The Small Essentials I Pack
Vložit

- Today you will see my travel essentials that fit in the small pockets of my carry-on bag. I pack little travel essentials in a backpack or a tote bag.
These must-have items will be used in the airplane or at my final destination. They are essential to my trip, but I can pack them in my backpack since they are so small. My travel tip is to use the backpack or tote as an extension or part of your suitcase. So here are the little things that I pack in my carry-on bag pockets. #travelessentials

Just got back from a flight to Maine. I used your idea of putting liquid bag in suitcase after getting thru TSA. I also put that bag into a gallon size zip lock just to be safe 😉 and funny moments TSA dude says to me “you get to go right thru this gate mam cause you packed perfectly” I wanted to say because I watch this lady on CZcams 🙌🏻💯
EEEEK I love it! Thanks so much.
I prefer to lock my bag before i put it in the overheads. I also recommend taking photos of items of clothing for potential insurance claims.
Great idea!
Happy to be one person who helps move you closer to 100,000!
Each one is so appreciated!
I didn't realize until I started watching your videos how much I liked pouches. My obsession has increased. I even organize drawers with them and packing cubes. smush and squish away. Love my LL Bean pouches and my dollar tree ones! I even used a small one for my cloth masks, my favorite comfy ones . It fits all 5
Thank you for all your travel tips.
On Monday I received news from Atlanta that my aunt had passed away.
I was able to easily pull out my backpack with my essentials already in it, grab a couple packing cubes, fold my clothes, and be ready to get on the plane.
The mask case is a great idea, and in constant use!
Thank you for making it so much easier to travel :)
So glad!!
I always refer to your videos before I travel. I am more organized and don’t forget things. Thank you. 🤗
I’m so glad they’re helpful!
Howdy Laurie, at 70, I now need to take prescription meds throughout the day. So the 1st thing on every packing list is 'MEDS' - and, the last thing on every packing list is 'MEDS'. They are top priority - higher than clothes, tickets, wallet/money, or devices. Great video, as usual!
The most important thing to me is you make me think “strategy” of packing. Being organized, think ahead and pay attention! Also, everyone’s comments are a treasure trove of even more ideas. I’m riding with you to the next milestone😻
It does help so much!
I agree with you. Just got back from a getaway road trip with my sister. SHe packed 60 minutes before I picked her up from her house! When we got to hotel she had forgotten her CPAP machine and broughtTWO swimsuit bottoms and NO top. I listened to her snore for 2 nights and we never went to the pool....but wer're sisters so we still had a blast together!
I made myself a “travel night stand”. I use a very small crafting caddy with multiple pockets. In it I keep normal night stand items: reading glasses, lip balm, small flashlight, phone charger, pen and paper. I also slip my phone in a pocket while I’m sleeping. I keep it supplied and packed all the time. I can’t imagine traveling without it.
Wouldn't it be awful?!
I use a purse organizer for these same items. It also keeps me from forgetting things when I pack for home.
That's so awesome! I do something similar in my purse, only with pouches :)
Great idea. I had one that I took empty on the trip I just returned from. Next time I'll put it to use on the night stand!
I just started packing a set of 3M command strip hooks (1 per person) that we put inside the door of the hotel room for our masks… that way no one forgets where they put it and it’s a reminder to grab it on the way out the door. Thanks for all your tips!!!!
Great idea. I used my hook on my bag this past trip so I would not forget my mask to the airport.
If you already have the IKEA Skubb containers, the smallest square one makes a great place to put your watch/keys/jewelry in a hotel room. A set of 6 of them is $5 and they fold flat and make for easy packing.
Hi Laurie,
You are offering wonderful travel hacks as usual.
I just got back from my 1st enter national trip in over 2 years. I have always used small mesh and plastic zipper pouches of various sizes for small items. My new travel hack is to use a light weight purse organizer inside my backpack. I keep all my little things in the small outer pockets, such as earbuds, eyemask, any meds I might need on the plane, tissues, wet wipes, little powerbank, etc. The larger center pocket holds my book, my tablet, and my phone. I have a small carabiner clipped on which also holds the two tiny handles together. Plus a medium size Hero clip. The whole thing lifts right into and out of my backpack. I can hang it up using the hero clip. And the smaller carabiner clip can hold my water bottle. Plus, when I get home, the whole thing can go right into my purse where many of the items will continue to live in organizational bliss.
