Keep Muscles Flexed or Loose When Throwing a Punch?

  • A great question that I've been asked is, "Shane, when throwing a punch, should I keep my fist tense and muscles flexed or should I keep everything loose and relaxed?" The answer is a combo of both. Stay loose before and while throwing the punch. You want to squeeze your fist and forearm muscles just before the point of impact.
    GET MORE FIGHT TIPS►full.sc/1bsPRTI
    By doing this you will get optimum speed and pack a strong punch, without injuring your hand. If you stay to tight, you will fatigue yourself quickly and restrict your speed and movements. And if you stay too loose, you risk injuring your hand and won't have any density in your fist, resulting in a weak punch.

    This is something very recommended to practice as the longer you have your fists tight it will decrease your stamina drastically and lose speed in your punches.

    vertical fists reduce the chance to break the hands especially when hitting the head. I have hit walls consistently with vertical fists and have had little damage other than scrapes on my knuckles(not to say you should do this). when using horizontal fists there is more stress on the wrists which could result in sprains, fractures and breaks.

    A better explanation as to why you should not curl your fingers when you punch is that when you curl your fingers into a fist it is more likely that you will be limp wristed when you retract your jab which will cause the hand to vibrate around your wrist which will transmit torsional forces to the wrist and elbow causing damage to the joints. While holding your fingers flat against the palm will station the wrist in a straighter alignment with the bones of the forearm causing the force of rapidly retracting the punch to be transmitted in a more linear way to the bones of the arm causing less stress on the joints.

  • @erinmurphy6993
    @erinmurphy6993 Před 10 lety

    Takes a lot of practice and drills to do this all the time and usually Boxers and Muay Thai fighter wrap their hands and/or use gloves. Constant stiffness or rapid flexing and relaxing of the muscles of the hand will wear one out physically. Being stiff when you punch all the time employs more muscle groups which will tire you out quicker while flexing before the moment of impact will cause your wrist muscles to ache over time particularly if your throwing a lot of short jabbing punches which in turn will effect the speed and repetition at which you can throw lots of punches. It's more in the way you make a fist then how tightly you clench your fists. Karate and modern boxers hold their fists with the fingers curled while Wing Chun, Russian Systema, and old style bare fist boxers tend to hold the fingers flat against their palms. While curled fingers align the knuckles of the index and middle fingers into optimal position to cause damage they result in the instinctual habit to clench your fist tightly. Holding the fingers against the palms aligns the wrist and forearm in a more relaxed position lessens the effects of clenching.

    I had kickboxed for years, and still practice on the heavy bag daily; I never tighten my forearm. I don't even make a fist.
    I don't use hand-wraps when on the heavy bag. When in a fight, I used as little gauze as the referee would allow, (and only to protect my opponent;) the gauze was fall off my hand loose.
    When I wrapped my hands like everyone else did, my arms got tired, just like theirs did. Doing it my way, my arms don't get tired at all. When we would spar in the gym, I would spar with everyone, one after another; they got tired, I didn't.

    As to why different styles use different punching styles it comes down often to how kick and grappling centric the martial art is. Arts without a lot of kicking or grappling that concentrate mostly on punching tend to utilize a looser more energy efficient punch while arts that concentrate on using legs to keep an opponent at a distance or lots of grappling a trapping techniques to off balance or immobilize an opponent tend to use a tighter punching style with an emphasis on accurate power punching rather once you create an opening as opposed to rapid combinations of punches used to overwhelm and opponent. Okinawan Te originally incorporated a great deal of trapping, throws and grappling which was largely lost when it was translated into a Do-styles. Motobu-ryu and American Kenpo is probably the arts that most freely teach and retain Okinawan style trapping and grappling as opposed to Shorinji and Nippon Kenpo and Japanese Karate styles that incorporate aiki-jutsu and Chin'na grappling styles of grappling. Oddly enough both Japanese and Okinawan styles incorporate grappling skills they learned from Chinese kung fu styles but Japanese grappling seems to have a more soft internal style component since they cut themselves off from China before Northern Shao Lin Styles became popular while Okinawa seems to have derived from a combination of soft and hard Shao Lin styles due to their closer political and cultural alignment with China.

      if you do frontkicks or horsekicks your leg is still bend at the impact and straightens out compleelty after it in sort of a pushing motion

    Technically speaking here.. closing your fist reduces air resistance, And the concentrated weight of the fist add to momentum and thus kinetic energy potential.
    So, technically it's more effective to punch with a closed fist, but ONLY providing you hit a soft spot, OR you are highly trained (like me) and you can punch concrete without your bones breaking. (it takes years to condition the bones by the way)
    That said, if you hit at a wrong angle your knuckle could go flying with the birds, so again, if you are not trained, the increased probability of a bad-angle shot, coupled with a hard spot and non-conditioned bones means you may as well stick your hand in a potato slicer

      @gingerbaker1 Před 4 lety

      Technically speaking, the kinetic energy of a punch, F, (force), is 1/2 (M) x (V squared), where M = mass and V is velocity. So, the force of the punch goes up very rapidly with increased speed. The mass of your arm and fist is basically constant. And it is easy to see that you can punch much faster with a relaxed arm than with a flexed one. But the technique takes a LOT of practice. You have train yourself to clench your fist and arm only at the last instant
