Giant Can Sealer Machine Restoration - I Failed the Canning Test!

  • In this video, I restored a can-sealing machine made in 1900s Germany.
    More about the restoration process:
    I bought this can sealing machine from an auction site. I found it very interesting, and it was worth the effort because we don't see something like this every day.
    The restoration process was uneventful but extensive. The pieces were rusted from water and time, especially the lower part. The whole project took almost three weeks.
    One of the wooden handles was cracked, and I had to replace it, so I made a new one from scratch. I also made new brass ferrules.
    The disassembly alone took over 14 hours. I cleaned the large rusty parts with a 2000-watt laser: www.sfxlyxc.com/?aff=2198
    The smaller parts with the sandblaster.
    I also wanted to keep a vintage industrial look and succeeded in using RAL 5024 powder coating.
    I also bought several empty tins to test at the end, but unfortunately, I couldn't find the proper containers. I also adjusted the machine as much as possible (I spent four hours trying to do the test), but that's probably because the tins from that period had different sizes.
    The most exciting aspect about this canning machine is that it was made in Breslau, then Germany. After 1945, the city's name was changed to Wroclaw, part of Poland's territory.
    Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why! I answer them all!
    Cheers! Johnny.

    Nicely restored, interesting simple machine!
    As for the cans not fitting issue, you have a lathe, so it should be easy to make a sized template for the cans you have, with matching internal threads. This machine looks like one could replace the plate to match the cans, hence why it can be removed by unscrewing it.

    Не расстраивайтесь, просто отрегулируйте как следует ножи и всё получится. А вообще банку закатывают обычно с содержимым. С большим удивлением прочитал, что в ссср использовали консервированную кипячёную воду. Казалось бы, можно посмеяться, но задумка очень даже неплохая. Такая вода хранится очень долго. Её обычно использовали и используют на подводных лодках, в аварийных морских запасах, например, на шлюпках, в спасательных плотах и иных средствах спасения, на воде.

    I would try putting your tool lower when turning on the lathe, it looks like it's super high and rubbing more than cutting. Should help a lot with forming a chip and cutting material. A truck I use to find center height is cut the face of the stock when it's chucked up close to the chuck, starting below center and working my way up until there is no "nub" left when I face the part.

    How does lasering differ from sand blasting?

    • @rustyshadesrestoration
      @rustyshadesrestoration  Před 9 měsíci

      A Sandblaster uses abrasive media (sand, walnuts, glass beds etc.) that is blown by high-pressure air while a laser hits a beam of the particles on different surfaces and makes them lose the bond.
      The laser is much more eco-friendly and faster (can clean difficult spots) and doesn't damage the surface if well adjusted, while Sandblaster cleans quite the same or even better sometimes, but it is messy and dangerous for health and very slow. As well, you can't clean big-size items.
      Sandblaster is a cheap way of cleaning rust/paint, while laser isn't-pretty expensive and has high electricity consumption.

    Ok and so the can sealer doesnt work cause its missing parts, out of proper adjustment, or the operator doesnt know what theyre doing?

      You missed one thing: today's cans can't fit a machine made at the end of the 1800s.

      Oh! Well cool ... so its just a thing of modern cans dont work in antique can sealers. Thanks for the heads up. I'm currently looking for a can sealer and I actually hate modern day products cause theyre usually junk thats made in communist china, but now I know to be careful of how far back I go concerning the age of the antique can sealer

    Вывод: В начале, была ржавая ХРЕНЬ, от которой избавились, из за крайней НЕФУНКЦИОНАЛЬНОСТИ (приспособление для испытания нервов). В результате реанимирования, эта хрень, сведет в могилу ещё не одного ИСПЫТАТЕЛЯ.))))))) Прежде чем затевать подобный ПРОЕКТ, не мешало бы в целом принять решение - стоит ли начинать. ))))))))))) Вот так наглядно открывают ЯЩИК ПАНДОРЫ, ныряют в черную неизвестность, а потом окружающие расхлебывают ))))))))) Ну где, в каком месте здесь РАЗУМ ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Ну уж если ОБДЕЛАЛСЯ, ну не смог разобраться и тебя настигло ФИАСКО, за каким бесом, ты это выкладывал !?!?!?! САДО МАЗО ???

    Why do you wear gloves when taking something apart? Is the rust or paint or metal dangerous?

    • @rustyshadesrestoration
      @rustyshadesrestoration  Před 11 měsíci

      The rust isn't dangerous for the skin, but other substances that I'm using, yes. The cold bluing especially. I'm using them as well for aesthetic purpose, because I'm a hard working person and my hands aren't looking so great always.

    Take machining classes.

      I think for self-learning I'm doing it well. Here in my region, nobody makes machining classes anymore. This job is quickly disappearing.