Last time we flew (2019) I put all of my essential things I would need on the plane (lip balm, clorox wipes, hand lotion) in the smallest packing cube I had. When I got to my seat my personal bag with purse went under the seat and the seatbelt went through the handle on the packing cube so it was there when I needed it but I didn't have to worry about it falling between the seats.
Oh, that is so smart! Love it!
Brilliant! tfs
FANTASTIC IDEA!!!!! Last time I flew I dropped my small bag with my chapstick/lotion and it was impossible to pick up until we landed
Thanks for all you share. I have a travel tip to share. I use the clear drinking glasses that are in the hotel room and keep my jewlery in it on my nightstand. Clear and easy to see through. My little tip. Thanks again
Superb!
Hi Laurie, love the video, thank you! One idea my friend taught me when we stay in hotels is just put a tissue on the bedside table for your jewelry and watch. It is white and stands out so you won't forget the items are there. Thanks again! :-)
That’s a good tip. My mom does that!
I love the tissue idea!! One less thing to pack and worry over! 👍🏻
Be careful with this that you don't accidentally lose your hearing aids as my mother did.
That’s what you need What you don’t need
I love this easy idea!! Thanks.
Girl, I love you. I am such a nervous and still a bit of a newbie traveler. I'm always looking for ways to make it easier because I'm determined to travel more in what's left of my life. Thank you. I think you might be the most genuine creator I'm subscribed to. Thank you for being so approachable.
Thank you for watching and best of luck to you!
Fun video, you are adorable! 😂 Love when the bloopers stay in. You will be 100,000 before you know it. If there are pockets on the outside of a bag I insist on zippers but inside I'm fine with a few open ones. I despise the outside pockets that have a snap! They never stay closed. My masks just go in a ziplock. I found some small neon mesh pencil cases with zippers I love for my cords and meds. So easy to find in my carryon.
Snaps are a no-go for sure!
Love all your tips! One I've used many times is to take duct tape and roll a generous amount around a pen or pencil. I've used it to hem a skirt, repair a broken sandal strap, and seal a tear in a soft-sided carry-on case.
Thanks for sharing!!
Well in less than 12 hours I'll be on a airplane. I haven't flown in 25 years, and thanks to Laurie awesome videos I'm very ready for this trip. Thank you Laurie!!
Sorry for the delay. How did it go?
Hi Laurie, I can’t thank you enough for all of the great videos! I’ve done a lot of travel, domestically and internationally but I found that I’ve overpacked and also sometimes forgotten things. I love all the details you provide and videos, keep it coming!
Thanks for all the fun ideas of the many cases. Personally, I use Ziploc's for everything that isn't a liquid. Cheap, light, less bulk ;) 😻
Smart!
I just love your channel, it’s so incredibly helpful. I haven’t traveled in years but am planning a four day trip & you have been so helpful. Thank you!
Thanks so much! A four day trip is really hard for me to pack for. That's when I usually overpack lol. Have fun!
Pockets - most important that they are either closed or secure enough that nothing falls out when reaching for those small items. I’ve had a variety of styles but a quality bag will keep things more secure, no matter the pockets. Congratulations as you head to 100K subscribers!
Thanks!
Great tips, as usual Laurie. Thanks.
I have 2 travel tips, 1st is i use eye contact lenses case for make-up one side foundation other side powder, another one i use for carmax chap-stick other side Vicks vaporup. 2nd is the week container for meditation i use it for 7 different types of meds example: Sunday = Asprin, Monday = Ibuprofen, Tuesday = stool softner Wednesday = pepto bismol tablets, ect.
Ooh I like that organization!
I do that as well. Beats all those bottles in your bags.
God Bless you Laurie !! You have been a real blessing to me and my family!!
We deeply appreciate you !
Thanks!
Laurie, I have been following yr channel for ages and really enjoy each one either as a reminder or learning new tips. Much appreciate tye time and effort you out into content.
