    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      Not really something that you'd want to try. Earthships are typically one floor buildings. If you tried to do 3 stories, You're berm would have to still make it to the top of your roof. thats like... a 30 foot hill. Best bet is 2 stories. Main floor and a basement but even then its tough.

    Do the tires have to be all the same size when you do this? I seen a donut tire, but from the looks of it, they seem to be all the same size. Did you go with 17s 18s or 20s?

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      typical earthships use anywhere from 185 to 255 for tire sizes. No rims less than R15. Low profile rims are a total pain in the ass to firm up with dirt.

  • @NorthnSouthHomestead
    @NorthnSouthHomestead Před 6 lety +1

    most ppl cant build on of these because of all the pounding. Im wondering why you dont do buckets of dirt and water to fill the tires, so that you can easily pack the tires by hand. would that not work?

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      Thats usually how it goes actually. It just depends on how close the pile of dirt you're pulling from is to the tire. Sometimes its easier to scoop it in shovel by shovel. Most times its a 5gal bucket to get the dirt to the tire.

    Shouldn't there be rebar or something to connect the lower tires to the ones above them? I know the filled tires are heavy, but it still seems like it would be unstable.

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      at the end there is. You usually ram a 5+ foot steak of rebar straight down from the top course of tires. until only 6 inches is left above the top of the tire. one steak per tire, the rest of the tires lower are packed out with cement and adobe until the wall is brought out to be flat. The rebar helps to build the bond beam on the top course of tires to link the whole wall together.

    What about the tires off gassing?

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      What about fresh paint offgassing in your house when ever you paint it? Off-gassing from the tires doesn't happen for two reasons. First, a standard tire will do all of it's off gassing in the first 20,000 mile its on the road. Seeing as how all tires used in earthships are all old used tires, Almost non of them are brand new, so they should be well done their offgassing by the time we use them. and second, When the tire wall is finished inside. it's covered with adobe or cement to pack out between the tires to make it a smooth wall. Once that smooth wall is done, there's no airflow around the tires, They can't offgas if air can not get to them.

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      It depends. But mostly no. and if they do move around, its not that hard to get them back in place. Lots of people like to put a single screw in either side of the tire on the inside through to the tire below it. That helps but isn't necessary.

  • @beyondbeautifulwithmia7589

    Question:?:. Where do you get all those tires from?
    Are they donated?
    Are they free?
    Are they harvested from a junkyard?
    Where do you get the tires from.
    Also if sand is all that's available to you
    Can you build a earth ship home out of that ?

    • @scottdavidson7545
      @scottdavidson7545 Před 3 lety

      Typically from tire shops. They usually have to pay to have tires hauled away. So when you go asking about tires for an earthship. Most tire places want to make sure you're not reselling is all. Other than that, they give tires for free if you pick them up.
      NO do NOT pound tires with sand, Sand does not condense. You want earth or clay, No top soil, no sand, no garden soil. EARTH is your best bet.

    Far too much labor for an old man like me. Considering alternatives to dirt filled tires, I happened to notice at work that we produce bales of empty polyethylene super sacks that measure roughly 3' x 3' x 5 feet. These could be stacked and secured to form a perimeter wall just as these tires do.

    This is definitely "skilled labor" as opposed to "unskilled" and has to take forever. I want to build an earthship but I don't have this kind of time. I can't help but think there might be a better way. Concrete in tire, wet dirt, cut the tire for access and fasten up with horizontal bracing?etc, I would have to hire skilled labor at this pace and would be so expensive on labor and insurance. Hate to be negative, but I'm really interested and I just wonder if anybody has any "better" way to do this?

      I would create exercise machines that lift sledgehammer or some other weight (maybe with spikes?) Attached to a rope that is raised by.... The usual gym weight machine moves, then you could vary the muscles used, arms shoulders chest glutes, legs, or ab machine. Or just stand and pull a rope. Or train dogs to dig up earth, transport it, dig it into tire, pull rope to drop sledgehammer. Or attach tool to the bottom of trampoline. Jump in to pound earth. set lots of tires together on flat ground, pound with pogo stick or trampolines. When finished move onto a cart. Push 12 on a cart or pull 36. = equivalent to a strongman workout pushing a car or pulling a truck. Then strongman can lift onto the wall.
