In true Porsche fashion, the Taycan family is growing! You can’t be a real Porsche until you have enough variants to completely confuse us all while spending hours on the configurator. So we thought, why not give you a Taycan Buyers Guide!
Today we’re looking at the two entry level cars of the Taycan line-up, the Taycan 4S and the newly introduced base Taycan, which is rear wheel driven only! I will also compare them in a way you’ve not seen here before, with a full augmented reality walkaround, in some parts!
So there’s tonnes of Taycans; Porsche recently announced the new Cross Turismo: a wagon shaped Taycan which sits higher, with more luggage room and off roading traits. It comes in a 4, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, so theres another 4 taycans to choose or confuse! And incase you were confused thinking this is the last variant, there will also be a Sport Turismo: another wagon or shooting brake, but a LOW SLUNG car maintaining the sexy low down sports car look of the normal Taycan. This is my fave, can’t wait for it.
So there will probably be a literal dozen taycans for you to choose from, and thats a good thing, because as we found the Turbo S was a properly exciting sports car, and delivered on porsche’s Soul Electrified promise.
But we aren’t looking at dozens today, instead we’re going to focus on our two entry level models, by worked from the top of the range down.
First I’ll show you all the things the Taycan models shade, like the Permanent magnet synchronous electric motor, a 600-amp pulse inverter which is our motor on the rear, and a 2 speed gearbox.
But after this, there are significant mechanical changes among the Taycans, and for customers a very confusing number of power and range figures for what is the same car. For example you may hear the Turbo S is 761 BHP, but thats only on overboost in launch control. Otherwise it’s 635 BHP normally, the exact same as what you get on the normal Turbo daily! Range and power figures for some models also change depending on if you get the two deck performance battery...
So to make things much simpler, we’re going to explore them all in a very Simple way today!

Great review and reflects my feelings very well. As a longtime rwd Bmw driver I firstly aimed at the rwd Taycan. I was lucky to drive the rwd just before the order and the choice after the test-drive was very easy. There is a massive difference in power in these two models and coming out of a F80 Competition the 4S was the only choice for me. The rwd just felt slow, much slower than I thought it would be. It did not have the thrill you would expect of driving a Porsche. The 4S in contrary is an incredible car and definitely felt faster than my own M3.

Raz, great review. I also got the 4S. Over speced according to you, but I don’t plan to sell any time soon.
At 6:33 you mentioned that the vents behind the front wheels are often called fake. I’m sorry to say that it is depending on what options you choose. If you choose the power charging port door which is standard on the Turbo S than that vent is blocked due to the equipment in that area. I didn’t spec the power charging port door for several reasons, one being keeping all vent orifices real.

I had an opportunity to drive the base Taycan yesterday .I agree it feels underpowered. The 4S would undoubtedly provide the proper amount of power for my needs. I was also surprised by how long this car is. Another issue i had was how awkward it is to enter and exit the vehicle if you're a tall driver. I'm 6'4" , and with the seat pushed all the way back, it is very difficult to exit the vehicle with any amount of ease. A 2 door variant would solve this problem. Lots of good features too...but for tall drivers, not the ideal choice.

    • @Brian-jv8iy
      @Brian-jv8iy Před 2 lety

It’s good, but I feel the price difference is so small, it’s not worth getting the rwd.
You need at least 15k euro in options to have all the stuff that comes standard in a VW T-Roc or Tiguan (and Porsche uses exactly the same hardware and software). 15k is the difference for the 4S.
I only find the base Taycan to be sensible if you don’t get a single option, just pay for a color or interior. If you want some options, I think doubling it to 30k makes the most sense.
I wanted a BMW i4 but now it turns out it can be more expensive than the Taycan.

Raz, loved the review as always but when talking about "real world" in your EV reviews, why not include a look at the day to day experience of the charging network for the model in question? At the moment the ownership experience of a 4S will be seriously affected by the range anxiety inducing unreliability and patchy availability of the charging network. Despite the appalling levels of customer service at Tesla, their supercharging network is so fast, reliable and has such wide coverage that I won't be swapping my Tesla for a 4S until the non-Tesla charging network has massively improved. Until then I would only be able to enjoy a 4S for journeys that begin and end at home knowing I can charge it overnight at home. Can you do a Tesla/Porsche EV comparison in one of your new series videos?

I have the Turbo,I have driven the 4S also, the difference in performance is night and day,the 4S seems slow in comparison once you drive both,if you can afford the extra for the Turbo please go for it over the 4S.

In the US, the difference between the base and the 4S is roughly $20k. That’s not quite “for a little more” lol.

Hi , thanks for the great videos. I have a Taycan 4S ST. But without Power Steering Plus. I know you have had both. Do you think it’s worth upgrading using FOD? Thanks Graeme

I have never driven the simple Taycan, but I have driven 4S, and it is a beast. The Turbo S should be nuts to drive

Was invited by Porsche to try out the Taycan 4S a while back. Fully agree. It has just the right amount of power - and the handling is next level. As a Cayenne owner I cannot wait to upgrade to the Cross Turismo with similar specs.

I was thinking about that yesterday, Porsche should really try to simplify the Taycan range. The turbo S to me should just be a performance package on the turbo, and the cross Turismo should just be a package too, that includes the outside changes plus the bigger battery plus air suspension and all wheel drive on the base model that doesn't have it 🤷
Basically you'd only have a base model, a 4 or 4S, a GTS and a turbo, either as a sedan or wagon

3-pin charging is just a question of how much daily range you need on a regular basis. If you rarely do more than 50 miles in s day it works perfectly well but of course a dedicated 7kW charger is preferable for convenience.
