  • Hi, today I will teach you packing tips and tricks for carry-on luggage. These travel tips will help your bags be more organized and compact. I will show you how I pack my carry-on with tips I have learned from years of travel as a pilot’s wife. Notice I am showing tips for carryon luggage. Google your airline and carry-on requirements for the sizes allowed. You can pack in a suitcase, a large tote bag, a small duffel bag. All of these packing tips will help you in whatever luggage you travel with. Here is how I pack my carry on for a trip after I have checked the weather.

    Pack in gallon freezer ziplock bags. Freezer bags are stronger and have stronger zip top. Zip the top almost all the way. Lay the bag on a hard chair, sit on it. While still sitting on the bag, zip it completely. Compression bag!

    Here's another tip: I pack a multi-hook over the door hanger from the dollar store for the back of the bathroom door in my hotel so I can hang multiple items. You're lucky if there's even a single hook. I hang my toiletry kit, pajamas, robe etc. If I forget it, it's no big deal.

      @@UppityRib I lucked out on this past weekend's trip. There were 2 hooks on bathroom door, one hook on wall, and 3 hooks on wall by room entry door - sort of like a foyer. Hey Laurie!
    I’ve been preparing for my first solo trip in probably 15 years - when I left my 1yo with daddy and went to London. Now, 3 MORE kids later, I’m taking a trip by myself again. I’ve appreciated your packing light tips because I don’t even remember how to pack for anything but 6 people. 😂 Thanks for reminding me I don’t need extra clothes, baby wipes, sippy cups, diapers, blankies, etc. And instead of 4 iPads and 4 phones with their chargers, I can shove ALL my tech gear in one small tech bag! What a concept!
    I’m tempted to pack for 10 days in a carryon just because I can (I did use my brain and book fares that allow a checked bag for when I start packing and come back to reality).
    Also - my daughter earned her pilot’s license this summer and she’s off to college in Sept to learn how to fly! Maybe one day I’ll be flying standby with her ❤️❤️❤️

I tried packing cubes after your recommendation and they are great, but the COMPRESSION cubes are the greatest thing since the invention of wheels on suitcases! And all your advice on "personal items" made me understand that they can be much more than just a purse or handbag. Now if I can just resist my Girl Scout training of BE PREPARED and stop taking 2 or 3 of so many things, I could have even more space. Thank you so much!

    Great Video! I really enjoy your channel!
    In April, we are taking on a 25 day Transatlantic cruise (Enchanted Princess) from Florida to Scandinavia! (St. Petersburg was eliminated from the itinerary for obvious reasons.) Although we are checking one bag, I've learned enough from your videos to pack efficiently! We guys don't need to consider a make up bag, & we have sailed on Princess ships enough to feel confident about leaving our shampoos & conditioners at home. We are taking a supply of laundry 'pods' (in the checked luggage) to do laundry. So we are packing clothes for eight days.
    Since our weather will vary dramatically, we are packing clothes we can layer cardigans, jackets & vests. There WILL be 'formal nights,' but I have jacket/trouser separates which will do double duty as a suit or dressy casual. I have always worn bow ties, so packing for dress up will not be an issue. I also have a number of scarves that will serve as ascots or neck wraps to dress up a tee shirt. I am bringing mostly long sleeved tees, which will work fine in the Transatlantic portion of the cruise. We stocked up on KN95 masks from Amazon, as well as some good quality compression socks. At sea days will be fine: we usually take stairs for exercise. We did a Mediterranean/Transatlantic trip in 2019; I brag that I lost TWO pounds! And STILL enjoyed the cuisine.

    I may very well have the world's largest collection of packing cubes! I love that national parks set you show (and I did get that, despite having a gazillion Eagle Creek ones). Like you, I mix and match tops with just a few bottoms. What I do is pack the same pallette in a cube. For example, one might have my khaki Travelsmith lightweight pants, 3 short sleeve T's, and 1 long sleeve T that go with those pants. A small folder may have my black gauze pants with a couple of tunic tops, a tank, and 2 transluscent tops that go with that tank.