The best tip in this video which I would never have thought about was the colored, collapsible container next to the bed for hotel or visiting family.
What a great way not to forget items.!!!
Hi and thank you! Someone suggested a peanut butter lid or even a bright piece of fabric too.
Love your tips for traveling!
For my purse a must is a zipper closure, for carry on's I like all 3 type pockets they all seem to serve a purpose. Not only are your videos informative but I love how you list items from your video, I can't tell you how many products I have bought from watching your videos! Congrats on getting close to 100k!!
Thanks again for your support and excitement for travel!
I enjoy your videos and learn quite a bit from your tips!
Mine are:
-I carry a fan with me (plastic or paper from the Japanese dollar store, Daiso) as it may be hot on a plane while boarding until the AC comes on.
-I replace my toiletry container lids with pop-up hinged ones, as it is hard for me to see any screw-on lids if I drop them.
-I use a multiipocket vest (Scott-E Vest) to carry on my medical supplies and important items (I was on a plane that had to make an emergency landing once, and I did not have any pockets to place any important items, as you need to leave all behind to have both hands free when you evacuate. Safely landed with no injuries to anyone in that incident.)
-I separate my credit cards, cash and ID’s into smaller wallets and place in different locations in case one gets taken or lost.
-I use older, non TSA locks to secure my carryon bags.
-I place luggage tags, inside and out, on my carryons (a few times they were separated from me, once in that emergency situation).
You will reach 100K soon!
A vest with pockets, great idea!
Thanks for these tips!
Hi Laurie, I'm a senior-traveller living in Alsace France. We traveled a lot before Covid and will finally be spending Christmas in QUEBEC this year! My tip is to buy on Amazon disposable non slip Shoe Covers . They cost about 5$ for 100, and you can slip them on when you have to take off your shoes at security check. Much better than using old socks, You just throw them away afterwards. Love your channel; thanks!
I'm so happy for you!! Thanks.
The backpack you recommended is AMAZING! So many pockets, stylish and most importantly the zippers are super strong!❤️ I tend to be an over packer!
Thank you, Laurie!
I do love it! And it slides on easily.
Congratulations on almost 100,000 Laurie❣❣❣So proud of how far you've come girl🌟Joan
For real!
So excited about your subs advancing up! You always have usable hints!
Just got back from Florida and used the Compression Packing Cubes for the first time and they worked out great. Left so much room for other things, or as my husband says everything but the kitchen sink. Used many of your recommendations this trip and what a difference it made. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I prefer a tote with lots of pockets, inside and out. Zippered over snapped and not a big fan of the net pockets. A couple of things I include in my tote is a small flashlight and first aid kit. Keep the videos coming they are great!
Thanks! The fak I call a DIY amenities kit-sound more like first class lol.
Yay soooo exciting! So the count down begins!
You are awesome, informative, witty and wonderful! We so live watching and utilizing your wonder travel tricks and tips !
I live your Squash and Squeeze techniques!
LOVE
Thank you again!
My husband and I just had a conversation about his medicine. I told him the same things that you said about his personal item. He thought he should just put it in his carry-on. So I shared the part of your video that explained it and I was able to say, “See!”😄. I love when I have backup! Congratulations on getting close to 100k! I’ve followed you for several years. You’re my go-to authority!
Yay! I would screenshot anything that could be proof from the website just in case.

Laurie, Thank you for your videos, which are great! They always leave me excitedly awaiting your next video. You have made so many new friends from afar, as we view your latest tips. 🙂❤ I prefer a zippered carry-on backpack and open or mesh pockets inside. Other essentials in my backpack are: eyeglass case, hand sanitizer, mask, antibacterial wipes, mini Totes umbrella, gum, black ultra-fine Sharpie, ink pen, small tablet or journal, Ziploc extra bags, poly vinyl file folder with clear dividers to hold important papers, such as emergency contacts, list of medications, reactions to medications, previous surgeries, travel itinerary, blank envelopes, etc. A pair of socks or yoga soft shoes are a nice addition for comfort on long flights when I want to take off my shoes. One more tip: I pack 1 or 2 poly vinyl mesh placemats that I use in the hotel or guest room to place my rings, jewelry, glasses, makeup and more. It easily wipes clean, weighs nothing, and folds in half. One can go on the nightstand/dresser, and the second one on the bathroom vanity. Thank you, again, for your helpful hints. Enjoy your week.
