In this video I do a review of several digital multimeters. I compare features and functionality. I explain safety features, number of digits, display count, accuracy and resolution.
The multimeters in this review: Fluke 287 / 289, Fluke 115 / 116 / 117, Brymen TBM251 / BM251, RSR MS8209, Toptronic T830.

Hey Martin, maybe you should update this video yearly (at year’s end, like around now ;-) and select the best for each class: pro, hobby and casual users (and maybe others like electronics vs electric, etc). Also you could tell us your current setup for the past year and the rational for choosing them. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks for the feedback. Most multimeters do millivolts but microvolts is another story...you need to look at the spec / data sheet of the multimeter to see what resolution it goes to. Cheers, Martin.
@Kainu1 Only a pleasure. Thanks for watching and your comment.
@samgab Thanks for posting your comment. Good point....there's nothing to be lost trying to calibrate the cheap multimeter...I'll give it a bash and post the results of it works out. Thanks for the suggestion and watching.
My pleasure, thanks for the feedback.
My pleasure, thanks for the feedback. A good set of leads can make a big difference...so a wise investment. Cheers, Martin.
I would love to see a new round of hi-end handheld DMMs reviews for 2021! A lot of your reviews are from 2011...I bet you have great ideas on how to do it all over again. We don't always get a 2nd chance. 😉 Shall we call it "Revisted - 10 Years Later"? Maybe review the hi-end offerings from each country per video?
German, French, Taiwanese, Japanese, Malaysian, American - other manufacturers.
Thanks for the post, valuable feedback. Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for you response, glad to know there is know reason why 9V is a must. Maybe later AA will be used where ever possible and that will be one small step to making life easier.
Thanks
Thanks for the feedback.
I enjoy your video, I got alot from it besides the bare basics that I already knew. I recently bought a Etek 10709, I know its not a high tech one but for what i use it for, its great for me. I will be looking into getting better leads too.
I am about to embark on the fantastic journey thorough your "Multimeter reviews" playlist, almost finished with this the first and are enjoying every second!
My initial standpoint is that maybe the Fluke is fantastic, but I find it inconceivable to pay the same for a multimeter, as for an oscilloscope!
Maybe I am wiser afterward. :-)
In my time installing remote car starters i started with a used Bluepoint DMM. It was good for a while but as i found after a year that testing resistance was very inaccurate, i soon bought a Fluke 287 and it was night and day. by far the best DMM in the vid, the only downside is 6AA batteries. They really need to make a removable rechargeable battery.
@kirimikium Yes, a simple cheaper multimeter can certainly meet most needs if you don't require it for specific electronic / electrical work where it may have some limitations. There are several well priced multimeters that I have reviewed on my channel that you may want to take a look at. Cheers,
Martin.
Thank you for the information. I Will be getting the Fluke 115 over almost getting a Equus 3320
Thanks for the feedback.
These videos may help: "Electronics Tutorial #3 - Power Consumption / Power consumption for batteries"
"Battery Capacity testing - Part 1"
Cheers, Martin.
Thanks for the video. I will be getting the Fluke 115.
Thanks for the reviews and heads up on what to keep in mind when shopping around.
Would you know of a mulit meter that mesures microvolts and millivolts or do I need another type of meter for these ranges?
Thanks again for your time.
I look forward to it. Thanks for posting.
can you do a review comparing the fluke 1587fc VS megger 430
Excellent....I'm sure you'll enjoy it for many years!
@gustavoindustry Thanks forr watching. I'm about to post a video on the EX530 that you may find intersting. I will certainly consider making a video on how to use a multimeter for beginners....I may learn a thing to two by doing it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Would the amprobe model 37XRA be a good DMM for hobby electronics?I want to buy a decent DMM I liked the amprobe 37XRA because it has the features that I might need.Excellent tutorial!Thank you
@whiskeyjack59 My pleasure, thanks for watching.
Good video but I got lost with the counts
for example, seems like 6000 counts displayed on the Fluke as long as it was in the 6V range, but when you step out of that into the next higher range 60V it became more like a 600 count on the display?
I'm skint, so low cost stuff....
I have a generic old mini meter that is still available new, for less than 3 quid delivered. It is only 0.02 Volts different to my Fluke 77.
Build quality is good enough to withstand a 3 foot drop.
Not bad.
