I got recently 3 new RTX Zipcore wedges in 50, 54 and 60 degrees in a very good fitting session. They were the clubs that offered me most benefits. I really enjoy them.
Having nine generations of Vokey speaks volumes for the design and build quality and consistency; with all the professionals continuing to use them, that's a living testament. That said, my personal preference remains with the Cleveland legacy wedges. I keep coming back to my 588 Gunmetals, superb feel and touch with still plenty of bite and spin after two+ decades in and out of my bag. They have also retained their black finish even after many, many rounds and practice, unlike the newer line iterations from Cleveland.
Over past 10 years i've had SM6's, SM7's, then SM8's last year and sold them and custom ordered TM MG3 wedges, 52 deg and a 56 TW grind. The TW grind has a shaved off heel and a beveled off leading edge for pitches and chips off of tight lies. Works great. These will wear out in about 3 years and then i'll move into SM10's !
I love my sm9 wedges by far the best wedges I've ever used. I just replaced my Wilson staff hi toe wedges with them and they are streets ahead of the Wilsons in every category. Better feel, sound, spin, control and distance control.
Nice honest review Pete. Look forward to more of the Build The Bag series.
I play TM wedges. Hi toe copper raw insert gap, blacked out MG3 sand, and a RAC3 lob. I like the rainbow set up, and it works.
I went from the zipcore to Hi-3 and I absolutely love em. I feel like I can do anything around the green, whatever the stance, grip, face you name it and I only do 3/4 shots with my 56 and 60 anyways. I would love to try SM sometime, only problem I have are all the different grinds. According to the selector I should have a 50-8F, 56-10S and 60-8M
I have to say that I fully agree with your findings here Pete. But the only thing I would say in difference is that I found the Cleveland wedges easier to control then the vokeys due to the weighting of the vokeys being heavier and in delicate shots they were a bit harder to control. So I have been playing the Cleveland wedges and I have since shaved off more strokes.
Just got the new Rtx 6s â€â€
Chefs kiss, extra saucey! Luv those wedges!! Broke alot of hearts in skins matches with the old rtxs
Completely agree with this. My Cleveland wedges definitely feel more balanced and easier to hit those finnessee shots
I have the SM9's and I think they're very forgiving but the spin the produce is trash compared to the ZipCores which I loved.
what's your favourite club in the bag?
You should definitely test the mizuno T22 against these other wedges. Very good wedge
Absolutely loved my Mizunoâs. Tried the PXGâs. Immediately didnât like them. Currently running with the Vokeyâs and definitely like them, but maybe not as much as the Mizunoâs.
@Scott Mackey vokeys are always a safe bet, just absolutely love the feel off the face on the mizuno.
I'm playing T22 48, 54, and 60 degree wedges that I got this year, and they're my favorite clubs in the bag. The 48 is probably my favorite club I've ever hit too, its unreal.
I would like to see him compare the Mizuno to the Vokey, since the price is so much lower too.
I tried about 8 different wedges including vokey, rtx6 and Mizuno t22. For me, I got most feel and consistency from the rtx6. I now have them in my bag.
Jaws are my go to wedges I love them. They definitely give me the confidence behind the ball you want to have đ
Enjoying my sugar Daddys PXG. Played the Vokey previously and the Sugar Daddys are definitely a more consistent club for me.
On the other hand my son went from a PXG to a Cleveland and is extremely happy with the switch. Think it is what ever feels more comfortable for the individual. I think its definitely worth going for a fitting to find out what works for your individual game. Almost all the major brands make extremely good wedges now.
Was very confused till I watched the video
@@BigFatSmellyCheeseđđ
Vokey wedges are the best ... completely agree on the control with approaches ... I've found a few other things more promising around the green at times (such as some TM milled grinds) but cannot beat a Vokey in overall performance (IMO)
I like my ZipCore wedges. I use a 50 and a 56. Iâve probably used almost every wedge out there and I like those the best. Mine are the older ones. They feel great.