P. S. My sister's name is Laurie, too.
I LOVE the placemat tip!! Thanks Cathy.
I have my first solo flight next month and feel very well prepared thanks to your videos!
Hi Laurie. My husband and I purchased plain sterling silver wedding bands for travel and I have a set of inexpensive Silpada jewelry (necklace / earrings / ring) that I travel with. No worries if it gets lost in the pool or ocean or left behind in a hotel room. Less things to stress about!
Yes to less stress!
I recently purchased a “travel valet”. About 4” square, packs flat, snap corners, makes a great bedside/bathroom counter personal items holder! I went on a girl trip with 6 other women (Savannah was so much fun!) and gifted each with a brightly colored valet! They looked at me like what is this… By the the time we left they all agreed that weirdly awkward item was their new travel essential!
I have one too! Love it!
I love all your travel tips. I really liked your travel back pack. I ordered it for my trip and was so helpful and easy to carry.
That's wonderful news.
Thanks for your videos and links to your essentials. Happy Travels.
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos. I just bought a suitcase and I don’t even have any place to go yet- because you get me all excited for Tavel lol. Such useful and fun videos/-Thanks! 🥰
Haha I totally understand!
Hi Laurie thanks for the video. Great tips. A suggestion that works for me; shampoo bar and conditioner bar
They never leak.
Also, mesh bag for the bath soap if you prefer to use your own
Laurie!!! Thank you so much for all of your videos. I don’t travel via airplane often but I have multiple trips coming up in the next nine months and your tips have helped me tremendously!!!!
I’m so glad Serena!
Looking forward to receiving the backpack that you recommend today! Thank you for all of the useful advice! 😊
You are so welcome!
I recently found a Travelon pouch that is long and narrow. It’s plastic, see thru with three sections. I think it will be perfect for inflight essentials and fit in the seat pocket. It comes in a two pack so hubby gets one too. Thanks for your videos.
I just saw that yesterday and the pic is so blurry! Thanks I may get it.
Love your videos! I ALWAYS take a thin-fabric fold up grocery bag in my carry on backpack. My family often gets food at the airport and if I'm getting several items, I can throw them in the grocery bag to carry to our waiting area. We usually eat before getting on the plane (no smelly food on plane is polite), then fold the bag back up.
Somehow, I always end up needing that extra bag at some point. Several sweaters/jackets that are removed during flight, trinkets purchased or getting off the plane quickly without putting stuff back in organized carry-on, the list is endless.
You're so right! And easy to pack.
Keli. another reason to have a grocery bag with you is in case they make you check your carry-on. Then you can throw your laptop and other essentials into your bag and take it with you. This happened to me once when everyone was forced to check their carry-ons at the gate.
One of my favorite hacks is the Two way zipper secret pockets you sew inside your pants/ clothing. It holds my money passport, ext. This is one of my favorite travel hacks, especially traveling internationally. I bought From Amazon (pack of 10). There are even underwear/clothing with hidden compartments for everyone today, I love them all.
Thanks for sharing these.
I love this idea, but could not find the pockets on amazon. Can you help?
Love your channel 💕 100k ! Much deserved. Congratulations!🎉
Thank you!
Congrats on being so close to 100,000! I am sure it will happen soon. Love your tips.
Thank you so much!
I bought the striped backpack that you recommended, absolutely love it, lots of pockets and love how it opens nice & wide.
Awesome
Where can I get it
I SO enjoy your videos and bought some of the packing cubes for my husband’s recent trip. I am laughing that I am obsessed with watching these as I have great anxiety about travel now and can’t imagine going anywhere but here I am watching with interest! I used to travel a lot and my husband is retired from an airline...we could be using all these tips....maybe someday! 😜
I hope! Live!
