fall in
O h g o d
*insert suspense sound effect here
He just made a theory about it
Don't you know that everything from the golden ticket to the visit and who's the winner was all planed?
Time travelling
Can we just appreciate how MatPat just read the *ENTIRE OSHA MANUAL* for this vid for USE
Yep. That’s dedication
Or the fact that OSHA didn't exist when the movie was made but was the year it would be released. Thus giving the factory 1 yr to come up to code which may have bankrupt it. So he was just unloading a company before it would go bankrupt to a poor kid who would either rise to save it or just end up poor again
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is just one of those movies that scared you as a kid, but becomes a horror movie as you get older. That goes for both versions, but the original especially. I don't remember how many of those kids actually survived, if any of them, because it's been a while since I've last seen it. But some of them definitely didn't make it, and it's just completely brushed over.
In the book there's a bit where they establish that all of them did make it. None of them will ever be the same again, of course, but they survived.

@@Greg_thegreat chemistry will harm you eye
@@joshuajuvida4173 wonka almost spent that dollar for fixing
Okay but like...why not give it to all the children?
Hear me out.
Veruca Salt is from a super wealthy family who already know the ins and outs of owning and running a business, specifically a food based company. Not only will she be able to address the legal problems the factory faces, but she will be able to combine the companies to increase supplies and sales.
Violet Beauregard is dedicated to competition, specifically candy based competition. She will be able to provide fresh ideas to outdo competitors.
Augustus Gloop is obsessed with candy and would most likely be able to invent new ideas and flavours the keep the factory going.
Mike Teavee would be amazing at advertising, knowing what gels with the largest audience and knowing how to cast the widest net possible for virtually everyone to see the ads for the factory.
And Charlie, well with Charlie’s uncle’s background of working with Wonka and his own optimistic, carefree and creative ideals, he’s basically be the new Wonka in charge of taking care of everyone and ensuring no fights breakout between the kids.
Boom the perfect factory
okay true but like i meant instead of the whole last man standing, cut out competition and just be like yo guess what you got a ticket you five are gonna run a factory together have fun!
I would say that would be perfect,if they are old enough and more responsible
Bingo bongo Veruca's dad is a business man. He can teach them the ropes a bit. Honestly Willie or however you spell his name should've been like "congrats u have ticket u own factory once you become legal age and know what y'all doing."
and also guys, they’re not gonna be bratty kids forever. get them through awkward teenage years and their personalities and values are gonna change. just give ‘em time and they’ll figure it out
Now I want a AU movie where they’re all teens/ in their 20s trying to run the factory together. The drama would slap and honestly it would also be hilarious.
Maybe the Golden Ticket thing was a Campaign he used to raise the money he knew he needed to pay the OSHA fines he saw coming and possibly update the factory? He did almost NOT give Charlie the factory afterall... Perhaps that was because he already fulfilled atleast one of the objectives had he chosen not to give away the factory...
Osha didnt exist yet...
@boomerbreaks2133 The Movie is set in 1971, and OSHA was fully created in 1971
I genuinely feel so bad for Augustus. He was so excited to visit the factory and this fully grown man decided to fatshame and endanger an actual child.
Agreed and I'm not not defending Wonka but I feel like it's common sense not to get on your knees and drink from that... Especially when he started using both hands 😅 I wouldn't drink from that anyways because if you look at it closely that chocolate looks nasty. Like the consistency and foam is terribly off putting, but that's probably more of a set decoration issue
I mean… Augustus was warned to stop drinking from the river because it could cause the river to be contaminated, but he just ignored Wonka and kept drinking away
@@80sGeekChris-dg7ky I mean, it's possible Augustus didn't hear him. In a room full of excited kids it's difficult to make out what one individual is saying. It's also possible that Augustus didn't speak much English and mistaked what Wonka was saying for something else.
@@LucyDMusic It’s possible, but very unlikely considering the fact that Wonka was right behind when he yelled “Don’t do that! Your contaminating my entire river!”
But didn’t he say “everything in this room is edible” this implies the river is also up for grabs. He could have said “everything in this room is edible except for the river, which is off limits.”