I've been gaming Cleveland Wedges for almost 15 years, and they've never let me down. My wedges are the best part of my game due to the confidence these clubs provide. Currently, we have 50, 56 (bent to 55), and 60 in the bag.
Iâve got the milled grind 3 raw face and they are brilliant in and around the green very versatile stopping power attack pins - totally agree the fuller shots you can get less forgiveness distance control / feel isnât the best .. but I think you adapt to your clubs .. they donât swing themselves
Just bought some new wedges as my old ones are getting a bit worn out and was contemplating between the SM9s, RTX 6s and Raw Jaws... ended up going with the black satin RTX 6s they looked very appealing, hope I love them.
When will we see your new Japanese hand forged irons?
Never. They are wall hangers. Wonât be played
Those clubs are just art work. Not game playing irons. Itâs sad but true.
@@jeremylowe2309 ..some of them look like theyâve been used to knock the ugly out of someone or something . Theyâre horrible looking.
Coming soooooon
â@@jeremylowe2309nah, just waiting on delivery
I have had Cleveland RTX 4âs in my bag for a few years and really loved them. Went to get new wedges, and was just going to upgrade to the RTX 6. However, ended up testing all kinds of wedges to see what I like. To my surprise, I ended up getting all new of the Wilson Staff model forged wedges and am absolutely in love with them. They are incredibly underrated. I have become slightly a Wilson fanboy as Iâve recently switched to their ball as well! Definitely worth a try
Nothing to be ashamed about being a Wilson fanboy đ. They still hold the record for most majors won, and they still produce one of the best looking and best feeling irons EVER. My next set, this year, will be a Staff Model/CB blended set. I also play the RTX4 wedges but will have a look at the Staff Model wedges too.
@@rufussthoo4083 IMO they make the most forgiving irons in the game in the D9's
@@moedark4390 There is a reason Wilson is still around seeing many others come and go.
$200 for two forged wedges. This is the exact reason I'm debating switching to wilson. You can't beat the price.
@@josiahjones9521 you will not regret it! For the looks and feel, worth every penny. Iâm considering switching everything to Wilson I love it!
Another nice thing about Vokeys that isnt really tested here is how well those grooves last over time
I have tried Vokey wedges a few times but always go back to Mizuno .... The feel is king for me and currently play the T20 .I played Scratch wedges for a few years and they were excellent !
One of my favorite wedge reviews.
Great review! I wouldnât mind going for a Titliest fitting and throwing some new vokeys in the bag.
Have the last version of Zip Core and they work crazy well in wetter conditions, crazy awesome spin too. Absolutely love them. 52°, 56°, 60° all mid bounce.
Had last years as well ... just got the rtx 6 and it is so much better in morning dew I vant even explain it
@@philrob4468 I think the ones I have now are awesome in wetter conditions.
@@philrob4468 i agree. whatever they call the new tech, it works. iâm zipping the ball all over the place now
I picked up a Wilson harmonized sole grind 56 wedge at a thrift store, hands down best club I ever bought. It might just be 56 is so consistent around greens. But inside 70 itâs a guarantee on green and high percentage of 15 ft or closer to pin. I love that wedge.
I agree with you... Pick up a groove sharpening tool and WOW what a difference! For the price you can't beat it!
I've been back and forth with sm9 and t22 . Finally settled for the t22 .
I think it's because I like the s400 shafts better than vokey wedge shafts
The RTX6 is a huge improvement over the 5 from the past 2 years. Improved looks and feel
I have these TM high toe, love the confidence they inspire.
I managed to buy a 54 and a 60 vokey sm6 last week, for nz. $100 each ie about $65us. They are like as new, very happy with them.
Surprised you have not put the Glide 4.0 in there. Iâve played Ping Eye, Cleaveland, Vokey SM6, Miura, Mizuno T20 and now moved to glide 4.0. 45,50,54,58. Love the E Grind in the 58. So easy out of bunkers and rough.
Pink eye?
@@SkakkR23 Ping Eye2 from the mid 80âs
Right now I have SM8s, and I love them. Very consistant. I am curious about wedge with grooves all the way to the toe, like the hi-toe. I like to hit more toward the toe out of the sand or thick rough.
