    Awesome original T-Shirt designs for watch enthusiasts!
    Vario has gone all the way back to the first men's watches, pioneered during WWI, with their 1918 Trench watch series. In this video I review the 1918 Medic, 40mm variant, which is an astonishingly faithful realization of the original trench watch design, but with all the modern innovations you'd expect from a cutting edge micro-brand.

    Im considering a vario trench watch as a Christmas present for my dad. He’s a long time collector and appreciates old things and while this watch isn’t old, it’s a faithful homage to watches if that era and he won’t have to baby it. I think it’ll look good on him when he takes out his almost finished 1934 Ford hot rod

    I know I'm late to the party, but this watch is basically built for me. I'm a huge history nerd, love the vintage styling, and considering I work as a medic, the pulseometer is a neat addition. Definitely a watch I'd love to have in my little collection!

    enjoy the video. I have the watch on right now. My late father was a pharmacist, and he kind of brainwashed both me and my brother to be physicians ( he was a pharmacist). after he passed, I got one of these watches for both me and my brother and engraved my father’s name on the back of the watches. I have never used it to actually take a pulse, but it really is a fun watch to wear if you are in the medical field (I looked at other pulsometers, and they were either extremely expensive or pieces of crap Quartz watches). The more I wear it and scratch it up, the better it looks.

    I don't know if you can say Super-LumiNova is an upgrade from 1918, at least in terms of brightness. In World War I they pioneered the use of radium lume, which apparently glowed constantly and very brightly.
    Well, for about three or four years, until the highly radioactive radium burned out the phosphorescent material it was mixed with. Then it stopped glowing, but stayed highly radioactive. And is still dangerously so a hundred years afterward.

    I got the Vario 1918 Trench 40mm on a white enamel dial. It is gorgeous. It is about 10.5 mm thick with all and its domed crystal! I think I am now thinking on purchasing the Medic in brass 40mm diameter. I thank Shane for pointing out your channel, he has a brass 40mm, Medic white enamel. The Vario is made by owner, Ivan, from Singapore ... great vintage-inspired watches, amazing micro-brand!

      @duncanb1981 Před 2 lety

      I travelled around Belgium and did a battlefield tour.. kind of a pilgrimage I guess, being a former serviceman and having great uncles who fought and never returned. Pretty harrowing experience.. and to see the areas now farm land that so much blood was spilt over. With gently rolling country side and largely flat areas the smallest hill was a dominant position. Besides the odd crater that has morphed into a natural geographical feature unless you knew or came across a cement pill box/ machine gun post it would be easy to dismiss the history of those areas.
      Lest we forget.

    I have an original WW1 trench watch that is basically a traditional pocket watch movement that has been put into a brass case with lugs for the strap. It was given to me by my grandfather who acquired it while serving in the trenches. I suspect the brass case started life as a shell case and you can imagine some officer getting his pocket watch modified in France to make it more usable in the field. It measures 52mm without the crown and is massive so I don't wear it even through it still keeps excellent time. Great video, very interesting.

    I bought the cream dial, orange indices trench watch Dave. It really is a beautiful tribute watch. I also have half a dozen genuine WW1 trench watches which all still run & get a special wear from time to time. The ONLY fault for me with this tribute is the position of the crown. The 3 position would’ve been better. Nonetheless Ivan has done a brilliant job! 👏🏼

    • @RoaroftheTiger
      @RoaroftheTiger Před 2 lety

      - Andrew, as you can probably guess from my Username; I'm a real pain when it comes to authenticity of all things Military. But unlike Your Prize Collection of WW I Trench Watches; these Watches are made to be worn, on a regular basis. Yes, the "3" is more Authentic. But If placing the Crown at the "4", will prevent a catastrophic accident. (Crown Guards would have made me "flip -out" !) I say "Good On Ivan" at VARIO - Well Done. BTW - Since it still was a period of transition & experimentation; Didn't "some of these", still have the Crown at the "12" ? ... just sayin'.

    • @andrewd7586
      @andrewd7586 Před 2 lety +1

      @@RoaroftheTiger Yeah you’re right re crown placement at the 12 being a pocket watch. One of my genuine trench watches was converted from pocket watch to wrist watch. The strap is actually long enough to go around the thigh. I’m actually thinking it may have been used as a PILOT watch either in WW1 or later in WW2? Either way it’s pretty cool!👍🏻😎

    A 30 pulsation track is not very useful; better to have a 15 or 10 pulsation track. Also, it would be more useful if there was a chrono function to reset the seconds hand at 12 to immediately start checking a pulse, otherwise, you have to wait for the hand to go to 12 first. But I do like the enamel dial and handset and even the wire lugs. Thanks for the video!

    Dave- there is a 40 mm version of the "standard" VARIO Trench Watch, but with a Brass Case. It uses a 8Ns Miyota Movement (a decorated "8000" series, but with Hacking) You won't see that Movement, as It as an Engraved Screw Down Steel Caseback.
    P.S. - I own Both the afore mentioned 40 mm & the 37 mm Steel Case. As I have a 7.25 inch wrist. It looks better on me with the Bund Strap. But the STRAP itself is a Bit TOO SHORT & TIGHT. (the Last Hole !) Since the Brass Model Trench is 40 mm, It's less of a Problem.

    I really like the watch, but the wire lugs would make it really hard to find similar appropriate leather straps. I have a largish wrist, so finding XL leather straps like that would be extremely hard, if not impossible, other than going the custom route. I don't think it looks quite "right" on a NATO, or similar strap, but that's me.