    Hey, Laurie! Thanks for your help with traveling!! It’s been a huge blessing!
    We just experienced something that we were unaware of. We had to throw away our ham sandwiches because of the pork! I’m sad. We had them on homemade sourdough bread from a local food truck in St. Croix.🍞 It was packaged ham too! Live and learn. Any can comments? Thanks. 🙏

      @SnowySpiritRuby Před 2 lety +1

      St. Croix the island or St. Croix the city? If the island, and you were trying to take the sandwiches into the U.S. (if you were bringing it into a country other than the U.S., I'm afraid I don't know other countries' laws on this), I'm not surprised - the Customs & Border Patrol website has a whole list of foods you can and can't bring into the U.S. (I hope Laurie does a video on this topic soon), and meat and produce are on the prohibited/highly restricted list. The only time it was ever an issue for me, we had just deplaned and I was trying to find a trash (there wasn't one, and I later figured out why) to put my apple core in (I hadn't put it in the trash when the flight attendant came around with a trash bag because I hadn't finished my apple yet), and an officer with a scent detection dog came up to me and she treated me like I was some kind of criminal, even through I told her that I was simply looking for a trash to put my apple core in, then put it in the held out trash bag in her hand.

    Hi Laurie, My best packing tip, is to use the packing method you have decided what works best. I usually use compression cubes, but on a recent trip I decided to just go without using the cubes. I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so frustrated all weekend. Couldn’t find things, didn’t have a laundry bag, suitcase was always a mess. Never again, even if it means another trip up the stairs. Another tip is to pack a night light. I usually plug it in the bathroom for just a little bit of light for when you wake up in a different place.

    When we traveled when our kids were little I packed a days outfit in a gallon ziplock bag and just squished out as much air as I could. In the morning I could hand a bag of clothes for the day and a child to my husband and it was the easiest way to get one of them dressed. In fact, when they were really little I put clothes for both kids for the day in one bag. As my kids got older they could pick out a bag and get themselves dressed. Saved me being constantly asked what are they wearing today and where is it.

    Normally when I travel for Christmas (granted, it's always a road trip, never flying), I end up using my just-barely-too-big-for-carryon-so-has-to-be-checked-when-flying suitcase (only 1"-2" too big on each dimension), in addition to my smaller-than-standard (I think 19x12x8?) carryon and 14"-ish underseat-sized suitcase, since winter layers are bulkier. This time, somehow, I managed to fit all of my clothes/footwear/toiletries/etc. into my bigger carryon, and I think only one pair of boots (I only took 3 pairs of shoes/boots - hiking boots for the road trip days/significantly warmer days (I don't like wearing Muck boots in the car on road trips - my feet swell too much with all the elevation changes), Muck boots for snow and just everyday wear, and dressy boots for church) didn't fit into it, so I was able to fit the underseat suitcase and whatever boots didn't fit in the carryon into the checked suitcase, which meant I had one less suitcase to have to deal with. The only reasons I was able to pack so little, though, are 1) I treat my regular packing cubes like compression cubes, so I stuff them absolutely completely full (I roll things tightly then put them in the cubes), and 2) I keep a full set of full size toiletries, a pillow (my neck is super picky about pillows, so I have to use a particular kind), and a few winter layers (my mom and I are the same size, so I can also wear something of hers if I need to) at my parents' house, since that's where I always go for Christmas (and it's always home base on all other trips, regardless of whether I'm flying or driving). I didn't quite manage to pack it all in the same on the way home, but there were a few extra things packed in the bigger carryon for going home that had been packed in a bag of sewing stuff on the way out, so it made sense. I'm still amazed with myself - normally, it's 3 suitcases (the smallest holds medical stuff), an overnight bag (holds either medical stuff, or clothes/toiletries for a single overnight en route), a backpack, a duffel, a pillow, a tote bag with my weighted blanket, my Muck boots (they don't really fit into any of my bags except the biggest suitcase (which usually has clothes in it, so not usually somewhere I want to pack them if I can avoid it), so they usually just get tossed in either the backseat or the truck bed) and anything that needs to go to my parents' house; with all that stuff, you wouldn't necessarily think that one less bag would make much difference, but it really does, especially when in a minivan vs. a truck (when flying, it's just the carryon, the backpack, and the overnight bag, plus my wheelchair, and those bags either hook over or strap onto the chair, so my hands are still free).

    These tips are great for small bags for average size people, but "long legs" like me might need larger compression bags. I need these tips when doing emergency packing such as power outage wildfire evacuation or medical emergency. The more outfits I can fit in my largest bag the longer I can remain in my evac location. Also you should always pack a black or navy outfit in case you need to attend a funeral before going all the way back home. I've had a number of times when I needed this.