Iâve just put the black RTX6âs in bag best ever wedges they have ever done! Went 50,54&58
Went with the ping glide 4.0, couldnât beat them with anything else. But letâs be honest, basically everything is really good right now. Everything should be played dependent. Have fun.
Very true, no duds out there
what loft you use ?
I really like the Callaway Jaws high toe. Very similar to the TaylorMade, but I found them more forgiving.
100% agree. I just got the 56 and 60 (12 deg bounce) and theyâre the best - AND most forgiving - wedges Iâve ever used (of Vokeys, Clevelands, MD4âs, etc). Roger Cleveland joined Callaway in â96 (after leaving Cleveland) and, IMHO, heâs turned them into one of the best wedge manufacturers in the game. Hit âem straight! đđŒđ
For me it was the other way around. Callaway had a more flippy feel with it's weight more towards the toe, harder to control. TM is way more balanced but has a smaller club face and bigger faced wedges might feel more forgiving.
Callaway hi-toe I found excellent from the deep bunker.
All over it was TM Vokey that made it for me.
switched to clevelandâs from vokeys about 6 years ago, and i think swinging rebar has better feel thank vokeys now. the new rtx 6âs are ridiculously good though
I left Vokey 10 years ago, difficulty gapping into my Cleveland irons, went to Cleveland wedges, a beautiful journey, currently 46, 50, 54 CBX ZipCore, 58 RTX ZipCore. Recently went Launcher XL with Recoil shafts, pulled PW, DW, went back to 46 & 50 CBX ZipCores!
Sucker
I've used Cleveland for ages but after seeing this vid, I may have to give the Vokey's a try.
Oddly I have never gotten on with the Titelist weges. I am using the Taylor Made Hi-Toe. I like them for all the reasons Peter gave, with the addition that I find them to be one of the easiest clubs to hit out of bunkers that I have ever played.
Amen brother, I put sm9s in my bag and love them. I did buy a wedge works T grind lob wedge and also love it as well
Pete I feel like you missed one that really surprised me and that's the mizuno T22 I would like to see you give it a go. As much as I hate it (I'm a big titleist guy) the mizuno feels so much better and the look at address is so nice. I got rid of my SM9 for a trio of them.
I just did the opposite. Tried to stick with the mizuno for another season but I couldnât. Like the Vokey look and grind and bounce offerings that suit my game better. Itâs all personal preference.
@BillBradley very interesting. Maybe after a few more rounds I'll go back but currently I'm liking them. I really loved my SM9s I've been using vokey wedges since 2008 or so and I feel most confident with those.
I got the S23 in 46 and 50 for full swing and the SM9 in 54 and 58 for little pitches and chips. Best of both worlds
Currently using Ping 4.0. Couldn't be happier with them. Although I'm surprised they aren't in this, there's so little between them now, you could have had three or four other brands here. All in the eye of the holder now.
Agree. I went for a fitting and they're total game changers. For me hands down the best wedges I've ever hit. So versatile.
I tested the Cleveland RTX6 Zipcore and ended up liking the Mizuno T22 much better. Felt better, got more spin, and just overall worked for me.
Very good wedge the Mizuno
Denim copper t22 are lovely đ
@@dlenny3369 Yes it is, got my 54 degree in that finish.
I love my Cleveland RX6 full face wedges!
Also with Vokey the fitting options are the best with all the different grinds and bounces.
There's no such thing as 'the best' in golf clubs, just "what is best for me". I'm pleased you mentioned that it has been a long process of testing Pete, because one fitting session (especially if indoors) has no chance of identifying what is "best for me". Sadly, few of us have any other option so hearing your reasoning helps identify options and solidify ideas. đ
@peterfinchgolf. You need to try the bettinardi wedges. Only wedge ive found that took the vokeys out of my bag. Now I bought a few sets of the 3.0s and the 5.0 are their newest rendition. But also know a few people I recommend them to that took vokeys out of their bags as well!
I game the 3.0âs in 54° & 58° and theyâre magic from 85yrds in.
