It's a coming of age in time of dictatorship and terror and yet a time of revolution and an eagerness for life and happiness.
What stunned me the most is how Beth could capture some of that convoluted emotions just by the expression of this unique singer.

And the lyrics was engaged politicaly for a moment in Brazil, were the militar ditactorship used to censor any subversive art. So, all the lyrics were made to cheat these mecanisms of sensorship. The song takes so many different meanings when you consider that it was written during a time when Brazil was a dictatorship. It's just one of those great iconic songs
that's exactly what impressed most in this video. I always knew Elis Regina is great but Beth Roars got it in a couple of seconds without the meaning of the song. I loved to hear technical point of view

The way she perceived Belchior style of “speaking Songs”, the perception of the change in tone by the time Elis sings “há perigos na esquina.. eles venceram e o sinal está fechado pra nós que somos jovens”! Elis was the best singer ever in in Brazil. She was married to two great musicians, that helped forge and grow her huge enormous gigantic natural talent. And she got very close to perfection. When I studied classical music in an important school in Minas Gerais, I had a class about her. And the professor compared her to other great singers, so we can realize how great she was.
It's very sad she died too early due to an overdose and stopped producing her marvelous and unforgettable perfomances!

The creepy scenario is due to it was recorded in the 1970's, when Brazil was under a dictatorship, then it was ordinary - specially in protest songs like this - show heavy, ugly or misshapen scenarios to represent the agony and pain of freedom suppressed with torture and death.
Noup, this song when is translated for "another or any" language can be interpreted in a lot meanings, basically it is about what one thing that to me never change "youths always will criticizing oldest, parents, grown up, and became who they criticize" simple like that, but for Brazilians it is a scream to be heard, which never happened.

This music was a political anthem during the dictatorship between 68-80’s in Brazil, a very sad period in our history, several murders and people was tortured, maily the artists, because they couldn’t express with freedom. This is why Elis was so powerful and seems angry. This music was a scream for opressed people, and has a lot of signification for us.

Excellent translation. Only one minor thing to notice is, as someone said, "canto" (1:22) means a corner, a place, but also singing, and I believe singing is what Belchior (the author) had in mind: Any singing is smaller than anyone's life.
This song is about a generation of young people from 1960's that left behind dreams of freedom and a better life in the future for a pragmatic way of living, just like their parents, because of both: the hardness of life itself and the military dictatorship that lasted from 1964 to 1984. During that time, the lyrics of every song to be recorded should pass under a censorship office to be authorized for public release. So the lyrics is not explicit about the dictatorship. It's subtle. But anyone who knows brazilian history understands it talks about political repression.
Yep, "canto" means "singing" in this context. Brazil was under a dictatorship at the time this song was released. Censorship took over, artists would get downtrodden. The ones who dared to speak anything that was remotely (or if they thought so) "against the government" during the AI-5 would get jailed, tortured, exiled and, some say that there were even casualties.

That music was made during a period of military dictatorship in Brazil, that`s why she speak so bravely with that angry face at the beginning, and then starts to sing after that as a way to make people wake up to fight against the system!! All that in a very popular TV Show at that time, propably watched by more than half the population of Brazil. Besides that, the dictatorship used to censor lyrics against then, and also to arrest and murder the artists if they found out, so you had to be very smart and clever while doing composition of the lyrics, and that`s why it doesnt make much sense when you translate it, you need to feel it and try to catch the meaning from some passages.

I’m Brazilian and this song is very emotional because she is touching a dark period of our history when the military took over Brazil and nobody had freedom of speech. Many were killed and tortured by this regime. ( I was born after it, thank God)The song is not talking about its atrocity, but faintly referencing bits and pieces of this era as it tells a story of lifespan conflict worsened by the regime. I think the creepy dolls are a metaphor for feeling stuck, voiceless and unable to move. You were right, she is telling a story wearing her heart on her sleeve! Thanks for reacting! Hello Beth, I hope you know more about brazilians singers nowadays. But If you don't know yet, Elis Regina was and still a legendary singer same that died soon. She sang this song as a protest. Brasil have part of history about the dictatorship, with a lot of restrictions and sorrow, it's a bad memory because people died or disappeared and their families got this sad feeling of 60's to 80's. In the same time people was living life with a poor condition, a high inflation and no hope of surviving. The original composer is Belchior, I recommend you listen too.
We returned in a sad moment in 2019 and still living it with a pandemic situation, with a lot of people getting poorly again and with a genocide president that negligence our humanity.

Elis Regina is probably our greatest singer in Brazil and certainly one of the most respected by all, her interpretations are unique and very emotional. This song in particular is an anthem against oppression or maybe it's a scolding on the people who got discouraged from fighting against. It talks about the period of military intervention In the 60's that turned into a dictatorship for twenty years. So therefore phrases like "There's danger around the corner, they won and the light is closed for us
that we are young"....in this period some simple democratic rights were taken away from people like "To hug your brother and kiss your girl in the street"...
Then the lyrics evolve into an awareness that every effort to fight against oppression was in vain because those who sold the idea that the people could take power sold themselves, as we can see in the phrase "Today I know that whoever gave me the idea of a new conscience and youth is at home guarded by God counting vile metal...My pain is realizing that even though we've done everything, everything, everything we've done, we're still the same and we live like our parents."

After being criticized for singing at a September 7 festival, it came to light that, a month earlier, she came home to find an army Sargeant by her son's crib holding him. O triste é que ainda hoje ela está certa: "ainda somos os mesmos e vivemos como nossos pais", inclusive cometendo os mesmos erros e permitindo a iminência de uma nova ditadura militar no país.
Se o período militar fosse ditadura ela e outros artistas maconheiros e vagabundos não teriam cantado livremente e alguns até enriquecido com dinheiro público.. A Elis em que pese o seu grande talento se perdeu por drogas e bebidas e uma vida sem regras e princípios. E se hoje fosse uma ditadura você não estaria aqui criticando o governo.

So basically this song brings forth a message. It speaks about the time of the military regime in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. She is basically expressing her emotions. Here is what I got.
It is about learning to look and understand the past or else be doomed to repeat it. We, the young ones, will repeat the same mistakes as our parents. We will live as them and be them if we are blind to what is happening around us. We are not free. We are oppressed and our opportunities are taking from us because the regime won. Hence the line, "We are still the same and live just like our parents"
That is what she is basically expressing. It is very powerful and she shows so much EMOTION. Because she is fed up and frustrated. She is such a Queen.

I do not know which parallel Brazil you're talking about, but we did live in a dictatorship government during this period (60's - 80's). Nowadays you're free to have your own political inclination, however we cannot erase our history.

André Matos não era bem "música brasileira", era um artista internacional. Elis Regina era mesmo MPB, então faz sentido dizer que foi a primeira.

It's a protest song about the dictatorship period in Brazil. So powerful!
It's really important to realize that she is not only singing. She is yelling against the apathy of the youngest people who, in brazilian 70's, saw the power achievement of a far-right dictatorship without moving one finger. "As their parents". And this is the reason that the song name is "Like our parents". Believe or not, now we are in 2021 here in Brazil and we are living THE SAME SCENARIO.