The fuse issue is resolved easily, if less neatly, by simply using an in line fuse holder. I wouldn't be put off at the omission of a fuse.
want some review of cie chung instruments model like CIE9005T
they are good with lot of protection.
hi martin i have question for you i use multimeter uni t ut58d
i use it correctly ,and for few years.
on of the sudden i get message connect test leads on its screen, but reading are correct and everything else works perfect,do you know what could be the problem.thanks in advance
I have a digital auto range multimeter that has a separate RANGE button. What is this button for and how would I use it? Thanks!
@gustavoindustry I don't have one yet but if you do a search for "how to use a multimeter" in Google or CZcams you will see many references.
@gvsfgdf Thanks for the comment and for watching. Yes...you certainly get what you pay for with a Fluke.
Hey Martin, how about a dedicated test lead / probe set reveiew? after all,the meter is only as usfull as it's probes right? Thanks !
I understand that this is an older video, Cheers for doing this bud :-)
Hi
whats your take on the budget Dixon Digital Multi-meter M890G from cash crusaders?
Regards
Do you have a video where you discuss the significance of a separate milliamp input jack? I'm wondering if the distinction input jack is no longer necessary and a selling gimmick, or necessary. Thanks from Texas.
he never answers any more...
Hello, I am trying to get help about purchasing my first real (safe) multimeter. I have had a number of cheapies, but after a near accident with an unused ones I've decided to purchase a quality one. Which Fluke one would best be suited for working with up to 220v mains and for checking things like start capacitors and home electrical needs, plus I want to learn how to diagnose and work on PCB boards, and computer type circuitry. I see so many Fluke models that it's rather confusing. I see most knowledgeable persons like yourself using the 87v, but I've also seen the 179, and 200 series. I don't mind spending the money on a lifetime warranty product that I will have forever. Your thoughts please.
Seems the high end Fuke had more resolution and less accuracy than the 115 and Bryman! What good is precision without accuracy??
Have you tried any or the TENMA multimeters? 72-7745 seems to be a good product. Any opinions?
Love my 115. Had dozens of cheap ones. Fluke's take a drop and maintain accuracy longer. I have burned my other ones when I got careless and my fluke has endured my careless-ness.
Good Evening. Its a nice video and wide explaination. Thanks. My search for a new multimeter brought me here. Any idea which multimeter offers the best accuracy in Electronics repairs..?? I am fed up of cheap chinese multimeter.. Thanks
Hi! Can I get your help, how can I measure electricity in my forearm?
;-) thanks for the feedback.
Useful and informative video, cool accent btw!
@thamesuser No, I'm not sure why they don't use AA or AAA batteries as it certainly would be a better and cheaper solution.
@gustavoindustry It's depends on your application and how much you are willng to spend but Fluke is certainly a good buy and investment.
I bought a Sinometer MS8268...Yet to get it but I got it for dirt cheap. msrp 60$ but I got it for 20. A bit worried it'll come in pieces, but we'll see :)
Since it is never used, it likely lives in the bottom of a drawer.
What you have to remember is that where a good multimeter differs from a cheap bad one is when you do something you are not supposed to do.
Measure amps short circuit on mains with a cheap multimeter and you will blow your hand off. Do it with an expensive and you just blow a fuse.
Fluke are no a ripoff, there expensive because there reliable and can withstand use in a professional environment.
at 47:39 you say that the price for the Fluke 115 2.100-2.200 (G)rand, maybe you should make a comment about what the price is in dollars, as you state the price in dollars for all the rest? :-)
Sick Video
Is there a reason why they dont just take AA or AAA batteries? Its very convenient to run all my devices off of these.
Anyway, thanks for your excellent review.
Actually i got 3 MASTECH Meters might make a video of them some day ....
hang on, you have had the cheapo multimeter "since college", you have opened it up to find it "quite scary" yet it works.....years later
Sanwa, a Japanese brand is pretty good according to my experience.
@Fearlessthinker Thansk Fearless. And in years gone past....I've done exactly that! LOL!
15:52 it's not 1.1 out, but it's only 0.01!
You have entirely missed the distinction between accuracy and reality. Having ignored the difference between analog and digital. I would like to see you investigate something like the Simpson 360. It does not log anything. But it does give you a real time view.
Your section on leads also ignored a Great Fluke product. The Insulating percing
leads.
\\\\\\\\\\
Multimeter test lead + HOLD switch together (push button surface test lead, button with own cable, modified connector to multimeter) is cheapest handy solution (to solve the problem HOLD button). Why China will not do this kind of shit (everything else they do)?
Julian Assange?
FLUKE is a RIP OFF
i use Mastech cheap dependable expendable and dead on accurate !