Laurie: love all your travel knowledge. Zip vs open pockets: I put the necessary items I need to get to (tissue, mints, earbuds) in the open pockets but put the important items (passport, mini wallet, meds, etc.) in the zipper pockets. Just something I use to remember where I put things: important vs not-so-important. I am subscribed!
Awesome!!
Congratulations on almost hitting the milestone for number of subscribers. It is a BIG DEAL! When you hit one million subscribers I will certainly travel with you! Sometimes those eye makeup sponge applicators aren't very good. In an emergency, a Q-tip will work to apply eye shadow. Love your videos.
That's true! Thank you so much.
Love what you do.. thank you for your dedication and experience!😃
I appreciate that!
Hi a tip for clothes
DIY -wrinkle releaser for your clothes: 1 tsp. fabric softener or hair conditioner in 1/3 cup water (2.6 oz) spray it on your clothes and pat down the wrinkles.
Works great for me
So fun! Thank you Laurie❣️🧳
Hi Lori. Nice to meet you from one Houstonian to another. I am looking forward to traveling again and appreciate your tips. Happy travels!
Thank you so much! Enjoy the dry weather this week.
First travel channel I’ve subscribed to. Keep the content coming MsLaurie!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Whoot whoot, you're almost there! Binging your video as I am three days from Hawaii!!
How is Hawaii??
Amazing video as always (love your laugh!). I use the soap dish (if there is one) for my jewelry on the nightstand. We often stay at a Residence Inn and if that is the case, you can use a cereal bowl as well! have a great day!
Cool-that would be helpful.
I wish I could multiply myself so many times just to be that one to get you to your 100,000... you certainly owe it !!👏🤞🙏🙂
Love your channel ,your sense of humour and your efficient tips and hacks.
Say hi to Aulli haven't seen him in on your video's for a while 🙂
Tami(from 🇮🇱)
Thank you so much!
Absolutely love your tips❤️
Thank you Helena!
I’m just now watching your video, as we are doing a 2 week trip soon. What I have done for my jewelry is to us the lid for the coffee cups the hotel supplies. Good size and usually they are white or black. I actually have one now in my carry bag and decided to keep it there to use once I arrive at my destination.
I love Hollywood tape! It has saved me from some sticky situations! Great list!
It's so good! Sticky! Haha
Most of the things on your list are in my backpack. But two things that I have to have in my personal bag are a small flashlight and a retractable back scratcher. I am always dropping things. I don’t want to use my phone battery to look for it. And the retractable backscratcher is to pull the item towards me so I can pick it up. I have used this so many times! BTW: your hair looks great!
I love that hack!
My go to bag is the nomad lane bento bag. I love this channel. Keep it up.
Great tips Laurie. I learn something new everytime i was thinking one of your videos!! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!
I love your videos!! I travel internationally often enough so your videos are super helpful especially when I found out I could bring all that hand sanitizer a little while back! My travel tip is I always bring cotton rounds and micellar water to freshen up my face. After a few hours on the plane it's nice before I put on make up or even if I just want to wake up a little.
Thank you!!
I love the roll cord bag. I also pack small pouches so I know what to pull out based on what I need.
Congratulations on being so close to 100K. Well deserved! As always, some great tips.
Thanks so much!
I have a smallish 7-day pill box in which I keep a portable pharmacy - Excedrin (for me), Tylenol, Motrin (for my husband), anti-diarrhea pills, Advil, Jr., leg cramp pills, and Children's Claritin. I use my label maker to identify them. It hardly takes up space in my handbag. I find that the travel packs for Tylenol, etc. are relatively large. I have bigger 7-day pill boxes for my meds, my husband's meds, and my son's meds. Also, I have a leather coin tray with snaps to make it a tray, and then I can unsnap it to lay flat in my suitcase. I prefer that to a lid for my jewelry on the night stand. For my suitcase, I also have ballet slippers that are flat and fit into a really small packing cube. I have two satin nightgowns and a satin bathrobe that fit into a small packing cube as well. Not every hotel provides a bathrobe.
I love these ideas!
Thank you Laurie!
Happy to add one more subscription to your count! Your videos are incredibly helpful plus fun to watch. So many great tips! Stacking the the liquids on their side really does save space. Sharing your site with several friends and family.