Regarding the "factory in america" point "One day, walking home from school, Charlie sees a fifty-pence piece (A dollar bill in the US version) "..... But also the factory is based on the UK factory "cabury world" which Dahl visited.... So this would not be an OSHA issue, it would be a "Health and safety in the workplace act of 1974" but the movie is from 1971..... So in the words of Willy Wonka "Goodday sir, you lose"
I'm going to college to pursue my dreams of becoming an architect and this factory TERRIFIES me. Holy cow. So many violations of the IBC (The International Building Code.) I don't feel like counting them, but I also have concerns about the structural integrity.

Same! I saw the Burton one long before I saw the original, and while yes “Willy wonka and the chocolate factory” is superior to the new “Charlie and the chocolate factory”, Charlie and the chocolate factory is the one I grew up on. I wanna see a theory on Burton’s version lol
@@Galaxydancer203 also Roald Dahl and his family not only helped to create the newer film, they have straight up stated multiple times that they absolutely hated the original film as it was an extreme departure from the original book, and didn’t have the same essence that the original book had
Actually Burton's film has a theory that Willy Wonka is a time traveller :P
No he doesnt he just wants to get a decent heir and he was decently traumatized because of not being able to get any candy but hes not evil
Yeah
He’s evil....

Okay man, I watched a video you did on Titanic, then probability, and then this. You are great! Even if think things are a reach you always make good points and it’s so entertaining. 👏🏻👏🏻
I think another thing we all need to realize is that the original book was written in 1964, long before OSHA became law.
And sure, while there may have been some workplace rules back then regarding safety and other hazards, they were considered guidelines more than actual rules/regulations/laws. Which means that many employers, businesses, companies and corporations did alot of things back then that are considered unethical, illegal and doesn't take the worker's health and safety into account. And these employers, businesses, companies and corporations got away with it for so many decades simply because they could since there were no legal ramifications at the time to prevent them from doing so.
So if anything, the book and the 1971 movie are just being accurate to how workplace environments probably were back then.
Imagine mat as a health inspector, that would be amazing
BEANS
lol ikr
But horrifying to the actual business owners…
He explain in detail how they did something wrong frying their brains.
"It seems you don't have railings here, BUT HEY! That's JUST a theory! ... here's your fine."
But that's not all, Let's not forget the Oompa Loompas. Wonka himself stated that he secretly transported an entire population of people in order to work in his factory, so you can add human trafficking and slave labor to the list of problems in his factory.
Lauchlin Yurchuk Lol this is sad and funny at the sad time
+Lauchlin Yurchuk - He pays them in cacao beans. They don't seem to mind.
im surprized this was actually avoided.
That's why this movie terrified me as a child
Tora idk if the modern day one means anything but he didn't force them against their will in it, they agreed to come in return for cocao beans and all the chocolate they want and stuff. I mean he still transported them and uses them for labor but they're illegal immigrants so it's still a few fines 🤷🏽♀️
Interviewer: do you think OSHA will have pity on willy wonka?
Mat Pat: laughs
Interviewer: Its a no right... right?
Quick question MatPat: Does the remake by Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory violate fewer OSHA violations? You should do an Old vs. Remake Comparison.
He also anticipated the kids getting hurt in each room. Augustus get sucked up the pipe and then they take the boat but the boat only has 4 seats of two so if Augustus didn’t get sucked up he and his mom wouldn’t have a place to sit. This also happens when they take that car thing. There are only 2 seats of two so Willy Wonka would have known he was going to loose kids along the way.🤔 But I love this movie so much and nothing could ruin it for me
I didn't even realize that. woah :O
He knew all along that each kid had their own share of weaknesses, including gluttony, bubblegum addiction, alcoholism, greed and television obsession. We all knew that he was 100% in on it.

That’s sad
Where is TNT?

