One of Gal Costa’s hits was a song called “Meu Nome Ă© Gal” (“My name is Gal”), in which she literally duels with her guitar player to see who can reach the highest note, but in a playful and not snobbish way. It’s pretty awesome. She was definitely one of Brazil’s top singers.

The nasality in Gal's voice is related to the Portuguese language spoken in Brazil. For Brazilians it sounds perfectly natural. This singer's voice is part of the collective imagination of the Brazilian people and its lack causes us immense commotion.

Interesting fact about Gal: when she was a child, she didn't had access to formal musical education, but she already knew she wanted to sing, so she would stuck her head inside big pans from her mother's kitchen to sing in and listen to her own voice, so she could experiment with her voice and breathing. It's not surprising she grew to have such an amazing vocal control.

    Beth, these are the lyrics:
    STRANGE STRENGTH
    I saw a boy running
    I saw the time
Playing around the path of that boy
I put my feet in the creek
And I think I never took them out
The sun still shines on the road and I have never passed it
    I saw the woman preparing
    Another person
Time stopped for me to look at that belly
Life is a friend of art
It's the part that the sun taught me
The sun that crosses this road that I have never passed
That's why a force leads me to sing
    That's why this strange strength
    That's why I sing, I can't stop
    That's why this immense voice
    I saw many gray hairs
On the forehead of the artist
Time doesn't stop and yet he never ages
    He who knows the game
Of the fire of things that are
It's the sun, it's the road, it's the time, it's the foot and it's the ground
    I saw many men fighting
    I heard their screams
I've been at the bottom of every hidden desire
And the surest thing of all things
Is not worth a path under the sun
And the sun on the road is the sun on the road, it's the sun
That's why a force leads me to sing
    That's why this strange strength
    That's why I sing, I can't stop
    That's why this immense voice
That's why a force leads me to sing

surrounding the trail of that boy
I placed my feet in the brook.
And I think I've never taken them out.

Life has a friendship with art.
It's a part I was taught by the sun.
The sun still travels this road that is neverending.
From this comes a force takes me to sing
From this a strange force in the air
From this I sing, I cannot stop
      From this a voice tremendous
I saw many white hairs on an artists brow
Time doesn't stop although he doesn't age
He who know the games, the fire of things that are

There is an old black and white video of a young Gal Costa singing "trem das onze" where she sings and plays the guitar during the dictatorship, and the crowd starts singing in unison, so she starts scatting and harmonizing with them, encouraging them, and they sing louder and louder, and it's one of the most moving things in the whole world, I cry every single time.

Gal Costa got me into bossa, muzak, folk, disco, funk, classic rock, world music and jazz. Im indebted to her music career. I was originally used to more metal, house, filter house, dnb, experimental, breakcore, stuff but my dad would always tell me me about a bunch of jazz and bossa artists (which id always ignore cause me in my angst, I thought my dad was out of touch😅). A few years ago my dad passed away and I decided to listen to his old record collection. Gal Costa’s self titled album was up first and the song “Namorinho de Portao”’s weird opening BLEW ME AWAY. I fell in love with nearly every Gal Costa song and my dad’s other records, and man I wish my dad still was alive because I really want to tell him im sorry for bashing my Dad’s music taste cause his taste was AMAZING. But yeah Gal Costa’s music gave me a chance to enthusiastically connect with my dad musically beyond his death and she was just such a talent. Much love to lady Costa and her family after her passing because she was truly loved by many people outside of Brazil in the world including myself.

His joy upon listening was absolutely infectious. Keep connecting with your father! My guess is that he doesn’t want or need an apology. He would be thrilled that you’re listening to and loving the music that meant so much to him!

It only adds to the miracle of Gal's voice learning she was not formally trained. She learned to sing by herself. One of the most remarkable events of the beginning of her life as a singer is her childhood and early adolescence, when she would place a pot over her head and experiment with resonance and the simple production of voice. From that she went to working in a record store, where she'd listen to bossa nova and anything she could get her hands and ears on. It shaped her voice and would make her one of the greatest representatives of MPB, one of the few to stay in Brazil when her friends and mentors had been exhiled due to political persecution. Gal is a born star who combines voice and soul and sheer determination.

    Strange power
    VersÔes: #1#2
I watched a boy run freely
I saw time, as it played
Around the trail the boy left
I put my feet into the brook
And maybe, have never pulled them away from there
The sun is still shining at that road I've never passed before
I saw a woman produce a new person in hers
Time had just stopped so I could watch that belly
Life is a friend of art
That's what the sun has taught me
The sun, that crosses this road it has never met before
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand
I saw some gray hairs upon the artist's head
Although time doesn't stop, it seems to never age
The only ones who know how the fire of life works
Is the sun, the time, the road, the feet, and the earth
I saw some men quarreling. I could hear them scream
I've been in the essence of each hidden wish
And the truest thing of all is this:
It's pointless to have a way under the sun
Because the sun upon the road is just the sun upon the road, it's just the sun
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand
For that reason, a power makes me sing
For that reason, here's this strange power in the air
For that reason, I sing and I will always do
For that reason, there's in me a voice this grand

Gal is brazilian, and so am i. And nasal sounds are a big part of our language. It's natural for us. Maybe that's why it sounds good to you. She's not forcing it. She was a legend in our country. RIP Gal Costa

I really like the way you explain the nuances and the technique when you reacting to these videos. It helps a lot a non expert like me to understand a little bit about singing. Thanks Beth!
