This is my first time hearing this song, and watching this video! What else can I say than WOW! This gave me instant goosebumps, and this is such a sad yet powerful march song! Originally written by Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead.
The lyrics really fit perfectly into the events you can read below. WELL DONE SABATON!

A lot of people looks down on Motörhead and Lemmy's vocals. But you can't argue with Lemmy's writing this is beautiful and emotional.
I have never looked down on Lemmy and I can't really see how anyone could.
I admit that I sometimes had hard time listening to Lemmy, but I did some homework (like I did with all bands) before seeing them live at Sweden Rock Festival. Lemmy was a heck of a songwriter! 🤘 May him R.I.P.

Such an emotional cover of this song. My Grandad and Great-Grandad fought in the wars and it brings home just what they went through during these awful conflicts. Goosebumps and tears in my eyes listening to and watching this. Tommy's solo was so heartfelt as well. I'm seeing Sabaton tomorrow night in London 😀....can't wait. Also what an amazing tribute to Lemmy and Motorhead.

@GivenToe Yes they both survived the war thankfully. I was quite young when my Grandad passed away and he was in his 80's then. As far as I can tell he never talked much about the what he went through during the war but that is the same with a lot of servicemen I think.

By coincidence I heard the Motörhead original at a German Rock radio called Radio BOB a few weeks before. I thought "never knew this ballad from Motörhead" and today I stumbled about this amazing Sabaton cover.

In fact, this is not Sabaton's first ballad. I don't remember if there was another among them but definitely "The Ballad of Bull" from the album "Heroes" is one of them.
"En livstid I krig" is IMO also a ballad.

I've studied a lot about WWII, even diving into the pre-war geopolitics of the 3rd Reich vs. those of the USSR preceeding the war. I've just recently started studying WWI, and while reading up on the Somme offensive, I came across Sabaton's cover of Motorhead's "1916." I was familiar with the original, but Sabaton's remake, combined with the brilliantly done video, brought tears to my eyes.

I've said in the past as Brits we may not show our patriotism the way Americans do but we take our remembrance Day very seriously WW1 in particular holds a very special place in our hearts particularly The Battle of The Somme so much life lost just for a handfull of miles.

In my school in Britain
we had / have a war memorial
for the fallen in the first world war.
I lived in Northern England
and every town and village has
a war memorial to those who did not return.
Have you ever visited Northern France and Belgium
because there are hectares and hectares of graves
from the first world war.
It was one of the saddest holidays of my childhood when
we did the trenches
though we did also go to Bruges (svenska: Brygge) and Ghent (svenska: Gent) in Belgium
to see the art and medieval architecture
Though now I know a lot of the architecture was recreated
in the 1920s after WW1.
I would recommend listening to the Lemmy version
it is just Lemmy and mostly keyboards and is also deeply moving
He wrote it after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme
and it is so moving.
I have not been there, but I want to 🙏🏻 I will listen to Lemmys version too 😊

For those who like the theme of this song I can truly recommend The Pogues - The band played waltzing matilda which is a song about the Gallipoli campaign,
in WWI, that caused almost 600 000 causalities and 100 000 during the year the campaign was ongoing.

For me this is the best cover Sabaton has ever made. All Guns Blazing was my favourite so far, but this one is even better, and a wonderful tribute to Motörhead

I like yourself Mr GivenToe at 5:43 had to stop the video, remove my headphones and walk away just to comprehend the lyrics, when I was 16 I had a fascination with cars and tech and the only time you'd add two years to your age was to get into a pub, not a battlefield.
How many of us can comprehend that these kids wanted to go to war and at just 16 years of age say "yes this is what I want to do"
Yeah thats what good quality songs do for us =) Yeah it's insane. They didn't know what they were getting themselves into. On the other hand, if they would not have done it, who knows how the war would have turned out right?

När det kommer till låttexten, vill jag säga att Lemmy (R.I.P) var grym på just det. Riktigt häftigt att se Sabatons alla (eller nästan alla) "karaktärer" från tidigare låtar. 😊 De lyckades få med väldigt mycket, tribut till deltagare/stupade i Första Världskriget, Motörhead/Lemmy samt alla soldater som var och är involverade i krig, oavsett sida. Som du sa, något av det bästa från Sabaton. Vid sista versen kommer tårarna har jag märkt efter att ha sett videon några gånger nu... 😢

This is phenomenal but the original is a different effect. Lemmy's voice is just more down to earth and from the streets, so it hits different. Great reaction!

Sabaton brings the brutal history to us again. This is unimaginable to us, the suffering and the loss of life. Wars are so brutal. The song is disturbing, because of what is describes, but it also makes it a very good song with a deep meaning. It is so sad....

'Sixteen years old when I went to the war' - at the age of sixteen you are not considered mature enough to vote, get married or drink. Only mature enough to be gunfodder.😢
- And 19 was the average age of a soldier in the Vietnam war.
18 was the minimum age to serve, but they lied and added 2 years, Some ageing 2 years overnight.
It's insane.
A friend of mine was telling me about his grandfather and how an army recruiter convinced him to lie about his age and join the army at the age of 16. Shortly afterward, the US entered the Korean War. Had some crazy stories like having to take meth just so he could have the energy to make the retreat back south after the US got caught off guard by the Chinese. Had even crazier pictures posing proudly next to a bunch of decapitated North Korean soldiers heads he tied to the hood of a jeep.
That sounds insane, but it is the terrifying reality of it I suppose.

I suspect I saw a veteran in that video, he moved, ehm, lets call it "just right" body in balabne ready to take cover or move while advancing in balance across terain, gun raised both eyes open... I instantly recognised training and likely experience. wondering if anyone else has seen him.
It wouldn't surprise me if they had actual veterans in the video. When Sabaton produces videos, they do it good.

@@GivenToe Hence miltary history and not war. Military history is history of war and conflict. They have songs about non combatants like The Ballad of Bull.

I'm not faulting or blaming anyone here, but I noticed an error in the lyrics lol
He says at the start, in the 1st Person POV, that he's 16. He later says he added 2 years to his age, to make himself 18.
But, in the British Army, you had to be 19 to serve in combat roles, at the time, so they'd need to have added 3 years to their ages, not 2.
Just a small little thing I noticed, but doesn't take away from the song or writing in any form so who cares really.
Oops, well well, it can't all be perfect I suppose =)

This song got to me pretty bad. The original version by Motorhead is amazing and I love that fragile broken voice you hear in it. But somehow this song is made for Joakim. The whole song sounds like an accusation and a memorial at the same time. Millions of soldiers have to die because of a few power-hungry dickheads who need their on ego satisfied. And for what? I will never understand this lust for power. We need Sabaton to shout it out to the world so maybe one day human kind will learn that this planet can exist without us if we do not stop killing ourselves for no other reason than money and power😢