That PXG wedge is such an eyesore. Vokeyâs for me. All day, every day.
Interesting results. When I got new wedges last year just after the SM9 release I ended up with Cleveland RTX5. I got better spin numbers, 500 rpm, more than the SM9s! I havenât noticed any drop off in the shots I play from my SM8s to the Clevelands. The only difference I saw was the 25/ wedge price difference!
I play Cleveland wedges, 52, 56 and 60, full face, very versatile, Iâve never been happier in my short game.
The hi toe 3 put my short game back where I like it with my playing partners going thatâs good and hitting my ball back to me!
Great comparison! I have Vokeys, Cleveland, and PXG Sugar Daddy II. They are all great IMO. Like u said, comes down to personal preference.
I have the RTX 4's in my bag. 56 & 50 mid bounce! Absolutely swear by them, brilliant clubs.
It would be interesting to see your Vokey lofts and grinds and bounce you selected and why. I know some players like a full grind with more bounce in some wedges with the next one in the bag with less bounce and grind relief. Are the shafts you have for wedges the same as your other higher irons?
i got some vokeys, absolutely loves them although i really wanna try some cleveland wedges as well
Mizuno T22 Copper Denim - favorite from Mizuno, reminded me of the T7's
Ever tried the Wilson staff wedges. Would be interesting to see a whole Wilson staff breakdown.
Youâve sold me on the vokey.
Pete, I find that the MG3 regulars should have been included. They were the best by My Golf Spy and I hit them the best of all. Ping also makes some amazing wedges in wet(the best) and dry and should have been included.
Interested why you didnt test the Milled Grind 3 wedge, not the high toe version. Smaller shaoe, better on full shots. Interesting.
I have the milled grind 3 TW edition 56 and 60° and theyre the best wedges i tested. I had the milled grind 2 versions too.
Vokeys have never been the highest spinning for me. But Ive played them for 15 years because I know exactly how theyll perform and Ill get the tightest spin dispersion each and every time I make the contact I should.
Have yet to find a nicer feeling/performing wedge than Mizunoo T22, but Zipcores and vokeys are always good! :)
I want that swing Pete. I need it.
I got the SM9's and it has been love hate; on bad days I don't want to shape shots. I just want a simple stock pitch to the middle of the green which is very difficult...On good days, however, you feel like Spieth throwing darts!
Vokey gap & SW. Use a MG3 HT for lob because that sole is just so good on tight lies. Mixed bag ftw
I went to the SM8 last year, after playing Cleveland for years. I think the Cleveland looks better at address, just suits my eye more. I am going back to Cleveland this year
I actually wanted to try something different and purchased 56&60 cast milled Smithwork wedges. Love them thus far.
Those look sexy as hell... bookmarked. I love the copper.
Ping Glide 4 is fantastic. Game improvement with classic shape and spin.
I have been using Taylormade MG1 for a few years now and loved them. Switched to Vokey this year and i will never get a different brand. There is a reason why everyone uses them.
I feel ya. I will never play another wedge once I switched to vokey it was game over lol.
The 56 down to 46 lofts in Vokeys are fine even though they are not forged any longer, they feel ok but the 58 and above have a hollow section in them to reduce weight in their design, and that clicky sound they give off is annoying to my ear. I own a set and you can definitely hear the difference on shots compared to a wedge that doesn't have that hollow section , such as a Cobra or Callaway or Edel. I love the PXG Sugar daddy's those are amazing feeling and looking wedges.
The bounce on the Hi Toe 3 is incredible. I can lay a 56 degree almost flat on the ground without having the entire face come off the ground.
I always go for cobra wedges
Wilson Raw wedges are brilliant. And half the price of a Vokey
Nice trip to woburn then to get fitted đđ
Surprised u didnât try the jaws rawâŠto me they have the better feel vs the vokey. Theyâre super easy to flight down tooâŠlow one hopper stopper machines.
