This game is mad fun. It's no Hollow Knight, but then again nothing will ever be like Hollow Knight. It's my favorite indie game of all time.

My favorite indie game of all time is probably celeste with wandersong being second. But wandersong hasn't even gotten a review from this guys. Its a shame since its a good game

Been playing the game for half a year now. I absolutely love it, especially the boss battles. I'm currently running a cannon build on Hard, and it is super OP. I got to final boss at about 7 play hours and then stuck at that boss for ages...
Nice! Yes the boss battles are a real highlight and very challenging. I am doing a full embrace melee build this time through but might have to try out the full resist and cannon build next time to really shake it up!

Read my words carefully. This game is gorgeous, audibly and visually. Despite the review, I love the soundtrack and sound effects. The creatures make such creepy and cool sounds! Very addicting game and the battle system is very noteworthy!

Good review here by Jace. Honestly surprised he'd have any capacity for a game review besides an update for "Smash week 2 review." What I find a little strange is the varying level environments. There are some jungle like fantasy lands, hellish cave like lands, then a laboratory? I don't know the full story so I'm not sure how they all tie together. I can definitely see some animations that are Dead Cells inspired. As some have already commented, I do think this game if on sale would be worth the pick up to try.

I remember Sundered on my radar from original release. i was always attracted to its lovely graphics , but bang on...im pretty jaded from metroidvania and roguelike. need something fresh.
Yeah I hear you on that! There are so so many of them on Switch now that they really need to do something unique to stand out. Like make it into a pinball game (looking at you Yoku's Island!)
While not the greatest game, it is absolutely fantastic to play with friends, i love the art style, it's aesthetically pleasing, the quiet is erie then boom, monster everywhere till you just can't handle it i love that

I agree with many of the points, but think the audio is much better than you say. I played through the game entirely on my Mac. What you didn't touch on necessarily -- the thing I was dissatisfied with -- is the lackluster endings compared to the amount of time it takes to get to them. It took me way longer than 12 hours to play through, and after I got the more common ending, found it very meager, and then checked out the other endings on line to see if it was worth my time, I found they were all meager and very much not worth my time to grind through to get.
Good points for sure. It's one of the things I never experienced with games like Hollow Knight. Grinding to an unsatisfactory conclusion can be very deflating. (Mark)
I try not to mention endings ever in my reviews because the journey and the endings themselves are going to be taken differently by everybody. The audio really just didn't do it for me though, just not a lot there at all outside of boss fights.

Thanks for the review, I have Sundered on the PS4 and I love it. I think it is one of these games when the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. I am looking forward to playing it on the Switch

As someone who has cleared 3/4 endings my ONLY two gripes with the game is that I wish there were more giant bosses and a customization for the finishers(Add more or larger AOE finishers for swarms).

Yep, if you don't want the mobile might as well. This game is actually a little tough on mobile anyways when you get to boss fights because your character becomes tiny.

I've been super excited for this game I love the art style of it I love the hand drawn art style plus the game looks really fun I love the looks of the monsters. I've already pre-ordered this game for the switch I hope that they make a physical copy for the switch because I would love to have the physical game of it

@@jglover8 so put about 10 hours into the game so far it's definitely not what I was totally expecting I have noticed some small dips in frame rate nothing that's affected my combat I definitely would have loved to see some enemies that work differently reskinned like you said in the video for the different areas and the music was definitely lacking but I just put some tunes on to help with thatLOL definitely worth the purchase the combat is definitely what holds me there and the awesome boss fights and I do love the leveling up system thanks you for the awesome recommendation both me and my girlfriend have thoroughly enjoyed the game so far