I’ve been consulting companies on OSHA audit preps for two decades. This video provided greater value in 15 minutes than I did in 20 years.
Small correction: Veruca's injury would not be considered a workplace injury (worth telling OSHA about) because she 1. did not require first aid beyond what the factory was able to provide ie EMS wasn't called, the definition of a "recordable injury") and 2. She isn't a factory employee.
Anyone else find it odd that in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Golden Tickets are said to be spread out worldwide, boosting sales all over the world, yet all of the kids who got the tickets were local. Hmmmm
Can of Pringles
You consider Germany local?
Can of Coke
If you actually watch the movie you’ll see that they *are* spread out worldwide.
Can of Pringles and all speak English
And they where all kids and had slugworth know exactly where they where strage if only this was planned
Another note: wouldn't the boat contaminate the chocolate river, even if it's clean? Imagine if some oil leaked out, or some pieces break away from said boat. They'd have to be paying an incredible amount of attention to any boats that touch any of the products made in the Wonka factory. I know this is, what, 3 years late, but I feel like this would be another pretty big concern. If unnoticed, pieces of the boat could end up in the chocolate and be made into bar as it hardens, same with the oil. That could be a choking hazard or risk of food poisoning. Of course, this is only regarding the film discussed here; the more recent version with Johnny Depp used what I'm guessing is a candy boat with candy oars.
hopefully the sugar boat is just dyed sugar and not a different mix of candy and other stuff, cuz thats a diff realm of cross contaminating
the chocolate river is already molten, so its possibly hot enough to begin dissolving or melting sugar (not at the same rate ofc, chocolate and cocoa butter are a lot of oil, sugar is crystaline and melts at higher temps)
same thingnifnit was just a river of cold water, lukewarm milk (gross), any other fluid with a percentage of water (but surprizingly not in oil, so thats interesting 👀)
sugar can melt in whatever amount of water that is avalible in the chocolate river mix, or even just dissolve from the slight bit of water left in the hardened material of the boat itself over time. candy doesnt last forever lol
s o y e a
even if its a small percentage and is highly diluted in the end production of whatever chocolate product itll become, its still a percentage of candy or additional sugar to all those tons of chocolate mix
and should all of that sugar melt, every surface touched, stepped, and sat on by humans and Loompas alike are all ✨c o n t a m i n a t e d✨
On top of that you have all the soap stuff spraying out and almost certainly into the river. If you wanna talk about contamination dont talk about the german kid. TALK ABOUT THE VERY CHEMICALS WANKA HIMSELF IS PUTTING INTO IT
Well the boat that is in the film is a steam boat, meaning that it runs on coal, and wouldn’t leak that much oil.
That being said imagine all the smoke and dust particles coming out of the stacks and into the chocolate river, they would have to constantly clean out the river to get all the dust out and it’s not just the river but also the pipes that are connected to the boiler room, if left unattended and unclean, it would not only be contaminating the chocolate from the chemicals in coal or oil, but it also would be a huge fire hazard if ever those chemicals came into the boiler.
and the boat feels like an unnecessary use of transportation as wonka and the ompas walk around the chocolate river with no problem,
The tunnel itself would not only bring people trama from the images from it, but for those of the employees or consumers who have epilepsy probably would have a problem with the flashing lights in the tunnel.
The tunnel is also a flooding hazard, why, imagine if that big boat gets stuck in the very narrow gap tunnel, then all that boiling hot chocolate river that is flowing down from the waterfall would overflow and fill up the entire room until either the boat gets unstuck or the factory turns off and no more chocolate runs down the water fall.
Omg I just realised that
Maybe you should do a OSHA violation video for Five Nights at Freddy's on Game Theory. You know Fazbear Entertainment has committed a lot of OSHA violations.
Well that was even darker than I was expecting. And that REALLY says something.
Well done.
Surprised you've never covered the theory that Snowpiercer is a sequel to willy Wonka 🤔 its a fascinating theory
Wait wut. EXPLAIN NOW PLEASE
@@ttry1152 well there only a few videos on it on here one by rinho stew and a follow up by Nordic Kong but it basically says that Wilfred is actually Charlie and that his 4 goons are the 4 kids from the movie. It goes on to say that Charlie who changed his name to Wilfred (which alot of objects on the Snowpiercer train are all branded with a big W like Wonka did) and that he's the one who built the super train.
To quote Rinho Stew "Both movies revolve around economic class structure, children, food, but most interesting of all both of these stories thematically examine sacrifice choice and freewill" and "they are both movies about a group of people who work their way through a large fantastic structure, one by one a person from the group is removed from each room until one person makes it to the very end who then found out that the entire thing was a test bc a wealthy industrialist wanted to find a successor"
It's a really cool few videos. Idk if I can link videos without getting deleted but just search Willy Wonka Snowpiercer theory and it should come up. I'd love to hear MatPats thoughts on it. I'm sure he'd make and awesome video on it lol

