    Salt & Sanctuary did very well and was widely praised. Know why? Cuz they didnt do "roguelike elements". People loved Dark Souls so they made a 2d game that embodied the simplicity and complexities of Dark Souls without trying to make it different. That's what every game does wrong, they take a formula that has been perfected and try to make it different and it always is a negative draw from the game. Seriously who wants roguelike in this game? I want to make builds and grow with all the stuff I collected.

    • @killerghostmonkey
      @killerghostmonkey Před 4 lety +7

      yeah... it looks like the only thing that this game did correctly was the only thing salt & sanctuary didn't nail down and that is the overall look of this game is easy to look at. It's on sale. I might see if it's worth 7$ this weekend

      @thevisi0naryy Před 4 lety +11

      InfoBroker That sounds really closed minded, and I’m an enormous fromsoft fan. I like having games that take the formula and do it the same way, and I like games that take it and try something new.

      100 % agree with you. I love metrovanias , the moment you add the rouge-like element to it , you loose me there. the way I see it , not entirely but rogue-likes defeats the sense of progression that makes metrovanias so addictive to begin with. metrovanias respect your time , rogue-like doesn't.

    • @fernandomendes7451
      @fernandomendes7451 Před 3 lety +4

      using salt and sanctuary as a paramenter for metroidvania/souls hybrid in a world where hollow knight exists is kinda funny
      the argument of progression is also kinda dumb, the amount of grind and exploits u can do on most souls like defeats the whole argument, the same way that there are people that clear the game with basicly no soul lvl as challenges
      its ok for u to not like roguelike elements, but using other games as a comparison is weird

    • @BasedChadman
      @BasedChadman Před 3 lety +3

      Couldn't agree more. I'm sick of roguelikes and want more progression. Hades is great, but I'd rather have that style of gameplay in an ARPG instead.

    Honestly, I'm of the opinion that you either didn't _get it_ or it's just not for you. Most of the things you mention as negatives are part of the game's charm to me.

    What part of Dark Devotion is a Metroidvania?

    • @RexiconJesse
      @RexiconJesse Před 5 lety +12

      Reviewer here: I couldn't get into the details with 2~ minutes, but it fits many of the subgenre's staples:
      - A single large, interconnected map, generally with discrete rooms or sections.
      - Not all areas of this map are available at the start, often requiring the player to obtain an item (such as a weapon or key) or a new character ability to remove some obstacle blocking the path forward.
      - Maps are non-linear, and often require the player to traverse the map multiple times during the course of the game.
      - Weaker monsters will inhabit other parts of the level, re-spawning when the player revisits those rooms, and often can be defeated to gain health, ammunition, or experience points.
      -Access to new abilities can also open up shortcuts that reduce travel time.

    @kpjlflsknflksnflknsa Před 4 lety +2

    Enigmatic for the sake of it. I also found the gameplay inferior to those that implement a similar mechanic but run a lot more smoothly (e.g. Salt and Sanctuary)

    What is rogue-like? Are Blasphemous and Death’s Gambit rogue-likes? Cuz I love those games but I hate Dead cells cuz of the procedural generated dungeons

    • @Palek83
      @Palek83 Před 4 lety +1

      Rouge-like means, that on death you have to start from the beginning, but at the same time you have some kind of progression and getting stronger.
      Dark Devotion is not generated. Every room is handcrafted, means the layout is always the same. Your progress is done by experience you can spend on permanent upgrades and plates you can find by exploration permanently boosting your stats.

    • @ryuken8597
      @ryuken8597 Před 4 lety

      Palek so it’s like dark souls but without checkpoints

    • @Palek83
      @Palek83 Před 4 lety +1

      @@ryuken8597 Not exactly.
      1. You loose all gear and have to start with gear available at blacksmith (discovered previously in the dungeon, but it is not the best one)
      2. You cannot teleport to wherever you want. Only one checkpoint can be active and you have to activate it while in the dungeon. The question is if you want to activate one very close to the boss to get back to him fast with a weak gear from blacksmith, or you know where a nice weapon/armour is hidden in the dungeon to pick it up before the fight nd you activate a checkpoint somwhere earlier. If you want to be prepared as much as you can, you have to know locations of items and plan a longer path before engaging the boss.

      Ahhh...the new gamer is growing old of challenging results after death.
      Playing hours of EverQuest and then dying and even losing a level getting your body back was hardcore and to the point.
      I relish the kind of challenge that encourages the player not to die, lest they behold the penalties of true challenge.

      i played it and it isnt that bad. The cool legendary Weapons, that drop from Bosses are permanently unlocked and can be equiped again, if you die. And that goes for some armor aswell. The original "rogue" took you EVERYTHING and you had to start over, DD is much more forgiving: Bosses stay dead and there are fast Travel Points. I didnt play Dark Souls, but i think this game has a similiar difficulty. You die 10, 20 or even 100 times at a Boss before you finally kill him. But the victory is way more fullfilling too.
      Give this game a chance if you like hard, retro-style games, because thats what it is - not "rogue-like".

  • @ReadyAimFire_

    The problem with this game is definitely roguelike elements, i just hate starting with no weapon at all, and going to blacksmith to get basic sword every time i die. And as a 2D souls like- there are also better games in this genre. Its okay game, but nothing more. There are better roguelikes, metroidvanias and souls clones on the market. Being clunky and not explaining things doesnt help either.

    Ahh crap I bought this game because of the theme and like metroidvanias. It’s been in my backlog.
    I’m just starting and it has roguelike elements? I really hate those.
    I’ve been gaming since the 80s so it’s not about the challenge, it makes it a different genre.
    Well it’s too late to return it, so I’ll give it my best shot.

    • @bjf9304
      @bjf9304 Před 27 dny

      Ok I put a few hours into it. It’s not bad, I would have preferred the souls formula of finding my corpse but the roguelike elements aren’t too bad so far.
      Hard as nails at the moment, I’m on my first boss. Lost my bastard sword and am stuck with shorter range weapons.
      We’ll see how it plays out.