Been playing Cleveland wedges since high school and the original gen 1 RTX wedge. I have RTX-4 in the classic black satin look still currently, and i think the 4âs are even nicer looking and more classic than the new rtx-6. To me the price and feel is so good but i am interested in Volkeyâs if they can flight down easier because i tend to hit my wedges and irons very high even after getting fit, although i heard Volkeys arent nearly as soft feeling as the clevelands
Very nice review. I want to try those PXGs. Maybe it there marketing and price. Thanks Pete
Best wedge comparison video Iâve seen
Great video lads & for a amazing cause
Cleveland wedges are unbeatable but my 58 degree sugar daddy is spectacular. 5 yrs old and the amount of spin is still insane, especially on short shots. U can spin it from anywhere.
Peter would love to see more cobra clubs on the channel. It seems like cobra is just the forgotten child.
I know you canât test every manufacturers wedge out there but there are some less expensive forged wedges that it would have been great to see you try. Ie Wilson Staff, Cobra Snake. The other thing I recently learned about volkey wedges is the pros are forged and what is sold in stores are cast. Where using forged or cast volkey wedges?
My Golfworks personally made wedges work great for me! Maybe because I can use an "R" shaft, alternate grip and they have removable weights.
Had the TM MG3 line and was extremely underwhelmed with them. I dumped them for the Jaws Raw and Full Toe from Callaway. I'm beyond happy with my Callaway wedges. I also had SM9s and didn't like the feel of them.
Personal preference is different for everyone.
Yes!!â€
Just watching now....đ
This conclusion is exactly right. We want to try something new, but the best anyone else can do is a good copy of a Vokey.
Oh good. Just bought a couple of Vokeys the other day đ
Hope no one goes sarcastic on me but Iâve found some surprisingly good results from a.......Northwestern ! If youâre unfamiliar with it, it is a very cheap low end brand (in all of their products). Now I know, itâs not going to outperform any vokey, however if anyone gets a chance to hit one you may be surprised. Cons: putting up with sneers from playing partners, not the feel of the high end ones reviewed here, spin is , shall we say limited. Pros: can hit it as far as these, still decent feel, will plough through the deepest, thickest rough with ease I guarantee, and!.....about $39 ! Donât scoff until youâve tried it.
Vokeys are good yes .. but they are not true forgings, so they will never go in my bag. Great review as well, thanks. I play a mizuno t4 52 raw and a very old but much loved MacGregor tourney 58 wedge.
Im kindof surprised you didn't test the ping or mizuno wedges in this test as well.
My advice is that once you find a set of wedges that can produce shots that you want around the green, then never, ever change. I have a friend who has a 40-year-old wedge and he is a magician with it. He can make the ball talk. It is a rare day when he doesn't get the ball near the hole or in it. So find your wedge, and keep it.
You get so much groove wear though, right?
Love your work Pete. Have you tested an old rusty wedge v an old wedge? They potentially hold more spin for longer?
Iâve only seen brand new wedges with their perfect grooves tested against new raw face wedges with some quick rust on them.
Someone just did a big test on rusted wedges and found they donât spin the ball any more than non-rusted wedges.
@@petegalindez9961 I have seen that Pete. In that test the rusty wedge was tested against a relatively new wedge. Iâd like to know how a rusty wedge would go against a wedge that was 5+ years old with a worn down face.
Surprised you didn't include the Callaway Jaws Raw. Would love to see you try them out.
Great video, Peter, as always! Please feel free to send me the Cleveland wedges! Please? I can't afford good wedges and I need them! Lol.
Wouldnât you say the hyrdozip tech in the Clevelandâs may be better suited for the conditions you play in more though? Or do the Vokeys perform just as well under wet conditions?
Nothing better than new wedge spin.
Not sure if you have already tested) but would be great to see if the Edison wedges could make it into your bag.
i just got some new wedges i got the sm9 in a 56 and then a cleveland 60 degree to get the ball in the air a little easier and i absolutely love both of them
Love it
Not for one minute did I think you would choose anything but vokeys. Have you tried the cobra snakebite wedges? Donât often see you trying out cobra clubs, they tend to be slightly cheaper aswell.
Vokey low bounce is just amazing đ€©