Okay, real talk here, Mat’s theories don’t ruin movies for me. The theories make movies, games, food, and now clothes much more interesting for me. They give me a new perspective, which is something I need to understand how to do with more than one thing. Watching mat’s videos, I get to see new perspectives backed by reliable research, learn about new and fascinating topics that I’ve looked into myself after being inspired, and I just get to have a lot of fun with Mat’s jokes and commentary. I love the theorist channels.
Boxes storing food products are also not allowed to be placed directly on the floor. Something I learned working in food service.
The health inspector would be at him for that alone
Plus I believe Willy Wonka is a serial killer, because he just let all the other kids die, and the elevator was an elevator to heaven.
But it’s just a THEORY
A COMMENT theory... Thanks for reading!
The “funniest” thing of the movie is that Willy wonka doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Like, what.?!?! All of those possible death and he sarcastically pretty much says oh well, less people I have to deal with. He’s not just in trouble with osha, HES A PSCHO!
I will see Willy Wonka in prison And see how his factory is being destroyed

Dear filmtheorist,
I would have a big favour to ask regarding a very specific incident:
In the Episode "If wishes were horses" of "Star Trek - Deep Space Nine", Chief Miles O'Brien is telling his daughter the story of Rumpelstilzchen, especially the part were he was told his own name and stomped so hard, that the whole kingdom was trembling, splitting himself in two.
Now, after O'Brien told the story, Rumpelstilzchen appeared suddenly right in front of him.
After calling for security, O'Brien called Rumpelstilzchen by his name, but he learned to stay in control of it's anger and not stomp that hard anymore.
But still it made me wonder: If Rumpelstilzchen would have stomped in the Spacestation with the same force, he used to tremble a whole Kingdom, how destructive would have been the effect to Deep Space Nine? Was O'Brien maybe lucky, that he did not by this little Word doomed the whole Space Station?
Its a good theory but the story was set in the 60's and osha wasn't established until the 70s, even in the UK. Also, none of those children died or were disfigured permanently. You could say he was on the hook for 'setting traps' as it were because he was testing the children instead of simply taking them on a tour. I know I'm really late on this comment I just thought id put it out there.
The next film: the children’s sweet revenge
He is going to die
welp he had a good run
Just like William afton! He's probably going to get spring locked.
I would actually watch that-
Mice pun
What if Wanka had already been slapped with the fines, so he created his Golden Ticket scam for 2 reasons,
1) to find a chump to offload his business to, and
2) increased sales of his chocolate to find a ticket, made him a boat load of cash to pay off the initial fines and give himself a fat stack to retire with?
For the most part, that would actually make a lot of sense

It was back in 1971. Special effects weren't as good as they are now. Plus, their budget probably wasn't that big, so they couldn't use real chocolate to make the "chocolate river". That's why it looks like brown water. Because it just is. So, yeah you're right. C'est la vie.

2:30 Actually in the chocolate industry the specific amounts of ingredients and cooking process for the chocolate for each specific company is a very heavily guarded secret.