Thank you so much!
Laurie I love your travel tips. I bought the carry-on bag that you have. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
I really love it!
Ty so much.
Definitely use a mask chain when traveling too! So easy to take your mask off and put it back on! You can find them on Amazon, I would'nt be without it now! I also have a spare surgical mask folded in a key pouch and have a very small bottle of hand desinfectant attached to the key chain.
I just bought one from JCrew. Thanks for watching!
Laurie, I use quart-sized Zip-Loc bags for smaller items like medicines and cosmetics, with a separate one for my liquids. I find that they weigh next-to-nothing and are clear so that I can immediately see what's inside. Also, I couple of months ago I purchased the personal item bag that you shared with viewers ... the one with the light interior. I really like it. Keep on posting; I always enjoy your tips.
I may use that one soon.
I just bought that backpack. For the first time. I leave in 12 days to Scotland. First trip since Covid. I’ll let you know how I did. Thank you for your tips 😀
Love your bloopers!😍
😊 thank you
For my Jewlrey when I travel I use a washcloth and put it next to the tv. That is where I put all my jewelry for the next day. Easy to spot and always in the same place. Happy miles!
Hi Laurie! Thanks for your videos! My favorite travel hack is to keep my day and night face creams in...wait for it...contact lens cases! A new case comes in every box of solution, so I end up with a lot of them. I pump my day cream intoone side and my night cream into the other. It will last me about 5 days or maybe even 7 if I stretch it, and it's so tiny it barely takes up any space. I label each side with a Sharpie so I know which is which (and that step also keeps me from confusing it with the case I use for my contacts - ha!). It's worked great on multiple trips.
This is a great hack. Thanks!
Thank you 🌺
Thank you so much I love your tips!!! 👍
Glad you like them!
Lauri, you have helped me so much. Thank you!!!
3/30/23 9:54 am
Love your videos, so glad I found your channel, my Aunt, cousin and myself are traveling to Ireland next June, we all got the backpack you feature. I love it. Thanks for tips.
EEEEK so fun!
Glad to hear someone else sews the blouse “gap”! I’ll have to try the tape.
If you can sew, that's great! I am very crooked lol.
The peanut butter lid trick is a great hack! I'll have to keep that in mind 😁
Funny I thought I had subscribed you before. Good thing you mentioned and I looked at your subscribers and I saw that subscribe was still up. You've got one more!
I Like all kinds of pockets .
I use small jewelry bags that keep your jewelry from tarnishing. Found them on Amazon. I put my jewelry in them so everything has its own bag. I then use a small soft bag that has pockets to slip the packets in. It works great.
Congratulations on getting your silver plaque. That is awesome. 😃🥳
Yes, if it is a must for you, pack it!
I also bought the compression bags (mine have Van Gogh paintings), the liquid bags & the thing that holds your phone in flight. So helpful! Thank you!
Oh the thing that holds your phone so you can watch shows mid-flight? I forgot mine on my last trip!
I love your videos! You always have innovative solutions to travel issues. I think I have something solved and then I watch one of your videos and your idea is better than mine!...lol...I travel internationally from Canada and I usually travel alone, so I don't like juggling things and I like easy access. I prefer zippered carry-on's as I have had items roll out on the plane and I like mesh interior pockets so I can locate something at a glance.
That does make it easier. Hope to visit Canada soon.
Hi Laurie👋🏽 Happy Sunday!! 😃
I’m making my list as I was watching your video 📝 thanks the tips. I’m traveling next month 🥳🥳😊
Congrats!! 100,000 will happen sooner than you know it😁🤗🤗
Thank you!
One more nearer to 100 000, love your videos 😊
Yes! Thank you!
I shared with my husband your tip about having a separate pouch for his mini iPad and other in-flight essentials for his trip. He’s mentioned it several times what a great idea and he can’t believe he never knew about it before.
Wow, this makes me so happy! Thanks.
Such great tips...
Glad you like them!
I have several small handbags that a wallet will not fit in. I purchased your thin pink wallet and I love it.
Good to know! It's truly the best!
