Porsche Panamera vs Taycan - The COMPLETE Challenge | Fifth Gear

  • The Porsche Taycan is generally considered to be the EV sports car of the moment. Incredible performance, 250 mile range, yet still a proper 4 seater. And the top of the tree Turbo S model is ballistic. Yes, it costs £140,000, but it has 750 hp, gets to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and goes on to 162mph. Absolutely nothing can come close. Except perhaps, its petrol-powered relative, the £140,000 Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid. This boasts nearly 700 hp, gets to 62 in 3.5 seconds and goes on to nearly 200mph. And its lighter.

    At a comparison level below that of your testers, the Taycan 4S Cross Turismo competes squarely with the Panamera E-Hybrid. I first drove he Panamera, in 4S guise, back when it was launched and since then the car has just become that much more capable and attractive. But without a doubt, choosing the Taycan 4S CT was the better choice for us. Imagine a world where you wake up to a full tank (or 80% full if you want your tanks to keep operating optimally) every morning, for 20% of the comparable $/km of gas; or can pay for your fuel using the panels on the roof of your house. Now imagine with zero fuss or fanfare, sub 4 second 0-60 launches are the turn of a knob and two pedals pushes away, all day. Every time you get into the vehicle it’s the temp you choose. And it drives with ethereal, telepathic precision leaving you to think “well of course it does; it’s a Porsche…”
    The hood line is low and blends 911 with Mission E. Looks are gorgeous and everyone around town looks twice to see “what was that?!?”
    Both are amazing cars and there are certainly some luxurious touches the Panamera has over the Taycan. Ultimately Taycan wins!

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 Před 10 měsíci +1

      The 20% of the cost will only hold as long as EVs are a small minority of vehicles on the road. The UK government gets over £25 billion a year in fuel duty, and another £12 billion in fuel VAT; it will get that money from somewhere else (e.g. electricity...). In the US, taxes on fuel are lower, but the same applies (never mind the current "eco-incentives" on vehicle purchases).

    • @michael-masi-2021
      @michael-masi-2021 Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@dlevi67 you are wrong. The cost of solar panels is coming down and infact right now today it's VERY affordable to put solar for your home/EV.
      How is the government going to increase the cost of electricity while you are the one manufacturing it? And you're able to expand on you're production capabilities each year at lower overheads.
      Answer: they can't/won't

    • @michael-masi-2021
      @michael-masi-2021 Před 9 měsíci +1

      I have been taken around Silverstone in a Taycan S Turbo and the Porsche drivers do not hold back, full send from the moment you launch (with launch control that 2.8s).
      I can testify that in high speed corner and tight corners there is little to no body roll and the grip is insane. One of my drivers even tried to get the car to break traction mid corner at about 100mph... Nope, the tires would NOT allow and the chassis was way too planted.
      The Taycan is a beast and a total sleeper. If you pulled up next to one in many supercars you are about to get a very fast surprise when the Taycan leaves the scene.
      Depending on where you read online it's 2.8 or 2.6s 0-60 (0-100 kph).
      The launch control is almost dangerous. If your passengers head is not forced back into the headrest.... It's about to be... In a very violent way.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 Před 9 měsíci

      @@michael-masi-2021 The cost of electricity is not at all what I'm talking about. It's the government's tax revenue deriving from fossil fuels that will decrease and eventually disappear. However, the rest of public spending (of money coming from taxation) is not majorly influenced by the price of energy, and will still need to be financed.
      If the government can't get that revenue by increasing electricity prices (and they may or may not be able to - they could simply outlaw unregulated solar panels and tax the regulated ones, just like they do with alcohol duty), other taxes will have to go up. From VED to road charging to whatever else they come up with.
      ETA: whether the balance in tax changes results in "lower costs" going to the owners of BEVs is a completely open question; it might, it might not, it might even reverse the situation. What is certain is that that amount of tax revenue will not simply be forgotten or forgiven.

      Your idea of taxing solar panels is preposterous to say the least.

      @@peterhammer4644 In UK, I have seen a leaf being used 2 to 3 days before it needs a charge, it has regeenrative charging and most driving is on B roads and city driving.
      In faster traffic on the highways, the charge drops faster, and range can be an issue if you expect 300 miles, but are getting 200 miles at highway speeds. But I do understand the charging speed and network is more important to compete with the gas engines.

      Yes the charge drops quite a lot driving at 130 km/h in compared to 80 km/h and also in the winter months it drops significantly. But even then it's not an issue if you keep your battery temperature high enough.

    "Absolutely nothing can come close" ...Tesla model S plaid with track package is significantly quicker on a track, has a higher top speed, more power, quicker acceleration, higher efficiency, longer range, is safer, has better software and is less expensive.

    • @peterhammer4644
      @peterhammer4644 Před 7 měsíci +2

      The Tesla is definitely not safer LMFAO. It's a much lighter car with way worse materials used. Also it
      1. looks horrible
      2. interior sucks in every possible way
      3. materials feel very cheap
      4. using the glued i-pad when driving is dangerous
      5. its not significantly faster on track, on the Ring time they cheated with tyres, lighter car and many more things. Easy to find this in the internet.
      6. it drives way worse (haven't driven the Plaid but the "ludicrous" mode Model S several times) and the handling is not even close to the level of the Taycan
      7. its way less comfortable, noises everywhere that would drive me mad
      8. its a Tesla

      The objective tests say it is safer.. safety =/= upholstery, lol.
      1 and 2 are you pretending your opinions are facts and 3 is an indication that it is actually very cheap compared to the Taycan.
      "4. using the glued i-pad when driving is dangerous" Except that statistics suggest Teslas are significantly safer than the average car
      "5. its not significantly faster on track, on the Ring time they cheated with tyres, lighter car and many more things. Easy to find this in the internet. "
      Misinformation which you probably believe because you hate Tesla, propagated by others who hate Tesla on the internet. The Tires are part of the track package and the car is lighter because Tesla has superior battery engineering to Porsche, among other things.
      "6. it drives way worse (haven't driven the Plaid but the "ludicrous" mode Model S several times) "
      The Plaid is a completely different car .
      "and the handling is not even close to the level of the Taycan"
      Not true with the track package. It showed higher cornering speeds than the Taycan, and slightly higher lateral acceleration even without those tires.
      7. "its way less comfortable, noises everywhere that would drive me mad"
      Untrue, it is a rather quiet car.
      8. "its a Tesla "
      That explains your bias, then.
