  • Today we got Warrior Welding on the set to show us some basics of stick welding stacking beads on a fillet weld all the way out. He is using 7018 stick electrode all the way out. Practice makes perfect!

      I'm a weld noob. Starting with a 110V inverter box and building a basket with some 1/2" steel tube. Is building up fillers like this possible on thin material? This tube has like 0.04" walls and I've already blown through it making tack welds. I've blown through it because I'm inexperienced but I'm also curious if It'll stand up to me building up fillets around the 90° tube joints. Yea, I coped out the tubes at the joints.

    In Welding School many years ago. We were given a 4x4 1/2" plate. 7018 to make as close as we could a 4x4 cube. Then sawed in half to look for slag. Then the whole class was given a 10 pound can of rod and made a fillet weld. Was taught to keep our hoods down....

    • @jackmioff000
      @jackmioff000 Před rokem

      That whole last part made no sense, why was the whole class given a 10lb box of rods? And for what? 10lbs isn't enough for a whole class and who made fillet welds and why? And why did you have go keep your hood down? What was the outcome of the slag in the cube test?

    • @spanky3441
      @spanky3441 Před rokem +9

      @@jackmioff000 I meant each student got a ten pound box of rod. And that while welding it is needed to keep your hood down to get something done. We took turns welding. The cube test was to learn uniformity. Those that tried to hurry had slag and porosity. And to learn to take your time clean and inspect each pass. We were all just learning to weld

    I love to weld with electrode. I got a feeling this methode is more appreciated in USA than in my country where it's considered as an old inefficient technic barely used on some specific projects. Most of welders in Poland works on flux core CO2 shielded MAG or solid wire with NCO2 and Tig on pipes. I wish to weld more with stick 😊

  • @hokep61
    @hokep61 Před 2 lety +6

    This is an essential skill when doing "build-up" on large nozzle to vessel joints, pull lugs etc. I always likened it to stacking logs in a corner. Same method can be applied to different processes, SMAW, FCAW & TIG. Can even be applied to sub arc. One thing...with good 7018 and proper machine setting....the stick rod can be angled troward direction of travel and can be pretty much "dragged" along. I know this is a demo....but in the real code world.....NEVER rapid cool, water quench the weld material. Makes the material more brittle and can cause cracking. Retired after 35+ years pressure vessel work.

    Get some 2” angle and cut them into 8” pieces. Tack two pieces together to where you have 4 angled sides. Have the newbies practice like that its great. Doesnt have to be thick angle either. They can practice flat vertical horizontal and overhead with that and itll take them forever to fill

    • @MassHysteriaHD
      @MassHysteriaHD Před 11 měsíci +1

      No waiting. Just clean the slag off and go on to the next. If you're doing this exercise than bring your metal to a quench bucket to cool it off every 7 or 8 passes

    Auch!! That's not a root pass. Why weave it? It should be a single string. Finally, you started using the fan: too much weld deposit and uneven passes. The overlap to the previous passes should be tighter. If you place a fillet weld gauge will show the spaces and bumps. But it will hold. At a major structural manufacturer, mmmm.? But it should be appreciated that you are teaching beginners

    Matt I will cut. To the chase if you are learning to weld 7018 are not the best 6013 are easier to use the weld looks better,and two hand welding is a not a good practice, you have poor control over the electrode when welding around irregular shaped fabrications,and if you are payed for what you produce you would not make much because you would be slow using to hands.you are not alone using this welding technique, maybe I am old school but that's how i was instructed to do in the UK and it works. Something to think about Matt . from a old UK WELDER,could go on but it might bore your subscribers