Yeah, I was disappointed to find that there wasn't a physical release because I feel the same way as you. I buy pretty much every indie roguelike worth getting on my Switch, which means I got a lot of games over the last few days (the sale currently going on in the eShop is insane!), but Sundered has so far been my favorite metroidvania roguelike of the bunch. I think my only arguement with the game so far is that I would've liked to have seen a bit more variety of enemy types in each area, but the more you play it and further into the map you get, you start to realize that there is a pretty decent variety already. So, although I now think there is a good variety, just being a picky perfectionist, I would LOVE to see them do a huge update down the road sometime where they add a large variety of new enemy types for each individual biome area. Besides that, the game is great in my opinion! The hand-drawn art style is just amazing, the environments are really cool and work well with the story background, the combat is frenetically fast-paced and entirely skill-based so you will never die and feel like it wasn't your own fault, the pacing of the new skills & weapons you acquire as well as the upgrades you can purchase through the skill tree back at the sanctuary are paced perfectly so you don't feel like you are OP, and it's slow enough to make you feel like you've earned the upgrades right around the time you are acquiring them. All in all, it's an amazing game so far, and I hope to see many more awesome roguelikes from Thunder Lotus in the future. Perhaps they could do a tactical turn-based roguelike next? Just a thought 😁. Regardless, I'll definitely be watching to see what they have in store for their next endeavor.
This game has great artstyle and auto pilot game play. If you can enter a zen like state and play it half sleep, it's great. However if you bring your thoughts into it, it will struggle to impress.

Are there any true metroidvanias, (games without rogue elements) on the switch aside from hollow knight and axiom?
Yeah there are a few. I'm actually playing Necroshere at the moment and although it's super simple, visually it's a really cool little metroidvania. For a more visually appealing title- Hunter's Legacy is a lovely little game, quite simple, but I enjoyed it. Guacamelee 1 and 2 are amazing. Pinstripes nice but short and more of an adventure. Ghost 1.0 is a great game. Dandara is absolutely wonderful.

Glad I could provide some insight! I did enjoy it a good deal but yes it has its flaws for sure. Sale is a good way to go, or as others have mentioned it is much cheaper on Steam if you play anything on PC.

There is another one that is simular. Forgot the name,but on P.C., only. Your a vampyre. Get elemental powers,weapons. Fight somw story characters. Depending choices made.

Hey I'm early, edit: ok let's see how the game is, looks like a an interesting title, looks like any other Metroidvenia, oh you get it, ok that is a shame about the story, the progress sounds like a grind, combining the rougelike elements in a game like this is very tricky, guess that this isn't the best with the implementation, the combat looks like fun, ohhh but repetitive, well the bosses are the saving grace, ok in summary it's a good game but a bit generic, so good to spend some time nut nothing amazing, ok, the value it's Spot on, thanks for the review happy gaming :)

Good editing, some good observations and great speaking voice. This comes off as a professional quality review.
BUT.. is it me or was there no mention at all of the actual gameplay? Yes you mentioned the air dash and a few little things like that, but no explanation of the core mechanics and how it feels from moment to moment to play. This is the single most important thing to action game lovers. Are you a big fan of action games? And you mentioned other games like Hollow Knight but a direct and more nuanced comparison would have been helpful. Does it feel like Dead Cells? Rogue Legacy? Hollow Knight? in which ways? I know how you feel about the game after listening to your review, which is important, but I don’t feel like I have enough information to know if I would like it.
Thank you for the constructive criticism! To try to briefly answer your question, combat is closer to Dead Cells than Hollow Knight, but less methodical and a bit more hack and slash if that makes sense. There is a lot of spamming attack for combo chains, dodge rolling out of attacks, and then continuing to smash the melee combo. I didn't find I used the energy cannon a whole lot as it was slow. Aerial combat is a lot of fun here as attacking an enemy in the air refreshes your double jump, so with skill you can stay airborn for a long time.

I lost interest in dead cells because there wasn’t enough skill involved.
Your ability to progress in the game depends almost entirely on the strength of your traps and weapons.
combat started to feel the same over and over and enemy variety isn’t very good.
the way some of the elite enemies teleport right next to you is a good idea but the way they use it feels like a cheap way to make it difficult.
Hollow knight was much better with respect to requiring skill to progress.
@@darkstar4494 based on that, I think you will get bored of the combat in Sundered. The boss fights definitely test you and are a lot of fun, but the rest of the game does not change a whole lot. Yes there are new enemies added with more health points and who do more damage, but the end product of button smash and roll/air dodge at the right time applies throughout. It is not like Hollow Knight where different enemies actually require completely different tactics.

I’d try lots more games if I had some recourse.

It looks like a atmospheric metroidvania. Just the tone differs to Hallow Knight. Not the biggest fan of the genre and there is a over saturation. May sit this one out
